Kurapika is a highly intelligent individual that has a darker outlook on life from within the world around him. After he left his village deep within the lush forests he grew up in due to his constant wanderlust; he ventured into the outside world where people fear things that they do not understand. During his travels, he encountered many threats and evil forces that altered his goals into becoming a hunter, highly regarded individuals that have to pass rigorous and dangerous testing and are given amnesty. Above all else, they are considered highly retributive and vaulted people. After completing the two hundred and eighty-seventh hunter exam, Kurapika obtained his license and began his journey as a Black List hunter, those that seek out criminals and fugitives. Using that as a guise, he set out to uncover and snuff out those of whom had decimated his clan. During his journeys, he learned about and perfected his skills in the way of Nen, a force of power derived from using a person's aura. After intense training and much deliberation, Kurapika realized just how dark and unforgiving the world was, and even joined the Mafia as a means to ascertain his goals. He is detached and stoic, easily forgetting his moral compass and falling into the traps of ruthlessness and enmity, learning to harbor no mercy. His heart has darkness in it from his past and current life, knowing nothing but sadness and misery.

Despite that he encountered and managed to befriend a few enlightening individuals during his time at the hunter exam, he strongly considers friendships to be weaknesses and a setback, generally attempting to distance himself from any one of whom could get hurt or hinder his goals. More often than not, pushing anyone away as a means of self-preservation knowing his own life is spiraling out of control. Especially while living life as a hunter. Which isn't exactly pretty, depending on the type of profession within the association one takes. He considers his line of work too dangerous, living perpetually on edge between the intricate dance of life and death, to which he chooses not to subject anyone else to. Along with the fact that he had been subjected to so much in his past, he is socially inept and has no idea how to integrate without letting his negative emotions influence his friendships. Considering this, he generally tends to roam alone, preferring the company of solitude, meditation, and books to that of people and tends only to socialize when he absolutely has to.

>The Past: Before the Massacre

Kurapika hails from the Kurta clan, an isolated and reclusive people who have recessed into the forests of the Lusko Province due to their coveted scarlet eyes, a rare genetic disorder that causes their eyes to glow a bright and vivid red when expressing intense emotion. Due to this, the elder of the Kurtas emancipated them from the rest of the world, as their condition caused fear and aversion, often becoming attacked and persecuted if any clan member's actual eye color was revealed while outside the village. To eliminate this threat, they concealed themselves far from society, only venturing into other neighboring towns for food and supplies while under strict rules to maintain composure and not evoke cause for detection.

Life in the forests was peaceful and tranquil, Kurapika not having known how hideous the world truly was. He mostly kept himself occupied with his best friend Pario, and the pair found themselves getting into trouble more often than not due to Kurapika's exploring nature. One incident nearly cost the blond his life as he had found himself almost going over the side of a precipice and only survived due to Pario's intervention. However, as an outcome of the mishap, Pario ended up wounded, which cost him damage to both his eyes and legs, which was later revealed to be a progressive and debilitating condition. Stricken with guilt and resentment, he vowed to leave the village and search for the best doctor there was to cure his best friend. But due to the immense restrictions for visiting the outside, Kurapika was denied his request.

It wasn't until much later when he and Pario encountered a female hunter by the name of Sheila who was aspiring to become a pro hunter. Upon finding her wounded in the forests close to their village and saving her, she offered them a book based on professional hunters, to which Kurapika and Pairo graciously took and concealed for reading. It wasn't until Sheila had healed and departed the Lusko region did Kurapika realize the elder of their village had found and seized the book, later confronting the blond about it. After a heated argument, the elder accepted his request to venture from the Kurta village upon passing a set of rigorous tests with the final being sent out to go shopping in a nearby town with a partner without expressing any intense emotion and revealing his scarlet eyes. To which he chose Pario to go with him. He was given a special eye drop that would cause the effects of the scarlet eyes to remain long past the time emotion faded to prove if he had lost composure while gone.

During the excursion, Pario was attacked by a gang of thugs, which caused Kurapika to break down in anger, and consequently, exposing his eyes for their true color which in turn, incited sudden hysteria. Reacting quickly, they fled the town before any riots could be formed, returning to their village once more. Luckily, Pairo had managed to switch the special drops with water before leaving, which prevented Kurapika's scarlet eyes from remaining visible, causing him to pass the final test phase.

