I've been a bit all over the place with my reading lately but I will always recommend any of the fantasy series by Michael J. Sullivan.
He has The Riyria Revelations, first book (collected the first two original publications) is titled Theft of Swords. It's about a pair of thieves who've been working together for about a decade by the start of the plot who get hired to steal a sword from a king, and things obviously collapse into conspiracies and mayhem. 3 books total and is complete.
Then there's The Riyria Chronicles, which is set in that ten years where Riyria first met and started working together. First book is titled The Crown Tower. It is 5 books and 3 short stories, any of which stands well enough on its own, they're all self-contained adventures he writes between bigger projects. So it could be done now, or it could go on!
Then there's Legends of the First Empire. This series is 6 books, and is set thousands of years before Riyria, and is essentially the true story of all the history you get hints of throughout that first series. The first book is Age of Myth and it was written to work well as a starting point into the world as well, Riyria knowledge not necessary for comprehension if you want to be a chronological reader, though they are a good bit less light hearted than the previous series, more gloomy overall. The series is complete.
Then there's Rise and Fall, 3 books, each with a standalone plot, set in the time between Legends of the First Empire and Riyria. Essentially the empire itself is the main character. Might have some of the man's best work. The first book is titled Nolyn, followed by Farilane and Esrahaddon, each named after its central character. Excellent stuff here and as the most recently written it really shows a lot of his growth as a writer. This series is also complete.
And then finally if you're a real sicko like me and have read all of that, the reward is the upcoming series The Cycle. This one when it releases will not be new reader friendly, he's writing it with the full intent that you've read everything else set in this world, and it will be a sequel to Riyria Revelations, something he swore he wouldn't do unless he figured out how to make it work. Since he's partway through writing book 2, it seems he found it!
Anyway that was a lot but hey I like the books a lot. Here is the author's website.
