What other roleplaying websites did you enjoy? Which do you recommend and what was the best thing about them?

So I’ve come across roleplay groups hosted on DeviantArt, independent forums, prompts on Tumblr and similar character hosting websites and I’m curious about them, but it would take me forever to get an impression of every one I want to check. I thought I’d ask you guys since I’m sure a lot of you have experience in off-site RP.

Feel free to talk about any and all places for roleplaying besides RPR.
There's been a few over the years, but these were two that I spent a lot of time on once upon a time.

Role Player Guild

Ongoing Worlds

But honestly, I've drifted away from both of them in favor of RPR. The flexibility and the community here is hard to beat! And I love that it's so easy to add a die roll to posts here!
When I was in Middle School/Highschool I used to roleplay on Neopets

I wouldn't recommend it LOL

But I have found a few rp partners on Gaiaonline. There's a pretty good rping forum there buuuut I've never had an rp last with anyone from Gaia.
Discord is an interesting platform to RP on. Sadly, the messages you are able to send might be too short for some, and breaking up your post might be annoying, but there's plenty I love about it.

1. Roles-Just having a role assigned to a character can be used to great effect. It can make RPs where some people know things, and then other people know other things. A great way to stop Metagaming.
2. Servers-I really love RP servers. It's so cool to see a setting and see all the different areas people can go. Its a great place for group RPs.

Its good for 1 on 1 RPs as well and I am personally enjoying a few RPs on discord atm.

@Juls
I thought I'd branch out to get more matchups (and try those big forums) but yeah, RPR is the comfiest to me, very flexible and easy to use. (Also for the longest time I thought your icon was a swan's head but I looked at it for long enough and finally see the little person sitting on a cliff)

Ya know... I never saw that about it looking like a swan's head. But now that you say that... I can kinda see it. LOL. Dang it, now I need a new icon. XD Maybe... if I ever get around to it.

Never hurts to branch out! The format of each of those sites is different (both from each other and from here), but they've all got their pros and cons!
Mipps

Back in the day when I got my start I networked with other fandom websites.. and me and a few people got to roleplay through emails.

There were Yahoo groups then too.. those dont exist anymore as im fairly certain they were replaced with reddit.

I did most of my roleplay through email, instant messengers when they were popular (not facebook)
and social client Furcadia.

Furcadia is still around but it has died out for the most part. There are still some decent sized roleplay circles there but roleplay is a bit more sparse then it used to be.

I dabbled on discord for a bit.. and if you can find someone with an invitation for one of those servers I have heard they are pretty good for groups. I personally did some 1x1s there and have thought about opening a group myself but havnt made up my mind on it.

All my ventures are here now, its been pretty good so I have not seeked out other places but i have /heard/ of some others

I would say Amino. It is easy to use but lattly it has been dying down a bit. It also alows you to see if the person is off or on and you can go to your own "Amino" Which are small groups. So you can rp with people all over. It was taken off the Apple store tho.
Rogue-Scribe

This is the first general RP site I joined. Most of my previous online RP has taken place on Tolkien fandom boards like The One Ring (dot com), Arwen Undomiel, and one really awesome group RP on Council of Elrond. Before that I did some wargaming and would extend the games to include individual characters. the games 'Squad Leader' and 'Luftwaffe' came to mind where I created characters and backstories for my little cardboard counter on the gameboard.

I have to thank a friend I met and RP'd with on Arwen Undomiel for telling me about this site. My only regret was that I ruminated around on various dying Tolkien boards instead of finding RPR back in 2010!
A website/forum I use is the tainted name known as Discord
Hm. I enjoyed myself on the Embyr Haven, even though I've since realized there were a lot of problems there and certain things there actually kinda scarred me. I also met a few decent folks on GaiaOnline, even though my impression of the RPers there overall is a dumpster fire where everything felt like popularity politics, though maybe I was just in bad parts of the site?

*shrugs* There's reasons why this is the only place I've RP'd in a long time. It's just about the only site I regularly visit, even.

I did get a little surge of pride recalling that I set up a newbie-assistance guild on Gaia, though. Not super successful, but I was able to help some folks get a stronger start there.

So, lately I’ve poking around those panfandom forums where it’s ‘everything and the kitchen sink’. It sounds interesting but part of me is honestly scared off by the application process/activity checks, I don’t think I have it in me to commit to places like that, to be able to post consistently and at a quality I’m happy with.
Oh, what I’d give for fandom roleplays for my fandoms but sadly my things are too old, dead or small.

Ouch, that’s harsh LOL
I don’t know much about Gaia other than that it’s a long runner. I always fancied the idea of having an avatar but those kinds of MMOs really put me off because they’re a time sink if you ever dream of affording certain items - this may or may not involve inflation (*cough* Neopets) and I never liked how, at the end of the day, people can get very possessive and elitist over a bunch of pixels.

They have multiple currency forms, and inflation has indeed been a problem. I heard that they made a change to try fixing some of the inflation issues, though. Dunno how well it worked out.

