General Overview
The laws and code of the family are almost as intricate as the laws that shackle the mainland of Italy. The 'family' (as it is commonly known amongst members) holds control over the majority of the commerce on the island, including the construction industry, food, sport and entertainment. They have celebrities in their pocket - often lending them a 'helping hand' towards stardom.
The Cosa Nostra is largely unaffected by the jurisdiction of the island and even the mainland, men can be bribed, whether they are lawmakers, law enforcers or lawyers. It is no secret that they have a high turnover of money, this is brought in through protection rackets, smuggling of any kind, particularly drugs and weaponry. They have even been known to rig elections, local and national with a well respected mafioso bringing in thousands of votes for their favoured politician. In return, the politicians will return a favour, this can be anything from sabotaging police investigations or handing over permits.
The Family deters their enemies, and also their Client's enemies just through their reputation of sheer violence and murder. If a Mafioso dies, often his or her reputation will die with them, leaving their Clients and underlings open to challenge. -
Hierarchy
The hierarchy of the Cosa Nostra is quite simple. There are numerous groups on the island, branching from the main Mafia family, these groups are commonly known as Clans or Factions. These groups may sometimes engage in conflict with each other, although this is highly frowned upon and the Boss of Bosses, who is the head of the Cosa Nostra on the island will likely bring them to heel. It is not in the family's interest for them to squabble amongst themselves.
The Big Boss, Boss of Bosses or also known as the Don or Father, lays down the law and rules over his system of dominion amongst his thousands of members and fledglings.
Verdes holds his cigarette between his lips, brow raised as he takes it between finger and thumb, unlit. How to describe the Don...? Lips turned up into a wicked smile "My Uncle, Niccolo Merullo is the current Don, he seized control after the passing of his older brother. He is pig headed and will eat, drink and smoke himself to an early grave..." He ponders for a moment, face solemn "Do not aggravate him though. Or you will find yourself in an early grave, too."
Every faction underneath the main family has their own Boss, Underboss (or Sotto Capo). The Bosses word is law. Consiglieres are more commonly known as counsellors, or advisers. Each faction may have one or even two. They take care of the accounts and ledgers and generally oversee any potential initiates.
The factions are made up of underlings, associates and soldati. The soldati are the Made Men and Women of the clans that have pledged the Omertà, the code of the family and the code of silence. They have to undergo an extensive initiation process, and finally before becoming a man or woman of honour they must kill somebody personally selected by the Don. The underlings and associates of the Clans are generally pawns that often carry out their dirty work, clean ups or run tasks and errands for the Clans. This includes working in any establishments or businesses the Clans may use to bring in profit. -
The Omertà
The Omertà is the code of silence that places great importance upon non-cooperation with authorities and non-interference with the illegal activities of the Family. In order to help weed out possible 'Rats' or 'dishonourable men and women', the final feat of the initiation into the Cosa Nostra is the murder of somebody marked by the Don himself. This ensures that aspiring soldati are in as deep as possible, only incriminating themselves if they speak out.
Speaking out about any of the family's business or plans, including the family members is breaking the Omertà... Breaking the Omertà is punishable by death.
"It is dastardly and contemptible in a wounded man to betray the name of his assailant, because if he recovers, he must naturally expect to take vengeance himself."
