My favorite kind of RP is generally based on preexisting fantasy genres. I grew up on Robert Jordan, Tolkien, R.A. Salvatore, Ed Greenwood and Clive Cussler primarily. I actually joined the Community because I was recently diagnosed with PTSD, Anxiety and Depression and thought that creating a fictitious analogy of my life would help me overcome the things I am dealing with (they say "The Lord of the Rings" was actually an analogy of Tolkien's experiences during World War I.) I have never truly participated in an RP as I don't want to burden or upset anyone with my lack of knowledge for RP etiquette. I have a german shepherd, and a wife. My primary form of employment is in Aerospace, but I would someday like to coach. On top of using RPing as an outlet, I plan on taking mixed martial arts (BJJ/Muay Thai/Krav Maga.) Thanks for reading my first post.

Hey, Zimm!! This site actually has a really good bit about roleplay etiquette, and it never hurts to ask!! I had to learn through experience myself and it led to a lot of embarrassing, but genuinely sweet and fun memories, so you always gotta start somewhere!! A lot of people I know have also made characters based off things they've lived through, and I think that's helped them a little.

When getting started with RP, I really recommend this primer on basic RP concepts as a starting place. Even if you have some RP experience, it can be a nice way to see what the general norm is here.

When it comes to starting RPs, most people start in the Looking For RP forum to find some other players. There's also a search tool that will help you find what you're looking for within that forum - click "Find RP" in the top menu, then "join game" then scroll to the bottom to adjust your preferences for game types. If you want more info on using that search tool, here's a handy help article.

If you end up joining someone else's RP, they'll let you know the details about how to join in.

If you're starting up your own RP, you have a few choices about how to proceed once you've found a RP partner or two.

1. You can just create a RP topic on one of our 3 public RP forums: General Roleplay, Sci-Fi Roleplay and Fantasy RP. Keep in mind that because these areas are public, you'll have to make sure the RP stays in the PG-13ish range.
2. You can choose to RP via private messages, and just create a new conversation thread with all your RP partners as recipients. Since this is private, the only rules that tend to apply are not to do OOC illegal things and be nice to your RP partners OOC.
3. If you're going to have a whole lot of people in your RP, or the RP setting is going to be very strictly defined and you want to have a place to store world building information alongside it, you might consider starting your own group. This gives you access to profile building tools for the group, but also to creating your very own forums!
4. In some cases, you and your RP partner might even decide to use some other messenger or game to RP on.

By the by, you can use the "launch chat" button at the top and bottom of any forum topic, whether it's in a private group forum or our public RP forums, to turn your topic into a real time chat! There's also a link in the sidebar of private messages that will let you do the same.

I'm sure you're finding your way around okay so far, but just in case, if you need help, there's a couple things you can try. You can always try typing your question into the search box, or you can check the help section. If you can't find it there, we pride ourselves on having a warm and welcoming community. Always feel free to ask for help if you need it!

Nice to see new people joining this lovely community! More people to chat. RP and just get to know! You might meet friends that live miles away from you and I think that’s pretty cool!

Been RPing for years and I would never change that! And this is one of the best of the best.

Some couple helpful pieces of information!

One, Characters. I recommend you put enough detail into things so every one who wants to RP with you is satisfied by the amount of information!

Two, rules. I recommend you make rules for yourself and partners. You don’t have to be rude about them but it’s a good idea to put your foot down and say what you will do and what you won’t do, or what you like and how you want your partner to treat you! This should be fun for both of ya!

Three, don’t be nervous to talk to people!! You may miss out on that RP you really wanted to do, or that person you wanted to chat with!! Don’t do that to yourself, everyone I’ve met is so kind and sweet that I felt dumb for being nervous!

And four, be kind. I know I praise this place like my god but there can be some nasty people on here... and when that happens, it ruins everyone’s fun. We all can’t see eye to eye but it doesn’t mean we can’t try now right? Be kind and treat people with respect, you never know what they may be going through.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I personally am just trying to navigate the site, fleshed out my profile, created a character sheet and am brainstorming what I want to do as a first post.
