Gas lamps buzzed low above the marble hallway. Iris stood by a stack of unfiled documents, eyes fixed on the door the hunters had just passed through. Their boots had echoed like thunder, their voices low but urgent.

Something was happening. Something big.

A newspaper sat abandoned on a nearby desk, the corner folded. “Renowned Professor Missing After Sarcophagus Theft.” Her gaze lingered on the headline. She didn’t know the professor. She didn’t know what had been taken or why it mattered.

But change was coming. She could feel it in the air — a sharpness, a shift.

And that was good.
Because things needed to change.
Iris woke up drenched in sweat.
She had seen that night again — the one where her entire family was slaughtered, and her closest friend turned her into a vampire just to save her… only to be killed before her eyes.

Maybe it was the news she had seen earlier.Maybe it was the chill of this abandoned flat with its shattered windows. Either way, the nightmare had clawed its way back. She slowly sat up. Moonlight fell across her pale skin, and her long black hair stirred gently in the breeze slipping through the cracked glass. She was still wearing her white blouse and black trousers from work earlier that day.

The weight of the dream clung to her.Unfastening the buttons of her blouse for some air, she stepped out onto the balcony. She had stayed here tonight for one reason: she needed to feed.Disguised as a human, she had managed to get through the day — but the hunger was becoming unbearable.

She moved to the balcony’s shadowed edge and scanned the alley below. It was dark and, this late, crowded with drunks, addicts, and prostitutes. Normally, she fed from criminals or the occasional hunter. But tonight, her hunger left little room for conscience.
“Maybe,” she thought, “just one. Just enough.”She watched in silence, trying to strike a balance between survival and guilt.
Until she saw him.
