Everyone I seem to ask doesn’t do fandom,I understand some people it’s not their cup of tea and they rather build their own worlds, and all that good and fun stuff, but what’s the harm in stepping away to try something a little different? Something you can actually double up on so you’re not just being the guy or just being the girl if you or your partner asks to double up. And what I think is the absolute best part...you find people with common interests in different media you can make more friendships with

Much of my RP experience was based in Tolkien's Middle Earth, Steven Erickson's Malazan world, and Glen Cook's Black Company world. I have mashed them together in a sort of OC'sh world, and only recently got into Modern SoL sort of RP. Grated I wrote my own OCs in these worlds. I could never see the reason to write canon characters though. I did write a novella about Aragorn when he went on a raid in Umbar as a Captain of Gondor once though.

My experience is mostly ocxcanon so you don’t have to have a canon written
For me personally I got my fill on canon worlds when I wrote fanfiction for 8 years. I'm very rarely interested in writing with canon characters or writing as canon characters but I also think the lack just has to do with the website.

Twitter Tumblr and Facebook have a very heavy canon/fandom rp community and very small non-fandom community. RPR is actually one of the only RP sites I have found that is not rooted heavily in canon rp.

Which for some is nice and others isn't.

I will say that doubling up characters and pairings is something I already do. I have polyamorous pairings and rps where my partner and I write multiple ocs of ours.
I'm personally very picky about RPing with standing canon characters, because what I envision in my head for a canon character personality wise probably won't line up with how someone else sees them... and I'm very picky XD

I've seen a few Fallout based OCs on here, and I would absolutely die of happiness if I could find someone to RP wow OCs with me on here... no luck yet unfortunately. I sort of tend to morph my wow ocs that I do have on here into semi-generic fantasy forms of themselves so I might get more RP bites (when I do finally advertise them...)

I have noticed that there's less fandom based characters on here, at least so far as I've seen, which is interesting itself :o
RPR’s crowd definitely leans towards originals. I have no bias against fandoms or fan characters, or playing canons and even mixing the two, but the shows I like aren’t popular here at all.

Edit: If you’re desperate you could try putting up an LFRP describing what you want but just don’t mention that it’s from a fandom and see how many people bite. For example, if you wanted a Pirates of the Caribbean RP, describe the setting but don’t name drop the title. You could even describe the plot which might catch some people who haven’t seen the movies but are skilled enough to play along convincingly but I guess this leans towards OCs and original flavour content while you seem to be reaching out for those already in your fandoms. Sadly, if they’re not here then they’re not here - that’s why I’ve begun looking elsewhere to satisfy my niche and made myself a thread asking about other RP places which might be helpful for you to read.

My experience is mostly original stuff but trust me, you’re not alone in trying to find some fandom action (...mostly my original stuff is made to scratch an itch from a show because I know asking to RP __ show won’t get any interest.)

I love fandom and RP a number of canon characters myself. There is love for it here. :)
I rp on three platforms, here, Qoutev and Amino. Each one very diffrent.

Qoutev is full of fan stuff, fanart, fanfic, fan characters, fanrps. The culture is based more around fan stuff then original work over there, plus there is so many more people on Qoutev then here.

Amino is huge, but fandoms are also built up. Communities, characters, polls and quiz’s. So it’s feeds into fandoms much better. And it’s also a huge platform.

On here, it’s a smaller community. And there isn’t much fan based stuff to keep it alive, like quizzes and stories. Just other people. Plus a lot of people on here are older and have passed the stage of using someone else’s characters and just wanna be original. Once you do that. Lotta people don’t wanna go back.

And why I have stopped do fandom, for me personally. It was always the OCxCC thing. I always played the CC, while they played OC. And when that happens, you change the whole story or the fandom you are doing. If you have a story about demons. And someone wants to put a human OC. Your changing the story a lot. So you might as well make up your own character and use parts of that story.

Everyone is diffrent. But on here, I think it’s age and not much feeding into fandoms.

If you do want fandoms, try amino. It’s bad for ghosters but great if you find one person. And lots of fandoms.
I actually love rping in cannon worlds. Harry Potter, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, WoW, etc, and I've found some great rps here on rpr for some of them. It's nice to have a world already set up so you can just focus on the characters and their interactions both with the unique challenges of the world and its rules along with whatever story line you're telling.