Before leaving on his journey, he was granted unrestricted access to the outside world, and a silver chain with a vibrant ruby was bolted into his left earlobe, a final treasure he would have of his home. Six weeks after departing, he had learned his village was attacked by a rogue group of bandits known as the Phantom Troupe for their eyes, which was considered one of the Seven Treasures of the World and all one hundred and twenty-eight members of his clan were slaughtered and their eyes removed. He is the sole survivor.

The Present: After Yorknew

Currently, Kurapika is searching the four corners of the world in hopes of recovering the stolen eyes of his deceased clan members. So far, he has turned up a few leads and has only recovered one pair since the travesty at Yorknew. Since then he has embarked on his own, leaving Gon, Killua, and Leorio to their pursuits, having only minimal contact with them since he was hired as a bodyguard for the Nostrade family who is part of the underground Mafia. Using the Mafia's black market contacts, he hoped to find leads on the remaining missing eyes, willing to delve into the pits of darkness, scandal, debauchery, and other criminal acts harboring a no hold barred demeanor. Though he has some lingering adversity towards those he had blamed for so long for all his pain and sorrow, he has found himself lately at the den of the Spider, tossing all conviction aside in favor of exploration. Becoming enthralled with the Spider's leader, it's become a rapturous power struggle, caught between manipulative tendencies and desire to be subservient. With a twisted need to control and be controlled, he is battling with his own heart, finding himself caught within the abyss and its malignant pull, further descending into madness. The intoxicating pull of the Spider's bite is slowly causing him to lose himself. However, the more time he spends around their leader, the deeper he is becoming entrenched, finding sanctity in those he had once despised all those years and acquiring an infinity for. And perhaps, his heart is being captured by that very same leader. Or, it already has.

Little by little, the young blond has realized the connection between them has begun to deepen - spending so many waking days around someone will do this, and Kurapika is so enveloped by Chrollo's whims and charms that any hopes of turning back have been quickly abolished. Not that he wants to. The question of there possibly being love between them only arises the notion of just how intertwined they are. Is it fate? Quite possibly. For some time Kurapika explored the developing feelings he was having for Chrollo to determine if what he was experiencing was a genuine love for his once mortal enemy.

After infiltrating a notable mafia family to acquire a pair of Scarlet Eyes, they encountered a formidable Nen user who after a harrowing fight, stabbed Chrollo, almost killing him which left Kurapika torn on his feelings regarding the Genei Ryodan leader. As he began to realize just how interconnected they were, the more apparent it was on how he felt for Chrollo. For so long, Kurapika fought with his emotions, struggling to understand what Chrollo meant to him and if what he felt towards the older man was indeed love. Only after having meaningful revelation did Kurapika conclude what he suspected long ago and that his heart openly ached for Chrollo.

Kurapika has continued to remain within the company of the one who has completely changed his life as they keep their search for the remaining pairs of Scarlet Eyes, their connection only strengthening and growing. Even now, Kurapika realizes he wishes not to be without the older man in his life and has unsealed Chrollo's Nen and also committed to joining his spiders. It was a decision not once had the Kurta ever thought he would have found himself committing to, but now, he wants nothing more than to make the ties between them permanent and is going as far as to reveal decisions to those closest to him. They have since returned to Yorknew City after a horrific and near-lethal encounter with a horde of bloodthirsty beasts who are hellbent on throwing their world into ruination.

At the current, Kurapika has begun his journey into becoming a Spider while facing the trials of telling his friends about his romantic relationship with Chrollo as he tries to bridge the gap between the two groups in hopes of them facing a common enemy together. It is through this mission he hopes to unite them and continue his future with the man he fell so deeply in love with.




>Nen and its Manifestation

Nen is the control and usage of one's life force - or aura, to do various tasks. To be able to use Nen, one must have awoken their aura nodes, which comes from months of training, or by force. Which the latter is dangerous. Learning to use Nen is the final step professional hunters have to acquire to be considered official.

There are four basic principles of Nen. Which must be learned and mastered to even be considered a full use of it.

>Ten - Focusing of the mind and reflecting on one's self and goal
>Zetsu - To put it into words
>Ren - Intensify your will
>Hatsu - To put it into action

Once these are mastered, developed, and processed through both a mental and emotional state, most Nen users have already learned the basics of controlling it and can redefine the power based on desire, goal, and ability to deploy it properly. One way to do this is to be able to use the ability of Ten to defend one's self from another user's emotional Nen attack. While Zetsu allows the user to control the flow of their aura, preventing it from leaking or flooding. Such as closing one's nodes to stop the flow completely and hide one's presence. Though if not done properly, the user can be left vulnerable to severe and hostile emotional attacks. Ren is the ability to expand and intensify one's aura, allowing for a greater, more powerful output. However, this can come at the cost of expending the aura at a faster rate. Learning to control such a heavy flow for longer than ten minutes can take months. Some master it in weeks. Ren can also manifest in emotion, which can be used as raw strength and even manipulate other Nen users. Doing this can generally even leave behind minute trances long after the user has gone. Hatsu is the release or transmission of one's aura through personal expression. In essence, this becomes a Nen ability that is unique to every individual.

