Ok so what faction or what ever is every one going to be? I am ork so what will you two be? Once we get this down a story will appear in some shape or form.
Undoubtedly I can be the Space Marines, or at least my version of them. 
This is interesting.. I'd be up for this and had the idea before also... I'm thinking Imperial Guard. So maybe we can play the role of commanders, each with our own units.. Maybe we can have an alliance set up against the dark eldar. Or no.... THE TAU! Let's get the TAU!
If we wanted to really get deep, we could make an army with points like the game. I'm rusty at that myself and don't have a codex so we don't NEED to make it as in depth. But either way it could be fun.
We could be set on a distant planet somewhere.. Maybe the Imperial Guard is dug in somewhere, assisting an Orc Unit and the Space Marine Chapter drops in. I'm just throwing out ideas. One of them is bound to be good. lol

Tau? They suck at close combat. 
They have good long range stuff... That's why they would make for a fun enemy. Imagine the tactics... Long range artillery support and tanks from the Imperial Guard. Heavy medium range firepower and superior logistics from the Space Marines, and crushing close quarters battles from the Orcs.. I just want to beat up on the Tau.. They're shiny... lol

So what have we decided on? We have a chaos, ork, space marine and imperial guard faction. Also how cannon will we make this? I mean chaos would be willing to work with orks even just temporarily but space marines and imperial guard wouldn't. But what ever the majority likes it and I will go along. But if we will have a tau NPC (I mean the army NPC's) what if we have the guard fighting them then the marines drop in like you said. We could have the orks nearby also engaging the tau but then they see the emperors men and attack them too. Then chaos could well.... make chaos and be their for a relic the tau have maybe? I may be a bit late to say this but what ever. xD

well on one hand they could all fight one another
but one the other hand if we want Ork, space marine and tau OC"s to work tougher at any point I have a plan were there ships are locked in battle in the begging then things start going bad for the tau and they decide on a tactical retreat in to the warp in hopes of escaping else were the humans go after them! They will Not let the tau get away win they are so week and the Ork's go after the human! because "AAAAEERRR KILL THE LITTLE HUMANS!! AAAA" all of them fly in to the warp and open Fire on one other melting down all of there warp shields there for exposing there ships to the madness of the warp reality is gone only a few men left in one peace in this "place" were madness and chaos rain the few survivors most put there hate aside to find a way out of this madness

Expect me to jump in today. I'm going to do a bit of research as I am rusty with 40k. Has anyone played Battlefleet Gothic? Its the game with the ships of the fleet. Check it out on the wiki for a cool view of some canon ships.
I like the idea of the survivors coming together. So I'll most likely start aboard some sort of ship, fighting or preparing to fight the Tau. I'll make it so we know the Space Marines chapter will be showing up. I have a few ideas about what will happen with my character.

Oh and so far, the Tau was just my suggestion for an enemy. I don't think anyone else is playing them. So we don't have to worry about them joining our side. Maybe if we do meet amongst the fog of war, we could be fighting against them, looking for a way off the planet.
