Upcoming Maintenance Downtime (the 10th)

Posted by Kim on December 7, 2019, 11:20am

Important reminder: The site will go down for the transition to 2.0 at 12:00am PST on December 10th. To be clear, this is the midnight from the 9th to the 10th, not the 10th to the 11th.

All of our data will then be transferred into the new version of the site, and go through a conversion process to make sure it will work correctly with 2.0.

This process will take at least 24 hours, and may even take up to 48 hours - again, my #1 priority is that your data is transitioned safely, so I won't be rushing through this.

Worried? Want to do some things to lessen your anxiety? Please see this post on how to prepare

For those in NY and surrounding states, this will be about 3am for us.

Just saved my characters too, in case something goes horribly wrong. I've worked on them for too long, and I do not wish to rewrite it all once again. xD

Hope it never comes to that.

Anyways!

This transition will bring a new light upon us all!

Just saved my characters' profiles into PDF files. Printing isn't an option right now, but I do have them saved. I'm just catching up with this, as I've been working a lot lately. I am excited for this to happen, though. :D

@Ember_Wolf

Will the website look the same?

Mostly! It still has that torn parchment look and a very similar setup on most pages. However, it's been updated slightly all over with an eye to hopefully making things easier to use. :)

Also, there are two new looks that you can choose from if you prefer. One is the long requested dark mode (although some testers called it "cocoa mode." You'll see why if you try it)

is there a risk data could be lost?

With any update anywhere, there's always some risk.

However, I'm not particularly worried. We've been through three rounds of beta that functioned as dress rehearsals for this conversion, and no data was lost that I'm aware of.

I will also have a backup of the site before the conversion, so if someone reports they did lose something I will have a way to get it back.

I'm emphasizing "safely" for two reasons. The first is that since many people know that data conversions can be risky, I want to put people's minds at ease that this risk has been taken into account and much has been done to make that risk as tiny as possible. Secondly, I'm emphasizing it because this process is going to take a little longer then the normal website upgrade might, and I want people to know that a big chunk of that is because I'm checking on how the data is doing at every step and if it shows any signs of a problem I will stop and start over -- data integrity is my #1 priority here, not speed, so I beg patience.

Should we be worried the community will die?

Golly, if I was worried about this I definitely wouldn't have spent the last year rebuilding the site! I also don't think the community would have donated roughly $13,000 to have it done if they were worried about that. :) So I sincerely hope not.

This upgrade includes literally hundreds of new features and improvements that people have been asking for sometimes for years, so I really hope that this upgrade only strengthens the community!

To me, the point was to set the RPR up to be strong enough to go at least another decade. :)

Quite cool! I've copied my Character Profiles with Screenshots, probably better than a PDF in my Opinion.

I do have a few questions of course.
1.Will the website still look like the RP Repository right now?
2.What do you mean by safely? I am co fused as to the meaning of that wording, does this mean there's a risk our data could be lost?
3.Should we be worried on how this may affect the Community? I know that some sites die after major updates, maybe it's just me but I am sorta worried as this is one of my favorite websites.

Other than that, I really love the announcement!

@Zelphyr - They will be locked at the very very start of the 10th, not the 9th. :) The rest is correct!

To confirm: both sites will be locked on the 9th, updated the 10th, and will reopen as 2.0 the 10th or maybe 11th?
