Life before the war

Revenge's family name, Emerson, is infamous among both humans and vampires as being one of the most powerful family of vampire hunters to have ever existed. The oldblood vampires existed long before the newbloods, a new species evolved from the result of the apocalyptic wars--the oldbloods were the original vampires, creatures that existed alongside humans in relative secrecy for centuries before the official melding of human and supernatural societies. The Emerson lineage hunted oldblood vampires and have existed well before the introduction of the newbloods.
The Emerson line holds a dark secret, however; they are actually oldblood vampires themselves, or...were, at one point. They broke off from vampire society because of conflict of interest and conflict of morality from certain branches of vampire society--they fought to uphold secrecy and a certain level of humane treatment of their prey. Any vampire that stepped out of those lines was sentanced to death and the Emersons were the executioners. Rumor has it that they were originally highly trained in the war and were vampires specialized for the purpose of killing other vampires.
They were eventually outcasted from vampire society after being considered traitors to their own kind, but they continued to uphold the laws of order. They established human vampire hunters to help them with the staggering number of rebellious vampires that didn't agree with their laws and it continued this way for centuries. With the introduction of the End Wars and the apocalypse as well as the introduction of the newbloods the target on their back from both humans (for being vampires) and from vampires (for being vampire hunters) became too much a danger to ignore any longer.
The current generation used all of their power to wipe the memories of any human that knew their lineage secret to make them remember them only as an exceptionally good vampire hunter line. They put their vampire traits and powers into a dormancy that continued throughout the following generations until they, too, eventually forgot their heritage. The vampires, however, never forgot the true line of the Emersons and eventually moved to wipe it out forever. A group of oldbloods, now few in number, attacked the Emersons and killed both Rev's father and his mother, but he miraculously escaped and survived the slaughter. He vowed revenge and hunted them down one by one, though in the process ended up becoming fond of a female newblood that wanted to help him.
She betrayed him, biting him and filling the wound with her blood in an attempt to either change him into a vampire himself or kill him in the process. She thought the irony was beautiful, but didn't know of the history of the Emersons and what the result would eventually become. Rev fought the "infection" for years, refusing to become the monster he hated, but eventually succumbed to it and became a vampire. He believes it was because of the bite, but in reality it was because he was a vampire all along, an oldblood, but one with their powers hidden away and kept dormant.
