I think a useful addition would be character critiques, for anyone thinking theirs need work. Maybe a widget option, and you could go to some section of the site and see characters looking for critiques?
You can enter custom text in the Kudos and Guestbook widgets, maybe that would work for what you're suggesting?

Yeah, I know it exists, but if someone wants to give a critique they'd have to search through random profiles. It would be easier to go to a section of the site for it.

I just wanna hop in here to say that kudos is specifically for saying why you would recommend a character/user to others, so it would not be the appropriate place for critique even if it's asked for.

The RP Discussion board is a good place to go for advice! Character critique threads have been quite successful there, maybe give that a go?

Yeah, those do seem to work, but I thought it would be interesting to have a section for it so if you felt like giving critiques you could go there.

you could go around and PM the Guy, work as well. ;)

Like to remember we offers critics to those de know, opposite could ne pretty unsuccesfful and rash.

Not sûre I understood, do you suggest creating a new section on forums where we van post pour characters for critic?
Kitten Topic Starter

Yeah, something like that.
This is an intresting idea. I like it because it could probably help others making their characters learn how to make their own better as well....though youd need to be brave enough to do so.

Id certainly put my characters up.

Maybe.

If I was brave.
Kitten Topic Starter

Heheh.
I'd put a few of mine up, probably.
But you could also specify, like you only want a critique on the characters personality, or history.
Very smart. I really like this idea.
I like this idea, and it should very much so have an opt-in opt-out feature to it if it should come to pass. However, at the same time this may create more issues for Mods as some may take advantage of this and perhaps tarnish it by using it as a means to tell people to change their character for following a trope that they are not a fan of, etc. That is to also say that some do not understand how to properly give constructive criticism and merely give criticism.

I think if this would be added to the list of potential updates to RPR, perhaps there can be a positive emphasis, as Rat points out for the Kudos function, for this critique widget, making it so that it is clearly not for flaming on a character.

Though for now, I would also suggest as Rat does, to post in the RP discussion for critique if you are actively seeking it out for a particular character. You could also run it by friends and demand that they be brutally honest. XD

Yeah, I often ask friends for help and I'm pretty good at seeing plot holes (I know some of my backstories have plot holes ugh) but it's always nice to get some help.
But it would give the mods more work if people were rude about it...Maybe you could say in the title that the character is Canon and that you don't want critiques on the universe or their canonical traits, just how you're writing them.
If it's a fan character, the rules could always say not to attack them for that? I don't know.
But I guess I'd just like to see this and I'd use it a lot, but I'm generally a thick skinned person so it appeals to me more.
But it would definitely be optional.
One of the problems I can see is I would get kinda annoyed if someone not good at roleplaying critiqued one of mine badly. But there isn't a way to prevent this, I guess.
Maybe their would be a character limit to assure that you'd write longer critiques?
Kitten Topic Starter

I think I'll make a temporary thread for it, because I really would like to get some decent critiques.

Without getting into a peeve discussion (let's try to avoid using phrases like 'not good at RP') if someone offers constructive criticism that you don't personally find useful, you can simply not take it to heart. Doesn't have to be a problem. There's nothing wrong with putting your preferences first. It's all done for fun after all. :) Not all advice is going to hit the nail for you but that's just the nature of opinions!

I also have never found word quotas to help. It can turn a gesture of good will into a chore, and it doesn't guarantee quality at any rate. If something can be said simply and clearly then the forced padding might dissuade me from leaving my opinion at all.

I'd prefer direct honesty, but not brutal, mostly. I wouldn't forbid any types of critiques unless they were just obvious bullying, if I were in charge that is.
I'd like a forum for this, so yeah, it was easier to find when you're in the mood to crit or want some help. Maybe a writing help forum in general? We already have a creativity thread for art and writing (mostly art) but it might be nice to have a "read/look at this and tell me what you think to make it better" section too. Sure you COULD put a thread into any of the other ooc forums but it makes them a bit harder to find and a bit more cluttered.

I'd actually rather like subforums tbh, just in general. Because the very broad forums are quite hard to navigate sometimes.
You know, splitting the adults section into "r18 smut threads" and "just want to rp with adults" becuase man it's annoying having to trawl through all that just to find some grown ups who want to rp normal stuff.

Likewise with the art and creativity thread you could have a subthread (if that's possible here) for critique and wips. Because right now most of that thread is "comission and request" threads with not much else. Some subforums to encourage sharing for the sake of sharing would be nice I think.

It'd make it easier to find the sort of threads you want or need at that moment.

I think critiques would have to be on the forums, because having them on the character pages would be a bit cluttered and also rather intrusive I feel. Having to trawl through pages to critique would be irritating, while having a forum you could click the page link, read through and type out your thoughts and have a conversation would be nicer. certainly more helpful.

I'd love more critique threads, not just for characters but worlds or ideas, even artwork or pieces of writing. I think it could be very useful to people. But people won't post these sorts of things unless either someone else already does (like you have) or there's a specific forum that says you can.
Keeping it all in one place could be nice and neat, and also make moderating a little bit easier. Having to search people's character pages would be a pain to mod. Just having another forum would be easier.