I'm not a fan of rping with cannon characters, though. This is just a personal preference and why I never had any interest in writing fan fiction, but it feels too much like appropriating another person's writing. I don't have anything against those that choose to rp as cannon characters or write fan fiction. I've read some fan fiction that was great and some that was cringy. It's a genre all on it's own. It's just not for me. The same way I wouldn't take over the actions of an rp partners, I feel that way about the characters in another author's work.

This is all my personal preference and experience though. I have definitely noticed that RPR has a heavier preference for OC's and unique worlds. It isn't exclusive, as I mentioned, but it is dominant.

I love plugging my OC's into Canon worlds...I just can't portray a pre-existing character. Or maybe I could if I wrote alongside my own character....hmm....now I'm pondering this. 😄😄

Well just because someone doesn't do Fandom doesn't mean they haven't tried it.
I started out doing Digimon Fandom RP back in the day and roleplayed alongside canon of MMORPG games. It was fun at the time that I was into it. From my perspective of partners... I don't think I have ever met someone who didn't start off in fandom before expanding out.

These days I dont do Fandom because

1) I find using OCs in already built worlds is... obscure for me. like if I already known how that canon universe ends its a lot harder for me to seperate myself from it and do something standalone but in the same universe. it just .. messes with my head. I certainly couldn't pull off a canon premade character.

2) I am perhaps one of the most media disconnected people you might ever meet. I think im going on 15 years now without a cable or satellite TV connecting? Most of the time people mention a universe I have NO idea what they are talking about. Like I have seen movies, read books, watched shows and seen animes but I think there is only ONE AU that I am savvy enough in knowledge of that I could actually roleplay it and that's Fallout the Game series. I could MAYBE handle some Tolkien... save for the fact i am not very lore savvy as the extent of my knowledge base on that one is the movies I marathoned twice.
So the fact that I dont know the fandom universes when people expect me to is a real turnoff to fandom. One could argue the other side could worldbuild for me.. but no one likes it when one person does all the work. A lot of the times the fandom canon people suggest that i do know I don't particularly care for.

3) I have a real kick off building my own worlds or co-writing worlds with other people. I enjoy the aspect of being a GM and pulling from multiple influences. Its a real thrill. And you know what they say... if its not broken dont fix it ;)

Pretty sure you have at least once. ;)

I really haven't tried it much in play by post. I've RPed table top in a LOTR game one or twice, but that's about it.

But I'm confused about the doubling up part. What does that have to do with fandoms specifically? I frequently have multiple characters in one RP.

If you have a romance rp going on at the same time, it usually regards to their love interest, like someone plays their partners interest and they play their own oc at th same time and generally the oc’s don’t always interact between oc’s unless you want them to, like I have one where my oc is the “sister” of the other person’s oc and then there’s their interests with them and you swap those
I've never done fandom RPs because it has never appealed to me. And ike Juls, I'm unclear on what you mean about doubling up because I play both male and female chars without sticking to one more than the other. And I do play multiple chars if it makes sense for the RP.

Silly question, but have you tried browsing through the LFRP forums? I tend to see quite a few people/chars posting ads for fandom RPs in there.

Don't get discouraged! Hopefully, you'll find someone who matches your RP style and wants soon.

Only all the time, but I rarely get a nibble

This was my thought as well. In both LFRP and Adult LFRP I find a great many ads are for Fandom RP. a Few people have masterlists floating around with Fandom RP as well.

Yeah, but my problem is I don’t watch anime or read manga, I don’t play video games, I only have shows and movies under my belt for fandom and no one here either likes what I like, has flat out made unnecessary remarks about it, or has ever saw it and 90% of it isn’t even obscure

I should also mention the SECOND I say anything about how I go about it...bye-bye, I get ghosted
I just don't feel comfortable in an established setting. Feel like I lack knowledge even of the ones I'm decently familiar with, and I'm the sort to get irritable if I think someone is breaking cannon.

What's doubling up got to do with anything? If you mean playing more than one character, partners and I have done that plenty with just our own characters in our own worlds. And if you mean something else... what do you mean? ^^;
