  • Kathy and Rob

    Kathy and Rob met when they were 19 and 20 at a mutual friends house party and very quickly the pair hit it off and shortly after started dating. They married in 1983 and had their first child Tom in 1985 then followed by Izzy three years later. They seemed to live a good and happy life together with stable jobs, a home and two children, but sadly Rob started to suffer more and more with bouts of depression. Rob shrugged it off as best he could, kept it to himself most of the time as he felt embarrassed with the way he was feeling. He felt helpless to it, nothing he could pin point to what would trigger it, but the lows would hit him so hard, he felt worthless, hopeless, stuck, ugly, you name it and the drive home from work was usually a perfect time to let it out. What made him feel worse was the fact he felt he didn't have the right to feel sad like this when he had a wife and kids that he adored, but he didn't feel he deserved them back. Any arguments he did have with Kathy he would dwell on and just made him feel worse. Kathy knew he wasn't himself and tried to support him and get to the bottom of it, but Rob simply shrugged it off as stress at work.

    It was in 1991 when Rob finally decided to take his own life. He was found by his 6 year old in the garage where he had hung himself. Kathy felt she could only blame herself for not trying harder to help and get him to open up. She remained strong as best she could for the kids and as they grew older, they all supported each other and Kathy would make sure her kids knew they could talk to her about anything. Kathy was lucky to not have trouble with her two kids. They were tight as a small family and her eldest Tom took on the role of looking after them all as well.
    In 2003 Kathy's daughter was killed in an attack which led to opening up old wounds which were hard to fully repair again this time around despite her son's support as well. She doted on Tom and after loosing a husband and a daughter, she was beside herself at Tom's close brush with death as he was badly injured at work which caused him the loss of his leg. Kathy felt as if she had a curse placed upon her, but Tom stuck close to his mother, both supporting each other until Kathy sadly lost the battle with cancer in 2011.