>Nen: Advanced Techniques

Upon being able to control the four basic principles, one can delve into the practices of advanced techniques. These are often used in conjunction with the basics and expand the user's options in combat. Though at a greater risk of aura depletion.

>Gyo - This is the advanced application of Ren. It focuses aura into one specific part of the body and enhances it, though consequently, it leaves the rest of the body vulnerable. Generally, this is applied to the eyes to see hidden abilities often rendered invisible by In. However, there is a lower cost gauge where the user pulls on the leaking aura as opposed to the pull by Ren and still increases power to the specific body part. Though it is perceived that this is an intermediate step into using the more Ren-based Gyo and it is unknown if the lower cost gauge can combat In.
>In - An advanced form of Zetsu which grants the user the ability to conceal one's Nen, thus making the user imperceptible. Technically this is typically used to generate sneak attacks or to hide one's presence. Rendering In doesn't cut the user off from the flow of aura, but masks it. Though this can be countered with Gyo.
>En - This is the combination of both Ten and Ren, using both to expand the field of aura to a greater radius then with just the usage of Ten. Generally, Nen users are challenged to expand their aura past two meters, though masters have been known to expand it as far as fifty meters. Doing this allows for Nen users to become aware of any presence that enters into the aura field with a variation of awareness and finesse depending on skill level. The drawback to deploying this technique is it's incredibly draining and can cause the user to have fatigue.
>[size]Shu - Another advanced technique of Ten. This ability allows the Nen user to extend their Ten into any object and thus, in essence, harboring that object as an extension of the body and adding strength and protection to it. This ability can also be used with other techniques such as Ko.
>Ko - An advanced form of Gyo, Ko also incorporates Ten, Ren, Zetsu and Hatsu. Gyo focuses on and utilizes aura on a particular body part, while Ren is then used to enhance the amount of aura generated with Zetsu completely ceasing the flow of aura to any other part of the body. This move causes the chosen body part to become particularly powerful, but at the cost of leaving the rest of the body unprotected. However, it is commonly used as an offensive tactic. Though an incomplete form can be done without immediately using Ren to master the other steps before attempting to increase the amount of flow and contain it. Ko has been known to be akin to a tuning fork creating high-pitched dissonance.
>Ken - Advanced technique of the basic forms of Ten and Ren. Using this allows the user to amplify the state of Ren for a prolonged period that generally goes beyond its basics in learning. Ken then allows the user to defend against attacks from any direction and is considered the best option as a defense against Ko. However, this technique is incredibly tiring and taxing on the body, and not seen as powerful as Ko since it distributes the flow of aura evenly around the body. If not in immediate danger, Ken is used as a precautionary method to become aware of potential attacks. Some Nen users have been known to expand the radius of this technique to make them able to see incoming attacks that may otherwise, be hidden, which is a sort of En.
>Ryu - Is the combination of Gyo and Ken to perform real-time offensive and defensive value adjustments at the same time. It requires the user to be able to gauge the aura distribution and percentage value into two separate body parts, generating a greater ability to attack and block. It is used to combat Ken users, but with a lower value power rate, and can be very difficult to master, and requires great precision. Though it can also be used to gauge the aura being utilized by the opponent. The drawback is the user's movements can also potentially be predicted.

>Nen: User Types

Each person is born into a particular Nen class which is based on aura type. As such, it is innate and cannot be changed. However, it is possible for one to learn in part, a lower percentage of another class that is closest to their original type. Users can achieve mastery in the category they were born with, and then acquire a numerical effect in all other classes except for specialists. The further the type is from the user's naturally born one, the lower the percentage is the user can gain from it though it is impossible to achieve one hundred percent mastery in all the other categories at once.

Determining what class a Nen user is in is done through Water Divination.

