Forums » Smalltalk » What's great about your writing style?

I don't know, I feel the random need to start a positive thread probably because I'm on a mood roller coaster today, dang stupid body, so:

What's your favorite part about your writing style?

And if you're feeling generous:
Shout out a partner or two, and what's your favorite part about their writing style? :D

Let's start with my reply!

Personally, I have a lot of pride in how I write dialogue. I feel like I do a pretty good job at making the characters sound like characters and not just robots (unless, y'know, that's applicable lol)

Shout out to MercyinReach who's prose is always beautiful, and there are a lot of poetic bits in there on occasion that just absolutely tug at my heart strings and I absolutely adore those little bits. <3

Also to Dndmama who can go from being super concise to having replies that are super long, but whether short or long, her replies are always wonderful in how they portray character, interactions between characters, and feeling. <3

Super special shout out to Alder's writer who absolutely blows me away with every post they make for our current RP; I'm obsessed with our couple right now who hasn't even gotten past their first scene, but god their writing is absolutely STUNNING <3
I think I write good strategy descriptions for large-scale armed conflict-
This is a wonderful topic! <3

Myself:

I really enjoy the emotion I put into posts. Sometimes I doubt it, sometimes I feel like my characters are sterile or robotic but when rereading my posts or even my book again, I realize just how life-like they are, the emotion in them. I recently compiled my novel into an ebook and put it through an app that let's you assign a voice to read it to you, and I listened to it like an audio-book...

For 4 hours.

I didn't want to stop listening to it. It really hit me hard when I realize, I don't want to stop listening to this, it's so good, even though it's 'just' a draft... and I WROTE IT. Seriously gonna tear up now lol.

Others....

Wooo boy, gonna be more than 2 but I'll try not to go crazy...

Honeyandthemoon...is just...stunning when it comes to emotion in her posts. Our writing styles match so well I think because of how much emotion we put into each post.

You!/Darkcrow.... Pick up on details that a lot of other people don't, small things that my characters mention in dialogue, in their exposition and you tend to seamlessly include information from the past, into posts that even I forgot was a thing. You are incredibly good at making the RP and it's plot more than just exciting, but...real.

Dndmama.... WOO buddy, this mama. This lady. So good. She frequently blows me out of the water with the dialogue, attention to detail and emotional depth in RP; but one rather obscure thing is...I love the way she puts poems into the RP. It's so lovely. <3

CatalinaRose.... Oh goodness... I just adore how intense and in depth, emotional, she writes her characters. The depth of the character development is just perfect. <3

Atrevida... There's so much I could say, but the biggest thing is again...if you haven't noticed the recurring theme EMOTION. I love the emotion she puts into the characters; but specifically... I adore the depth in which she thinks about a characters backstory and their interactions with others based on them. The exposition in our rps is sometimes 6 paragraphs long, but I don't mind, it's all so interesting. <3

Mayiamaru... A new partner, but not super new... One thing I have grown to really love is how they write side characters. It's a little more intense, detailed and what not than I am used to, but sometimes they write side characters so lively and real that it is just a serious delight to read any scene they are in. They make the RP about more than the main two characters, it really feels like a vibrant fleshed out world.

Valestorm... Oh BOY this guy, thisss guyyy, long time RP partner, on a bit of a hiatus, and I miss our RPs so much why? Because they are so emotional, plot heavy, detailed, lively, just amazing. He is so good at pulling you into a scene, making it fun, addicting really.

I would put more and more people if I could but I would go on FOREVER.
My ears are burning....

Me- I'm actually really proud of how well I'm able to flesh out random npcs, even ones I'm forced to throw together off the cuff. I always try to take the time to make them feel like real people with real lives and fleshed out personalities simmering just beneath the surface if you only had the time to stop and get to know them for a while. But please don't cause then I actually would have to flesh them out and that takes work. XD

As for the writing of others...

Troylocke- Humor. This guy always makes me smile. He's got a great sense of humor and it shines through every post. Until it's time to get serious, of course.

Mercyinreach- Detail. Detail, detail, detail. None of it superfluous. It all adds to the ambiance and feeling of a scene helping to draw the reader in until they're standing right there looking at the character, going on the journey with them.

Darkcrow- Emotion and agency. This person absolutely knows how to impart emotion into their characters. They practically glow with it. Their characters also never feel forced, as if the writer is somehow choosing the path the character takes. These are clearly people with their own wants, needs, desires, choices.

Animewithin- Pathos. I have never cried so often as I have when writing with this writer. But, you know, in a good way. They know just how to tug at the heart strings, even with just a single sentence. It's just beautiful.

If I didn't list you, I still love you. If I wrote about you all I'd be here till kingdom come. I only have so much time in the day. XD Please don't be mad.
ME: As of lately, I have been a fan of my larger involvement of multiple characters into an RP or an actively growing story! To take original plots or directions for a 1x1 RP, and rope numerous characters from my list into the thick of things, while also developing a more wholesome world around them all. Over all, just making the world feel alive, opposed to constant focus on the originally chosen 1 character!

Shoutouts!

