Slaves are very common in Eprelia, to the point where most turn a blind eye even to those that are mistreated in public. There are, of course, certain laws that protect slaves, but only to a certain extent--and this largely depends on the type of slave.

Slaves are divided into different categories based on what their purpose is, or what their owner intends them to be used for. Such categories also decide what color collar they are given. The categories are as follows:

Labor- The most common type of slave is one used for manual labor. These slaves often lack any formal education or skills that would make them of use to society, and thus are hardly ever freed from their slavery. Extremely cheap to buy or sell, these slaves can be of any race or gender. Their collars are universally blue in color.

Meat- The term "meat" when referring to slavery actually defines two types of slaves, separated by gender. A male "meat" slave is one whose duty is to die for their master should the need arise. The name comes from the term "meat shield" and as such the slave's sole duty is to protect their master from harm with their body, or with their own life if need be. These slaves can be of any race or educational background, and largely consist of those with larger, stronger bodies. Sometimes male meat slaves are even trained to fight, and used more as bodyguards than disposable tools. Their collars are universally red in color.

However, when referring to a female, the term meat takes on a completely different connotation, and describes a type of slave that is nearly as common as labor slaves. Female meat slaves are used to sexually satisfy their owners, usually without regard to their own well-being. They are common across all of Eprelia, and are a large source of controversy to many. Female meat slaves can come in almost any shape or size, depending on what suits their owners preferences. Age can vary as well, ranging from as young as six to as old as sixty. In terms of races, while humans and elves tend to appear often, Beastkin widely outmatch them in numbers due to their animalistic traits being quite popular among slave owners. Their collars are universally black in color.

Political- Political slaves are also quite common, but not as much as the other types. When wealthy families get into conflict with another individual, organization, or even each other, gifting their own members as slaves is but a formality to them. Men and boys are turned into labor or meat slaves, while women and girls are mostly bred to become the latter. And while this act is mostly done against the will of those made to be slaves, many hold such pride for their families that they would gladly offer themselves for the sake of their famliy's honor, whether it be in apology of a past transgression, to help with negotiations, or simply as a show of good faith. Political slaves tend to be treated somewhat better than commoner slaves, and are almost always human. Their collars are universally white in color.

Criminal- Individuals that have committed a crime can be subjected to slavery as their punishment, depending on the laws of the town they've committed a crime in. Their collars are universally green in color, but have a stripe through the center. Criminal slaves are further divided into their own subcategories based on the nature of their crime, with the color of the stripe changing based on their category:
-"Small" crimes such as thievery or robbery with no casualties will usually constitute a blue stripe through the collar, but only if the crime was judged to be one of necessity or with minimal ill-intent. These slaves, known as "blue-stripes" for convenience, are usually given a time limit for their slavery, ranging from a couple of weeks to a few months. Blue-stripes are to be treated relatively well until their release, and are merely being punished for the sake of order in Eprelia.

There are many ways to become a slave, but the most common ways are either through kidnapping or debt. Slave traders can be found in almost every town if one seeks to purchase a slave.
