Gaetano is a tall, attractive man... standing proud at 187 cm (6’2”) tall, weighing a mere 89.8 kg (198 lbs), he has light blue eyes and a long hairstyle of dark brown hair that often brings up in a tail behind his neck with a ribbon. His clothing consists almost always in the elegant uniform of the officer, a blue shirt with red-white lashes, brass gold buttons, shirt, respective waistcoat and white trousers and a pair of black boots. For when not in uniform, he dresses elegantly, emphasizing the noble slim figure.

Gaetano is a rich and powerful warrior, coupled with being a proud and passionate man. ❖ Familia Giustiniani is a prominent family of statesmen, condottieri, churchmen, and humanists which originally belonged to Venice, but also established itself in Genoa, and at various times had representatives in Naples, Corsica and in the islands of the Archipelago, where they had been the last Genoese rulers of the Aegean island of Chios, which had been a family possession for two centuries until 1566.

Gaetano Marcoantonio Giustiniani was born 30 September 1544, in Venezia’s Ca’Giustiniani, to Lorenzo Marcoantonio Giustiniani di Venezia (noble member of Minor Consiglio) and Giovanna Maria Nervetti da Genoa, daughter of the Genoa senator, Giovanni Nervetti.

As per his noble upbringing of Venetian and Genoan ancestry, Gaetano was highly educated and experienced in the military-politico machinations of both Venezia and Genoa and it was no doubt that his service to the Government would begin with the military.

Upon graduating from the university, he suffered a terrible tragedy of fledgling love caused by fascinating and beautiful young woman, her promise to marry him, abandoned, to marry a richer and more powerful man. But after months of failed attempts to recoup that love of the woman, Gaetano joined the military; and using his status of nobility, received the rank of Lieutenant. Shortly thereafter, Gaetano left Venezia, assigned to the fortress at Cagliari on the isle of Sardinia.

It was there that he discovers the existence of a group of nobles who conspire against the Doge of Genoa, headed by the overly ambitious Duke Maurizio Piombo. In a turn of events, Gaetano is arrested as a conspirator and jailed with the charge of homicide, pending his execution at the gallows without a trial. Using his wits and his friends, he comes in possession of a secret list containing the names of traitors and enemies of the Doge and has it presented to the Collegio in Venice, whose contacts gets it to the Genoan Doge just as the noose tightens around his neck.

Finally set free, and his honor restored, Gaetano returns to Venezia, resigns from the military, and is elected to the Minor Consiglio. His intent is to bolster Venetian and Genoa political and economic powers that have been in sharp decline due to the shift in world economy and trade routes away from the Mediterranean and to the New World.

But with the increase of turmoil by France’s threat of invading the Italian peninsula, and the constant threat of the Ottoman Empire, Gaetano has special permission by the Doge to retain his rank of Captain in the Venetian Army.

❖ Residence ❖
The Ca’Giustiniani is a palace situated in the Dorsoduro district and overlooks the Grand Canal, oddly enough, next to Ca' Foscari. It is among the best examples of the late Venetian Gothic.


The edifice was built in the late 15th century, perhaps with the participation of Bartolomeo Bon. The palace consists of two separate sectors, one for each branch of the family, which was later joined by a façade; these are the Ca' Giustinian dei Vescovi and the Ca' Giustinian dalle Zogie. Behind the façade, they are separated by an alley which, through a sottoportego, or portico-tunnel, connects to the central portal.

The two sub-palaces share numerous decorative features with the annexed Ca' Foscari. They have an L-shaped plan with four floors, the upper ones having mullioned windows. At the piano nobile, they form a six-arches arcade with an interwoven motif of multi-lobes circles. The single windows are ogival, or decorated with a three-lobe motif. Ca' Giustinian dei Vescovi has in the rear a court with a Gothic staircase, while Ca' Giustinian delle Zogie has a large garden.

Giulia is the youngest and the only sister in the Giustiniani family. Her father died some years ago of a chest malady, and now her brother Gaetano is the head of the family, her Mother lives out in the country with one of her other brothers, while Giulia is new to Venice and living in Gaetano’s palazzo, about to be introduced to Society. She loves the glamour and fashion of Venice, but not the ugly underside of it.
