The setting is the classically named ship and its crew members. Travelling by ship does take quite some time, so there will be plenty enough time to socialize, gamble, and drink before encountering what lay before the brave pirates. The setting may change from the sea to small villages, to heavily fortified sea-forts, depending on chance or the captain's orders.
