When any human born on the planet Kehlana hears the word Nasiria, they think of a vast desert of ruthless anthropomorphic people calling themselves Kehlans - the first to evolve on a desolate world covered by an endless ocean and a single continent known as Kargana. But think of humans as a Kehlan who was born in Nasiria, and you might see a cruel and oppressive people with a history of atrocities committed in the name of 'progress'. No matter which side you see, however, there are flaws both subtle and terrible. As the Nasirians fight among themselves to claim the seat of a long-forgotten empire, several human-dominant city-states have gathered along the border to proclaim a Crusade that could one day tear the already-loose fabric of Nasirian stability apart.

Now the bicentennial starfall, with its sparkling dust cascading out of the night sky like the tears of a thousand spirits, has brought with it the promise of a grave new era in Nasirian history: the Age of the Moon, of which the ancient caliph Nasir I predicted seven shadows enveloping the people - the beloved children of the godly Progenitors - in total darkness. In the hopes that they could face these future threats, the ten Ephors have set out to gather those they believe worthy to become Nasirian Knights and face the oncoming evil as the rightful successors to a group that had long since faded into history.

Here is where the journey begins.

((NOTE: This setting is Low Fantasy.))
Basic Premise
The Premise is that the world will very slowly gain magic, and characters will react to it in their own ways. Note that the first few scenarios will include very few trace amounts of magic, if any. The idea is to establish both characters and players getting used to a world with no usable magic so that when things start changing around them, reactions will be more genuine than could otherwise be achieved.

Age and mortality also become factors, but players are free to make their characters single-use for particular scenarios (a.k.a. one character for one scenario, another for another, and so forth).

And for those wondering how this could ever work, since magic is treated as a sacred cornerstone of Fantasy in most settings, have a look. Even the famous A Song of Ice and Fire uses a similar concept, though I'm not particularly fond of it being a soap opera dressed up in medieval garb.

This setting can be roleplayed either with or without a scenario (which includes an objective or two) and with any number of players. I can do one-on-one or group with different players. However, for those interested in having a little direction to start with, here's the current scenario(s) taking place. Note that you can find it/them under 'Find RP' on this site, if you're interested:

Ongoing Scenario/Campaign:
Fides Exitialis (43 BE) -- It finally happened. Nobody heeded the warnings of prince Ahmed of Burhan's daughter, Anya. She predicted the Crusaders advance into the western frontiers of Nasiria three years before it happened. Now the Volgi are a people without a home. Composed of both human and kehlan professing the Nasirian faith, the Volgi were a prime target for the Crusaders' hatred. Those who weren't slaughtered in the initial assault were often burned at the stake or humiliated in front of their people. Anyone that survived fled east to the city of Qarafurait, where the governor first refused them entry. Meanwhile, several Crusaders hunt them down. In their sorrow, aimless and broken, will any who survived this catastrophe find peace, take vengeance, or aid the remaining?
Current players: SubjectHazard; Danwin

(note: players and characters listed have agreed to group RP; one-on-one players/characters won't be listed in order to respect their privacy -- also, character profiles not updated to reflect the setting won't be listed, to avoid confusion)

Timeline of Events
4th century BE: The Volgi migrate into eastern Imagria.

3rd century BE: Fahim the Wise, a Nasirian priest from the realm of contemporary Burhan, traveled west and visited the Volgi. He successfully converted a portion of the population, and over the next two centuries, the Volgi would be completely ingrained in Nasirian philosophy and religion. Various Nasirian kehlans would also settle among the predominantly human Volgi people.

49 BE: The vizier Haffshi conquers the Volgi and forces them to aid in his fight against Zinida and the Crusaders.

47 BE: While Haffshi focuses his attention on defending against the swift advance by vizier Zinida, the Crusaders march in Zinida's wake into Volgi lands, beginning the four-year war with the Volgi.

43 BE: The Volgi city of Bali is besieged for less than a week. Their warriors stave off the Crusaders long enough for their families to escape. After their victory, the Crusaders send out a few small units to pursue and harry the refugees, stopping the remaining Volgi's advance northward and forcing them to turn east toward Qarafurait.

Oh, and don't worry about having to know a lot about the continuity to start with! The basics are right there in the first two paragraphs of this post. You can find a simpler list under The Bare Basics (I should have called it the Bare Necessities) on this page. ^^;
Would we be required to play as one of the pre made races to join the group?

Preferably, since any other race would have to have similar limitations to real-world humans and animals (and physics, for that matter). Provided that's the case, then certainly! However, I do apologize if this is too restrictive for you!

This will change in some later scenarios when more sapient species will emerge with vastly different strengths and weaknesses (with physics becoming less of an issue over time). The basic idea is outlined in the premise (which you can see at the top of the 'information' tab on the site):
The Premise
This setting will be used in a number of separate scenarios. It begins without magic for twenty years, during which time both characters and the setting can be established in detail. At the start of the twentieth year, magic gradually makes a comeback, starting with the reappearance of supernatural creatures (from least magic-dependent to the most) and ending its first phase at a point twenty-five years later. The second phase is marked by the appearance of magic in a useable form, starting with severe limitations that are slowly chipped away each year for a century until there are few obstacles to any powerful sorcery.

How each character responds and adapts to this change is part of the theme. Aging and coming to terms with mortality is also supposed to play a significant role.
Brownie points awarded to those who are also willing to create new generations of characters over time!

If you'd like, feel free to share your idea and we can brainstorm on how and where to include it in the setting! :)
Well, if the world is set in a vast desert, I'm kinda surprised you didn't provide any reptillian sub races for the Kehlans. I mean, reptiles are amongst the msot common creatures in a desert, aside from insects. Also kinda think there should be some bird sub races as well.

The reason you don't see any reptiles yet is because of a long, lost history that'll be revealed once they start reappearing later. As for the bird races, physics would make them untenable in humanoid form. They did exist once, when they could rely on magic to propel them, but the likelihood of them being able to fly (or otherwise exist) in a world without magic is highly unlikely (if not near impossible).

If you'd like to know more about either of them, I can PM you the description(s)! I don't want to spoil anything for everyone before the scenarios involving them come out though. ^^;

Physics is also the reason the kehlans have more humanoid limbs than the usual 'furry'. The paw shape and leg structure of animals evolved to best help them walk on four legs, not two. For moving about on two legs while using two arms for other things, the human shape is best suited (in Earth-like gravity).
Oh I wasn't saying the bird people had to fly XD I just meant bird-like people.

But in the groups current state though I don't think I'd be interested in joining. I might join once magic is introduced but for the moment I don't think I will.

Can't say I'm surprised, but thank you for responding to the OP. :) I figured most players would prefer magic and decide not to give this a try as a result. It probably takes an interest in actual medieval history to appreciate it, or at least some historical dramas of the period. That, and it doesn't quite fit the standard Fantasy setting everyone expects.

I just thought I'd take what I know and give it a little dose of fantasy. Low Fantasy, if you will? ^^;

Something like A Song of Ice and Fire without the emphasis on being a medieval soap opera.