Brahmastra: The one who really helped me develop the very style I have been enjoying! It was through amazing RP's with this beautiful writer that I was able to adopt their own multi directional focus and utilize it for my own writing as well! The results have been amazing, and the RPs with Brahmastra are so intensely packed with interesting faces it is amazing! <3

Kamui: The most friendly and cheery person ever! Who somehow twists it into some of the darkest and grittiest RPs I have ever had! Their character development is par to none! The importance of constant growth and direction, and how that can become embedded into your characters lore afterwards! One of a kind!

UrbanLady: You want world development? You got it! Not only jam-packing an RP with some amazing faces, but the detail and importance to the whole world around them is utterly astonishing with Lady's writing! The History, Culture, and Active Events within their Groups are ripe unbelievably immersive depth!

~~~
My love to all my fellow RPers too! Give a shout to your besties as well! <3
Me - IDK. I'm versatile and stuff. And I can sometimes be entertaining, or whatever.
Shoutouts:
Most of my partners are played anonymously, so actually shouting out to specific people on this site is difficult, but there are a few that I'd like to mention. Though it was difficult to narrow it down to just these three.
Juls - This woman is great. She has fantastic ideas and is able to weave spontaneous situations with ease. Her characters are well thought out and are just a delight to collaborate with ICly. You can tell that plenty of thought was put into each and every detail.
Ihavenostaff - Dear word, this dude is just a delight all around! OOCly and ICly, I find myself laughing at our interactions. He is witty and lively and I just enjoy speaking with him.
Wytchrose - They were one of the first people who reached out to me. Actually, I think they were the first person to answer my advertisement for roleplay, therefore they will always have a special place in my heart... right next to the potato salad. Our current situation between my boisterous elf and their adorably sweet mage... Entertaining, to say the least.
Alder (played anonymously)
I feel confident about writing character backgrounds. I try to build them from a culture and a family framework that would have influenced them, then I keep going until I feel like they all end up having a piece of life in them!
This is going to be a kudos eventually, but I'm not sure 500 characters will cut it when the time comes. Communicative, creative, unique, detailed, and oh so patient. I love the scene we started but browsing your characters ALWAYS inspires me, I'm trying not to be a glutton with them! I always get excited when I see your art around the site too, it has a distinct style and I get excited all Oh! I know that artist! They did this!
nineforalostgod
What I've seen of Nine's writing so far is charismatic, she writes with such an upbeat energy full of emotion and literary vitality. Out of character, she cracks me UP. She has SUCH a brilliant sense of humor, she's friendly and honest and just such a bright addition to this site.
Bookworm
Book doesn't go half in on anything. She's passionate about writing, that oozes through absolutely everything she does around the site. I am always impressed by her devotion to RP. I feel like I could swim through the information in her character profiles, they're beautiful!
How could I forget about this dude???
Oh right.
Because he's using an anonymous character... :P
But yeah, Troylocke. Great guy!
I am happy with my ability to create a multitude of very different characters and make them live, and also to weave plots! :D I wouldn't call it great, since there is always room for improvement, but my writing style right now (one year into roleplay) is a mixture of graphic and introspective, with a major focus on character development, and I am always looking to learn and experiment!
As to a few of my favorite writing styles here (disclaimer: this is not including everyone I love writing with and I have started stories with some amazing and talented people I am very grateful for):
@Demi: always an inspiration, his characters and writing style are multifaceted and layered, complex and lovely, and very human in a deeply touching way; some of the best writing I did was because I was trying to measure up <3!
@Nile: I feel the emotions he writes, which is amazing! a writer cannot hope for more I think! his characters are very strong and complex, and I am so thrilled to finally get to write with them <3!
@Sky: many of his characters have a soul I resonate with, and his writing style is raw and powerful, which makes for some amazing stories! much love! <3
@Krispy: last but absolutely not least, Krispy's style is delightfully playful and fun, with an extremely kind soul brightly shining through; her characters are endearing and often bring a smile on my face <3!
Me: I tend not to misspell things (if I can help it), I'm not the worst and others don't seem to hate it either so that's cool.
@Somnom : Do not ever let their humble nature fool you Somnom can weave a complex addictive story like no other. Their characters are so real and multifaceted you might swear you know them IRL. Everything they do is so thought out and seems effortless, from word choice that will blow your mind to an absurd amount of continuity. If you are looking to feel as if each RP comes straight oft of a critically acclaimed novel, look no further than the ultra-talented Somnom. TBH I don't even have the words to describe how fantastic they are! I'd need to go back to school just to write something appropriate.
@Mipps : I have only briefly written with Mipps but so far she is absolutely astounding. Her characters are breathtaking masterpieces with so much emotion and individuality that leaks into the story and their writers voice is purely delightful. She plays the things that require so much nuance and manages to not only actually pull it off every time, but make you sit there feeling for a monster about rip your head off. Mipps is by far one of the most talented writers I have met in a long time.
Me: I don’t know if I can put a finger on anything in particular. I guess present a good balance of narrative and dialogue in my posts that seems to feed my co-writers well. I’m quite descriptive and I think it important to pay attention to details.
@KingTai - a very wonderful and articulate writer who meshes well with his co-writers and is a master of the art of characters concurrently posting to overlap each other’s narratives and dialogue.
@DukeKagan a good word flow artist! Seems to be able to keep things going even when I’m having a flat moment in my muse.
