"If I am mad. It is mercy! May the gods pity the man who in his callousness remain sane to the hideous end! ~H.P. Lovecraft~
NIPGULL (played anonymously)

"Let us read, and let us dance; these two amusements will never do any harm to the world." --Voltaire
I'm a glutton for good quotes, short powerful lines that bring a belief home. The one I've had on my profile for the past some-odd years means a great deal to me:
"Make it dark, make it grim, make it tough, but then, for the love of god, tell a joke."
-Joss Whedon

When I write, I typically lean towards realistic (non theatrical/dramatized) character reactions, consequences, and behaviors. Oftentimes this gives my plots or scenes a heavy "weight". I try to reward characters involved with something lighthearted later, or even just crack a joke OOC to lighten up the mood. It's important to find an excuse for writing to not be all doom and gloom, no matter the context. Themes of somberness and sorrow are only healthy in moderation.

Meanwhile, my main character's page is riddled with quotes for flavor, lines that inspire me while writing him. For a lord who's suffered strife and conquered innumerable obstacles, I picked for his primary:
"It matters not how strait the gate, how charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul."
-William Ernest Henley
A few favourites of mine:

"I’ll be your slaughterhouse, your killing floor, your morgue and final resting—"
Richard Silken

“Son,” my father said. “Here’s the score.
Once a thing tastes blood, it will come for more.”
Sherman Alexie

“Once, I saw a bee drown in honey, and I understood.”
Nikos Kazantzakis

"You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig."
Blondie, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

"I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.
It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what."
Atticus Finch, To Kill A Mockingbird

"For the first time in my life I saw the truth as it is set into song by so many poets, proclaimed as the final wisdom by so many thinkers: the truth - that Love is the ultimate and highest goal to which man can aspire.
Then I grasped the meaning of the greatest secret that human poetry and human thought and belief have to impart:
The salvation of man is through love and in love."
Viktor E Frankl, Man's Search For Meaning

That Henley quote evokes such resilience and courage. I love it!

Props for your literary bouquet, what a rollercoaster, Kazantzakis took me down then Frankl brought me up again.

It's hard for me to choose any one quote. My main tends to fall back on them to help her make points in a conversation, or to help her understand someone elses line of thought. Like Libertine posted earlier, too, the characters page has a lot of meaningful (to the character) quotes.

I think some of my favorites, though, are:

'Strive to be a warrior and scholar. Be forged in fire and tempered by knowledge. If not, you will lack the courage to fight for your ideals or lack ideals worth fighting for.',

'Real knowledge is knowing you don't know anything, and thus, can learn everything.',

and

'You never know how strong you are, until being strong is your only choice.'.

{That last one's my favorite. Bonus Azilie quote I have assigned somewhere:
"Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars."}

For my tundra-dwelling snow elf, I gathered up quotes that best suited her people's tribal nature. They're wild, but not without culture and care, a very spiritual and practical people with a tremendous respect for nature.
You know, once something freezes, it's solid. That's the key to the arctic - they didn't fear the cold, they made use of it.
Wade Davis

They wore their strange beauty like war paint.
Holly Black

Remember the rights of the savage, as we call him. Remember that the happiness of his humble home, remember that the sanctity of life in the hill villages of Afghanistan, among the winter snows, is as inviolable in the eye of Almighty God, as can be your own.
William E. Gladstone
