You awake to a desolate waste land. Nothing but ash, death, and anger surround you. Pieces of the world are rebuilding but you can not escape the pain that has been inflicted upon this soil. The world has destroyed itself in a war among the magical factions, and the humans were stuck in the middle defenseless to the peril around them. Most of the magical factions have all but destroyed themselves reaching for power until the few that remain fled into hiding in order to stay alive. All that remained was the non-magical humans watching the world burn and trying to right the wrongs of those who had burned it to the ground.
The magic in the world weakened, a flame sputtering threatening to go out. As the magical war began to die away the humans took over power of the what remained of the world populations. Small cities formed as they started to regrow the world. However they started to hate all magic, to fear its power, so it was banned under penalty of death.
Many magic users are being publicly burned or murdered in the streets whether they aided in the war or not. Human's striking fear into all magical beings to turn down their magical gifts. Small rebellions have started against the humans for magic to once again restore power and end the killing. Pitting humans against the weakened magic of the realm.
{This is a dystopian world where ALL magic is banned. You can have any magic user you would like but keep it reasonable. No "god-mode" characters that can destroy the world with snap of fingers. Magic has just about destroyed itself, and the magic in the world is currently weak.

"OW!"
"Well stop squirming and hold still and this will be over faster" scolded a male voice.
"Well you should stop toying with it and just pull it o-!" a younger female voice snapped back but was quickly cut off by a squeak in pain. Xander held the 2 inch shard of wood for his sister to see as she rubbed her bleeding palm and pouted. They sat on the edge of a small town where they had only arrived the night before. This new town they would call home for a few weeks until moving on before the humans could suspect them of being anything different than travelers.
While cutting wood for a fire to cook their breakfast on Ember had unfortunately got a rather large splinter in her palm and created quite a fuss before Xander could pull it out.
"Should we forget breakfast now? I'm sure you woke up the whole town with your screeching this morning" Xander mused to Ember pouting face as her palm softly lit with flames sealing the wounded flesh and leaving a dark scab. It was the best she could do to stop the bleeding until she mastered her power better. She ignored Xander's disdainful look. It was too public a use of powers for his liking but she was sure there was no one watching. And no one knew them anyway!
