I might be the only one who does this, lol, but I am constantly clicking on the Community's tab "Browse Characters" button. And I very often find characters I love, love, love and would like a convenient site mechanic to just..go back and look at them because often they are just lost to the constant rotation.

So I was wondering if a "favorite" or "heart" sort of mechanic would be something people are interested in? I'm thinking it's private (or public maybe if people want to display their "likes") and writers can opt in/out of letting their characters be favorited?

Clearly I only have an inkling of an idea here, but I guess I mostly want to see if others have a similar want/idea.
I know what you mean, a bit. Sometimes there are characters that aren't in a continuity with me, that I'm not friends with and/or probably will never interact with, but I just want that person to know that I think their character's neat by sending them a "like". I'm a bit shy about sending a person an entire PM about that, although I've gotten a few from people liking my own characters.

I guess it could have the added functionality of adding their updates to your feed like 'friended' characters do, but that ends up a little stalkerish if they can't opt in/out. I like your idea better--where you can just go back and see your list of 'likes' and revisit a neat profile. Or maybe have something on your profile under your Kudos that just reads 'favourite characters' and shows a little cluster if icons.
I love this idea!
I think this idea is neat, just because I find characters that I may want to rp with, but am not currently accepting RPs, so I like to save the link...

How is this different from just bookmarking using the bookmark feature already built in to every browser?
I think it's a super cute idea - not unlike toybox ans instagram. 😍 Character watching is a hobby of mine because I adore so many concepts from a distance.

I, for one, don't use the bookmark feature on my browser because it clutters up my window and drives me up a wall.
There seems to be an aspect of it informing the character creator that someone likes their character, but I'm with Cami on this. Anything that goes into my bookmarks is never seen again, and bookmarks don't have pages to break things up when you've gone and saved just way too many really cool characters.
Bookmarking can break if someone changes their characters url if they have a custom one, and I really do like the idea of it letting the player know someone out there is seeing and liking what they’ve put together. I used to be the type to sprinkle kudos on random profiles if I liked them, but having something that people can see on your profile as...characters you like? Is neat to me too. At least that’s what my take from it. 🙈

I usually just take mental note of the name, as I find myself browsing quite frequently.

I do think there a lot of drawbacks to simple bookmarks. The most obvious one being that bookmarks don't necessarily follow me between computers or between my computer and phone. Having a "like" system would make sure I can easily access those characters anytime I'm on RPG.

On a personal note, I tend to forget about bookmarks. I have things bookmarked from years ago that I've never clicked again, lol. But on any account I have, I often go back through my likes or favorites or whatever. It also brings those views back to the person who created the content.

Then there's what people have already said:

I mean, couldn't you say the same about friending someone on here?

The Browse Characters feature is really cool, but I feel like its potential isn't being tapped into. If you add the feature to add characters to a list similar to our friends one, I think that would be enough? It is the same as a bookmark but you could expand onto that and... Besides, keeping things onsite feels a little better, I dunno.

But yeah like Kim I look through my bookmarks frequently and I'm still finding things I don't even remember like I'm scared at this point

The mechanics of this is quite easy to do currently. What I do is use a character of mine and I have added a 'Text' section to their profile and named it 'Those who I'd like to know'.

Then when I find characters i like or am intrigued with and maybe want to see about future RP and/or chat, I copy the character URL and paste it on that text page. Using BBC I put [ url=paste character browser address]Name of character[/url] It then appears as a list of names I keep.
I think this is super cute! I feel like in a way its a "follow" button to a small extent. I'm following some very artsy twitter accounts and the option to follow them just made them feel more accessible than if they were slotted into my bookmark tabs (which are a horrible cluttered mess on my behalf lmao)

But I can also understand if it might take a hot minute / some overhauling to implement.

I would like this feature so long as no one else gets to see how many people have clicked the little heart on other people's characters. I honestly wouldn't want people to see how many my characters have and don't have. I wouldn't want to look at other people's characters amount of hearts either. However, if I might offer a suggestion...

Why not just Kudos the character's you really like? Even if you haven't written with them you can leave that person a message to tell them how awesome their character looks without offering up to roleplay.

On to the heart idea again; I don't want to think of all the people who put their heart and soul into characters and then see other people's characters getting a zillion hearts, but their own character gets 2 or 3. The sort of animosity that can create from people who just aren't mentally stable enough to deal with that kind of situation could really take a hit from that. Even people who are generally quite emotionally stable could take an emotional stick from that kind of situation. It could create a competitive type of nature, and I don't think RPR should have that in it's own community.

The idea behind this is really adorable and good to come from, but I personally don't think we really need it.

I'm pretty sure Kim has already stated that like there'll never be a liking mechanic sometime on a similar topic (I'm getting ready to go out so I can't provide the actual thread atm sorry). I personally am only interested in the 'follow' thing here, but it isn't that important anyway to be honest.

Just something I wanted to point out for people who were saying that the bookmarks get too cluttered and fill in their browsers and make a mes...

You can make a folder on your browser's bookmark line and title it "Favourite People" or whatever you want and just store all those bookmarks inside that folder to keep it neat and tidy without a problem there. >_>

Can. A lot of folks already have messes beyond their ability to sort, and I've seen what bookmarks do if a folder gets too full. Scrolling bookmarks isn't fun, and just a name isn't super helpful for characters.

I also know what happens if you try to organize really well, and end up having to go through multiple layers of folders to find anything.

Yes, it can be done. It's just not very convenient.

Sharing bookmarks across devices is also possible, if you have and are willing to use a browser login, and if you know how to set that up to begin with.

Having tutored computer stuff in college, I'm well aware that for many folks, things that seem obvious and easy... aren't.
I usually write the character’s name down in my notes if I would like to possibly roleplay with them in the future but the player isn’t open for roleplays at the moment, the character is wip, etc. ^^

But I think it’s a rather cute idea; sort of a ‘kudos’ to give to characters! I think it will definitely give some motivation to the roleplayer and maybe also create some connections between roleplayers, so everybody can create more, great roleplays c:
