Hey, all. I've been having this issue every other night for a couple of months now and I finally decided to give it a post here since it hasn't been relieving itself after all this time.
To put it simply, late night, usually around 2-6am (CST), I (and several other friends of mine) receive a time-out or 504 gateway error around this time, usually alleviating itself after anywhere between 3 to 5-ish minutes, seldom more but never less.
I didn't think much of it, until I considered it to be a bit of an odd hour to experience issues, since I feel it's more of a low traffic time- though I could be wrong. I'm not even truly sure if traffic would effect it in that way. That, and even after the server update the site has had, this is still an ongoing thing.
Just wondering what exactly may be the cause of it, is all, and if anyone else is aware of it? It happens fairly often, unfortunately. If it matters, I'm running the most updated version of Chrome at all times, as are several of my friends, albeit a few who use firefox instead. This seems to be an issue across multiple OS's and browsers, so I wouldn't think it's related to that... I considered it may be my internet (it's horrid as I live in a highly rural area) but even my friends with MUCH better connections are having this issue at the same times that I'm experiencing it.
Anyway, it's not a huge deal, as it often comes right back up, but I do wonder what could be the cause! Hope I explained it well enough!

The site backup runs at 1am PST every night. It's a pretty resource intense process, resulting in sluggish responses or sometimes even timeouts for about 3 to 5 minutes while it's happening. Could that be what you're encountering?
That sounds very much like it could be the case, as 3am is the most frequent time this seems to occur. 3-5 minutes as well... sounds exactly it! I'm assuming that's what it is, then. Makes sense. Thank you for the response!