And I did hear claims that there were nice pockets around, like in the guilds and such. As mentioned, I might have just been in bad parts, and even then I met a few cool people. Even still friends with a couple of them (IRL now!), and one is responsible for me ending up here. But, uh, they also left the site. ^^;

i have 2 rp sites that i also use

wolf play < click
wolf-haven < click

i would recommend the first one, but not so much the second.

wolf play tho is for 16+ only but i think its great and all the graphics and art they have put into the site is amazing

Gaia Online was THE place for me, but this was eons ago before things went down the drain.

I particularly loved the idea of breedable user-run stores, where you would purchase a pet of sorts and it would evolve, the best shops required the user to roleplay to get the thing to evolve and generate a personality and such, it was incredible. I used to run a doll-themed one and it was such the experience, I never quite found anything like it after that. Gaia is such a unique eco system.

I also tried to join several harry potter RP themed forums but they were so.... strictly ruled and managed that I quickly jumped away;

I remember I used to be into those kinds of pet sites but I'm really not dedicated enough to currency farm lol... I wonder if there's a chance I saw the one you ran back in the day? That would be quite the coincidence. Yeah, there's something about those forums that's rather intimidating, I don't know how much of that feeling is warranted and how much is just me being burnt from silly drama in groups when I was a teenager. I'm still browsing through them today but it's a little frustrating to navigate because most of them insist on being aesthetic with extremely small text when I just want to browse something that's not their guidebooks :/

Upon reflection I have more appreciation for RPR for letting me have my 1x1's, my PMs, my anonymous characters because I never hear of painful clique drama breaking out here.

On another note, I've seen your RP ads from time to time! It makes me foam at the mouth to be able to play Bloodborne because it looks like such a unique setting to RP in (and I'm kind of burnt out of Souls...).
Seth

@SunnyD

I honestly hope not, since the art was dreadful back then, I suffer from self-cringe every time I look at it ahah;; But you are not alone thou, the forums do look pretty intimidating even today, I second the feeling. Let's not even get started in the post formatting, I encountered a character once that wrote in.... cryptic style, using symbols and text generated from those random glitch text generators, it was impossible to read. RPR is a pretty chill place, I can really appreciate that.

That Bloodborne ad is cursed, I tell you! It has been around for quite a time now as you could see and I am yet to play a single RP with the theme. I started collecting characters that were made for the theme upon request but the players simply ceased to exist all together, completely cursed. That being said, I hope you get to play it one day and get in contact if you feel like it, to plot something together! Maybe the nonchalant gods of the PS4-exclusives will bless us, pc folks, with their mercy.

I've had the hardest time finding any reliable HP communities :( They were either so severe with their rules that it was hard to play the kind of character you wanted to, or the management had drifted off long before I got there, and the remaining crowd was in a huge hurry to ship their underage characters. It's like finding a needle in a haystack!
I used to roleplay on a site called roleplay.me if I remember correctly, a few years back.

It is good for those super short, if somewhat trashy roleplays that finish in an hour or so, from my experience there. I am not sure if it is because I put my gender as a girl, or whatever reason, when you make a new account, (I’ve joined and left that website at least five times now) there tends to be a literal flood of friend requests from horny guys that just want a quick erotic roleplay. It can get annoying, but it dies off quick and being able to find the gem hidden in the flood of those friend requests is oddly rewarding.

I really enjoyed those fandom-based roleplays while on the site, and because everyone is doing it, it is easier to just pick a random person and shoot them a friend request/pm for a short, quick roleplay when you are bored...with 0 commitment. People move on fast on that site, from what I’ve seen at least, and tends to be unapologetic about ghosting and whatnot. Well, at least those I roleplayed with on that site are completely unapologetic, so it’s either to get used it or get used to it.

Though I admit I do enjoy that part of it. Short, sweet and no responsibility/commitment attached...I suppose it does sound a bit like how you would describe a fling I guess.😂

Another site is called hogwarts.io . I think it is pretty popular, and very developed. Their roleplay system is amazing- if a bit overwhelming, and those in charge are the most dedicated people I’ve ever seen. They are very clear, straight to the point, efficient and their management skills are 10/10, especially when compared to the other sites and forums I’ve been in, not one managed to get anywhere close to this site’s mod’s efficiency really, and it is always active there from what I remembered.

The entire experience was amazing from the get-go. It felt authentic, and, while I didn’t stay there for long, it was nothing short of amazing really. Their discord server is active, it felt like I am playing a mmorpg, instead of just...roleplaying, it felt more like a game really, a really fun game...although it can be overwhelming especially to those that haven’t been exposed to anything so...developed, I think, like me haha

Though, if I had the time, I would definitely want to try going back to it again XD

@Seth
Ouch, not even one bite or a PM that fizzled out? If I knew any other BB roleplayers I'd point them in your direction but...

@Birdy99
The sign at the top of roleplay.me makes me wonder what distinguishes it from roleplayer.me
RIP your inbox, I'm browsing it now and it does seem like there's a lot of players who just want to cyber. I'm not sure if the people section is meant for players or characters and either way I'm seeing a lot of celebrity photos being used.
I'm pretty sure I signed up on a HP website to do the sorting hat but I only read one of the books when I was a kid so I can't do any roleplays in that setting.

Also, I don't know if these @ signs actually work since they're all plain text and don't look 'alive' but I'd rather not quote huge chunks of text anymore lmao
