Honestly dont remember where it first started but i do remember rping with close friends of mine a lot!!
I loved to experiment with writing in elementary school, and I excelled in it. I discovered RPing on a fandom forum way back when and I thought it was the coolest thing--interactive writing, basically. And it challenged me. I think we've all had an issue with an online bully making fun of your grammar or English or RP style, lol, and that always drove me to do better. Writing is a personal hobby for me, but RPing is a way to experiment in ways you can't on your own.

Then I met some people on Neopets who are still my friends today. And, honestly, it's not so much about the writing itself for me anymore. Now it's about exploring the characters for me, and I'm much more casual with it.
I like making stories.
Believe it or not, I started with a bunch of friends in high school, passing around a notebook as we wrote playful and stupid script Rps together. XD

I only found out that RP was a thing online when I was on FanFiction browsing the forums. I am still in that forum to this day and we have created some amazing things together, including my original fantasy world, Veritae.
I started back on AOL instant messenger in high school. I didn't think a lot of it at the time, and eventually stopped for a good while, but then a good friend convinced me to get back into it again, to help develop characters for my books that I write. And now I'm totally hooked and love roleplaying. xD
I stumbled into it just knowing the right people on a writing site to get invited to a "cyber city" someone created.

Prior to that, I knew of tabletop but didn't play, and I'd just had exposure to a few video game RPGs, mostly through my older brother. The first that stood out was Chrono Cross. The music still makes me very happy.
Online, it was back in 2000 in the Gorillaz Chat-O-Matic. Moved to yahoo groups, got coerced (in the best possible way) over to LiveJournal and the like, dabbled a bit in Tumblr. Offline, I had a TMNT game going for about a year.

Of course, I've been into acting and writing and pretending my whole life, so there's that too.
Posted a similar topic not too long ago, in case anyone wants to respond to stuff there XD https://www.rprepository.com/community/forumthread.php?t=64839

Honestly I think my first experience with RP'ing was before i knew it was a thing, on real time chat platforms like IRC. Before long I was roleplaying with the same community I was part of on there, on the forums made for the nation sim game we were part of. It was insane, ridiculous, and no rules everyone could agree on (and no moderators for any of it XD). And I cringe to think of the newbie mistakes I made way back then--a character complete with a background worthy of being in a Shakespearean tragedy was actually the most believable of the ones i made and used, I had no consistency, no concept of posting order at all, the only thing I did understand was not to godmod and I had to deal with one or two players I otherwise liked crossing that line more than once, too (before I set them straight anyway). XD