>Enhancers - Determined and simplistic, swaying from deceit or facade and are straight-forward, users in this class are usually emotionally driven. Often selfish and highly focused on their own goals they tend to put themselves before others. Generally, users in this class type rely on simple Hatsu techniques.
>Transmuters - Whimsical and deceitful, users in this category are prone to commit and use veils to hide their true personalities. Most never reveal their true intentions regardless of a facade or not, which is often reflected in their unique and unpredictable properties and techniques.
>Emitters - Impatient and quick to anger, many users in this class are known to or have tendencies to react in belligerent, hostile mannerisms and tends to resemble the impulsive traits of Enhancers, it is often speculated that users in this class have the ability to calm down faster, and forget quickly. Due to the nature of this class, users within it have a tendency to use Hatsu that generate long-range attacks.
>Conjurers - Typically high strung and over-emotional, users in this class are generally very cautious and observant, using logical approaches to situations. They rarely succumb to tricks or hidden traps, able to carefully analyze situations before acting. Most items generated by users in this class are deliberate, practical, and logical.
>Manipulators - Users in this class are known to be logical and protective and strive for arguments or discourse. Though when in the pursuit of personal goals, this usually becomes the forefront of the user's focus. They often prefer or highly desire techniques that allow them to control their opponents, usually via something inanimate. It is also usually preferred the object to be highly flexible and versatile.
>Specialists - Individualist and charismatic, users in this class are often very personal and rarely divulge anything about themselves. Though because of the allure and charisma they hold, they are often encompassed by large groups of people. But because this type of class is unique, it has multitudes of facets, and usually, users are only allowed to possess one Hatsu technique.

>Nen: Kurapika

Kurapika is a Conjurer who has been able to fall into the Specialist category. Though this only takes precedence when he gives in to his Scarlet Eyes. He is more proficient in Specialism, but even then, it tends to only manifest in certain circumstances due to the vows and limitations he placed on himself.

>Kurapika's Nen Chains

>Dowsing Chain - A small ball at the end of a chain which is attached to his right ring finger. It is used to detect if someone is lying or find something that is missing. This chain is the one he uses most commonly. Generally, he uses it when attempting to expose those who are being deceptive or feigning innocence. For this to be most effective, it is preferable he is standing before the individual he is checking. When used in conjunction with his ability, Emporer Time, it is plausible for him to use this technique on video recordings. Pertaining he has met the individual before.
>Chain Jail - A hook that dangles at the end of a chain attached to his right middle finger and is specifically used to capture and restrict Spiders, also known as the Phantom Troupe. Although, it is the very same chain he placed restrictions on. If he were to violate the vow, he would die. Upon using it on a Spider, it forces them into Zetsu and subsequently shuts off their aura. It's impossible to break free unless through sheer brute force. Currently inactive due to his recent romantic involvement with the Spider's leader, Chrollo.
>Holy Chain - A cross on the end of a chain attached to his right thumb. This chain is used when in need of healing. It draws from Enhancement abilities when in his Specialist state. He can heal any serious or mortal wound within seconds. It cannot, however, revive the dead.
>Judgement Chain - A small dagger at the end of a chain connected to his right pinkie finger. Called the Stake of Retribution, he places two sets of conditions while the chain wraps around the victim's heart. Should either of those conditions be violated, the chain will then crush the heart. It is the same thing Kurapika placed around his own heart when he made his vows and limitations on Chain Jail. It can also only be used when his eyes turn scarlet.
>Steal Chain - A syringe at the end of a chain which is connected to his right index finger. This chain is used to steal another Nen user's ability by first identifying what the ability is, then revealing its properties. If he drains the target for too long, he can then force them into a state of Zetsu, sealing off their aura. This process is also unfortunately painful. The death of the target does not cause him to lose his stolen abilities.
>Emperor Time - Used only during the time he has gone into Specialist mode, this allows him to use every other class of Nen to one hundred percent efficiency. However, the drawback to this comes at a high price. For every second he spends using this ability, it shortens his life by one hour.
>Stealth Dolphin - Used in conjunction with Emperor Time, he is able to summon a steel-like construct in the shape of a dolphin, each fin adorned with a syringe. Once he has stolen an ability from another Nen user, he is then able to equip it to the construct after learning the named ability, conditions, and use. He can either then choose to use the ability for himself or grant it to someone else. Even someone who is not connected to their Nen. If he so chooses to grant another the use of the stolen ability, it transfers, and that individual can use it. Should he grant it to a disconnected person, he produces a listening device into the target's ear, and they can communicate with each other via the dolphin. It can even teach the recipient how to use the ability. Each stolen ability can only be used once and then it is returned to its original owner. Should the ability not be used, Emperor Time will not deactivate. Or if he faints before the ability is used, the recipient of the stolen ability will also faint.
