• Biography

  I wasn't one of them and we all knew it. But that didn't make me dangerous. That didn't give them the right to hate me. That didn't give them the right to hurt me like they did.
  I didn't think the whole village would be so cruel. I thought, surely, one kind person must be out there. One kind person would tell them to stop. But no one did. No one ever did.
  Did they think I couldn't feel pain? Did they think I couldn't feel fear? Did they think I was less than human just because of what I was capable of?
  I can remember the sound of my heartbeat in my ears as they pinned me, facedown, to that table, and strapped down my arms and legs. I remember the sharp teeth of the hacksaw, grating through flesh, then muscle, then bone until the wings simply snapped off. I don't know what was in that needle they gave me, but it kept me awake through every last part. Even when they started on the next wing. And the tail. And the horns. Until they finally let me go, a bloody, screaming, sobbing heap, to go die in the forest.
  But I did not die in the forest. I chose to live in the forest. And the forest chose to live in me.
