So I ran out of char slots, but I bought another slot. Is there any possible way to move an already existing character into the free slot?

For anyone else finding the thread in the future who has the same question, the answer is that buying an item that gives you Epicness or a la carte character slots just puts that item into your inventory. You can still decide to save the item for later, gift it to another person, or even just put it on display.
But if you want to add the benefit to your account, go to your inventory and use (not display) the item. Here's a step by step guide: http://www.rprepository.com/help/inventory#283
