hello, i'm pretty new to this website and i'm kind of confused on how groups work. i'm not sure if i join the group as myself or whatever character i want to use for the roleplay, and i'm also not sure what happens after that? are there forum posts where the writing takes place or..?
It depends very much on the group. You may want to ask your questions to the person in charge of the group you want to join. However, they have options to restrict who can join, so whatever options you are given during joining should be okay with them.
