Kim suggested I post this tutorial, as many people here might be interested in creating their own armour for larp and costuming.

At the bottom there are some links to other sites showing off some really impressive costumes made this way, so those are worth a look too!

I'm going to attempt to make Commander Shepard's N7 armour from Mass Effect this way. Ambitious and probably insane but that won't stop me! :)

I thought this was so cool when you showed me yesterday. I had no idea it was possible to make reasonably good looking armor so cheaply. Not to mention without metal smithing skills.

I used craft foam once to make a sort of Glina (from wizard of Oz) crown, but it only looked okay from a distance. In retrospect I wonder if a lot of that was not using the correct paints to get a proper shine when I was done, or maybe not doing enough coats. As I recall it was a very thirsty material and just drank the paint right up. But I know there are even sprays that will add an extra shine to things if your paints aren't doing it..

I prefer my real leather armor. ;) But I've always admired what you can do with craft foam! Given enough love it's really impressive!

I certainly will! I larp a good bit, and I'm trying to find ways to better the costumes for my characters in ways that look professional, but don't break the bank. I'm using outright leatherwork for my one dumb fighter, but I happen to have an ice-themed templar who thinks herself quite classy and needs armor that's honestly more decorative than functional. This method should be fun to play with, and in the end will hopefully give me something I can go wild in.

Another thought being that I bet this isn't NEARLY as hot as real armor, and that's a real concern in the summer >_>

My one question is how well it'll stand up to being worn out in the rain, and I promise to post pics for you if I succeed!

Please do! I'd like to see more craft foam creations as I work on my own.

Last night I made excellent progress with the N7 armour, I'll take some photos later.
