Once upon a time, Five phoenix's ruled the land.
Mystic the blue.
Pheen the Purple
Kyle the orange.
and Rodrick the red.
They were led by her majesty, Queen Ronan Leonie Victorius-ruler of all phoenix's.
Together they ensured the safety of all living things and ensured the Darking would not destroy the rite of rebirth.
The rite of rebirth was a glorious ritual that ensured the land was reborn every millennium so that after the day of reckoning, not all would be lost.
The Darkening was a mass of evil energy created by the evil and wicked thoughts of Phoenix's, and it wanted the rite and therefore the world, gone. One day, on all hallows eve, it nearly succeeded.
For centuries beforehand, the Darkening had planted seeds of jealousy in the heads of Kyle and Rodrick to turn them against each other. Everyone had noticed them fighting, but no one assumed it was more than a squabble.
But on all hallows eve, that assumption was proven oh so wrong. The Darkening's power was strongest on this day, and this was the day Kyle snapped. He attacked Rodrick and burned him alive, even the ashes so that the poor phoenix could not rise once more.
Pheen and Mystic were distraught and grieving when they found out and on Queen Ronan's orders, they subdued Kyle and locked him up in the negative space so he wouldn't die, but he would never be able to return.
The Darkening had accomplished its goal for the time being.
Now, all it had to do was bide its time once more and strike when the time was right. The phoenix's hadn't even realized what had caused their friend to go mad.
Now all that remained for the Darkening was to wait.
Time was all the Darkening had. It could wait as long as needed.
