This topic is for discussing clues and potential answers to the marvelous symbol in Epic Week 2019. Please stay on topic. Remember, these riddles are designed to be challenging and require a group of people noodling together; don't feel intimidated if you don't know the answer right away. Every little idea can help. Research is not cheating; it is expected!

I'm not recognizing the symbol, and a reverse image search isn't turning up anything, either. Anyone know what it is?
I'm getting to unlock lots of clues this year! :D

Symbol looks vaguely similar to Captain Marvel's? But that's fiction.

Captain Marvel's symbol for sure, yeah. But... Hrm. Maybe the symbol's not related entirely this time, since it's non-fiction?
Ilmarinen Moderator

Maybe something that inspired Captain Marvel?

"Deceptive of shape"... I mean, that's like the Skrulls. Some sort of shapeshifting thing?
Seconding Novalyyn, it def looks like Captain Marvel's (and the symbol is called Marvelous), but if it's a non-fiction one this might get harder to guess:

Well, I know the name was originally used for Shazam. DC took the character from the creators for being too similar to Superman, then Marvel took the name.

Ooh, yeah Nova! Maybe the answer involves the history of the IP, not anything from the lore itself.
"Fickle allegiances" could maybe refer to the times when Marvel & DC have collaborated?

Oooh, I like that idea. Or when two comic writers or artists that disliked each other worked together.
If it's the history, I think the big clue to narrow things down is "Who tamed that wild beast"
If the first clue does point toward Skrull, it might refer to Amalgam?
"In Amalgam Comics, the Skrulls are the native inhabitants of Mars (having crossed DC's Green Martians with the Skrulls).[volume & issue needed] Mister X (Martian Manhunter and Professor X) is an example of a Martian Skrull."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skrull
Amalgam Comics was a publishing imprint shared by DC Comics and Marvel Comics
Guesses I've tried so far:
Stan Lee
Jack Kirby
Amalgam
Amalgam Comics

Heyyy that sounds right on point.
Also tried guessing Access, who was the character created to oversee the shared universe. I keep having to remind myself that this is non-fiction though lmao
Also tried:
Dark Claw
Dark Claw Adventures

Which was a union of Batman and Wolverine, trying to think of "deceptive of shape" and "wild beast"
Loki? Hulk?
I personally think it's more along the lines of who finally settled the disputes and made the dust settle into the current Captain Marvel. Since there was a lot of finicky business about Captain Marvel being too similar to Superman and whatnot. There was a whole lawsuit about it and everything.

Names tried:

Geoff Johns
Geoffrey Johns (writer who officially gave Shazam his name)
Learned Hand (the judge who ruled on the appeal on the Dc vs Marvel case)
Billings Learned Hand
Bill Hand
Billy Hand
and a few more variations of the name.

Back to the drawing board! *flails*
