📜 Kingdom of Velgard 📜
Velgard is a weathered realm of mists and mountains, once the beating heart of an empire now long broken. Its highlands fall away to grey coasts and pine-forests, its valleys carved by ancient wars and forgotten kings. The people are proud, suspicious of outsiders, and bound by an older code than the court’s—honor forged in the dark between wars.
The kingdom’s power once radiated from the capital, but now it bleeds away at the borders. There, on the storm-torn edges known as the Marches, men like Tristan de Caerwyn still hold the line.
The realm of Velgard lies between three forces of nature.💥 To the North -:- the Ironspine Mountains, eternal in snow and wolf-song.
💥 To the West -:- the storm-beaten Grey Coast, open to the Thalen Sea.
💥 To the East -:- the vast and fertile River Halden Plain, where trade flows from the eastern principalities.
💥 To the South -:- the gentle rolling hills of Val Rheonnen, where vineyards and diplomacy both thrive.
🏛️ Government and Court 🏛️💥 Sovereign -:- King Rowan III of Velgard, styled the Ashen Crown… a sickly ruler presiding over a fractious court.
💥 Seat of Power -:- Veydrall Keep, a castle-fortress city of slate roofs and white towers rising over the River Halden.
💥 Faith -:- The Solar Synod, worshippers of the Radiant One, a faith blending saintly canon with remnants of sun-worship.
💥 Council -:- The High Chamber… lords, bishops, and guild-magisters who govern while the crown wanes.
🛡️ Seat of Power 🛡️💥 Capital -:- Veydrall Keep, on the River Halden’s central curve, a fortress-city of towers and bridges known as “The White Bastion”.
💥 Notable Fortresses ::📯 High Carrant, royal garrison and residence of the Crown Prince.
📯 Saint Orlan’s Gate, a fortified abbey that guards the southern road to Val Rheonnen.
📯 Caer Veyne, ancient watchtower overlooking the Halden Valley.
🗺️ Trade and High Roads 🗺️💥 The Old Imperial Road runs east to west through Veydrall, connecting the capital to Ardenthal’s trade cities in one direction, and the Thalen ports in the other.
💥 The Liyr Road branches north, a dangerous artery that leads into the Marches and the fortress of Caer Darlthyln in the Marches.
💥 Merchants and pilgrims travel in guarded caravans, for the Marches are treacherous with bandits and wolves.... human or otherwise.
✨ Trade and Travel ✨💥 Few merchants ride the northern road willingly.
💥 Those who do trade iron, wool, furs, and salt for the south’s wine, glass, and linen.
💥 Tolls are paid in kind to the Marcher lords; a cart unmarked by their seal rarely leaves intact.
💥 It is said.... “Every wagon that crosses the March leaves behind a prayer.” -

🛡️ The Northern Marches 🛡️
~ less a province and more a crucible…
where stone and spirit meet and test each other. ~
To describe the Northern Marches, one would say it is "wilderness country of heather moors, wolf-forests, ravine, and ruined abbeys where the wind never stills". The Marches stretch from the River Liyr to the jagged Ironspine Mountains, marking the last human stronghold before the cold, harsh, and dangerous Wylds of the north to the North Sea.
💥 The Marches are divided…👉 -- The North half , from the southern border, north to the southern bank of the River Liyr belongs to the Crown;
👉 -- the other half, the far north, from the northern bank of the River Liyr to the jagged Ironspine Mountains, to the old blood of the Marches… warrior-lords who answer first to survival, then to the throne.
The Wylds -:-- also known as The Skeld ::👉 -- extends from the Ironspine Mountains windward side, north across the cold, harsh, and dangerous land of granite fjords, pine barrens, glacial valleys, and blood-law of the north shore on the North Sea.💥 Chief Seat -:- Varosk Hold
👉 -- belongs to the Gods…
👉 -- as no king can claim it… no crown binds its clans.
👉 -- Survival is the real government of the Wylds though, but they do follow jarls and spirits older than scripture. 👉 -- Smoke rises from hearths built into stone,
👉 -- the old gods still walk in totems carved from ice.
👉 -- Their warbands raid the Marches when winter grows long, crossing through hidden passes known only to wolves and exiles.
👉 -- To Velgard’s soldiers, the Skeld are monsters;
👉 -- to Tristan’s forebears, they were simply neighbors one battle away.
💥 Faith -:- The Old Ways … the worship of storm and bone.
Life in the Marches ::
💥 Law rides on horseback and wears steel.
💥 Keeps are built into cliffs and caves rather than upon them.
💥 Trade travels by torchlight… wool, iron, salt, and rumor.
💥 Language ~ The common folk speak an older dialect and still leave offerings at standing stones. -

🏛️ Government and Political Structure 🏛️
Velgard, The Northern Heartlands is a kingdom of hereditary monarchy, led by a sovereign whose authority extends over noble lords, border Marches, and fortified keeps. The High Chamber, composed of lords, bishops, and guild-magisters, wields much of the practical power, while the crown’s influence wanes at the edges. Loyalty, martial duty, and adherence to the ancient codes of honor define both governance and society in the north.💥 The Northern Marches of Velgard, the heartland steeped in honor and martial tradition. Frontier regions where survival defines law. Example: House Caerwyn and Caer Darlthyln.
💥The Wylds / Skeld, where Local Warlords may hold de facto independence. Areas untamed by rulers, where clans, tribes, or mystical forces maintain dominion. Example: where the Old Ways prevail.
A realm of misty mountains, storm-lashed coasts, and wild northern Marches, Velgard is shaped by honor, duty, and survival. Its narrow valleys and fortified keeps shelter a proud people who live by ancient codes, defending their borders against both man and nature. Martial tradition, vigilant watch, and loyalty to crown and clan define the northern lands, where storms and wolf-song are as constant as the blood of history.
✨ Cultural Notes ✨🌿 Faith :~:📯 The Solar Synod dominates, worshipping the Radiant One; a faith blending sun-worship with saintly canon.
📯 The Old Ways persist: totems, ancestral spirits, and storm rituals guide survival and honor.
📖 Languages :~:📯 Northern dialects are harsh, guttural, and precise; older tongue variants persist in border villages and warrior clans.
📯 The common folk speak an older dialect and still leave offerings at standing stones.
🔮 Customs :~:📯 Honor and duty shape daily life. Duels, trials by combat, and oaths are central to social and political interaction.
📯 Offerings at standing stones and seasonal rituals maintain ties to ancestral and local deities.

👑 The Royal House of Elessan 👑
~ The Crown House of Velgard ~
👉 Leader -:- King Rowan III, the Ashen Crown💥 The Elessan line has ruled Velgard for five centuries, descended from the High Lords of the Old Empire. Once reformers and conquerors, they have since become caretakers of a realm they can no longer fully command. King Rowan III—the Ashen Crown—is a man worn thin by politics and illness. He has no legitimate sons, only one daughter betrothed to a foreign prince, and a half-brother—Lord Tobias Elessan, Duke of Wrenthal—whose ambitions are the kingdom’s quiet doom. The Elessans are emblematic of fading majesty: luminous in name, but surrounded by corruption and whispers of decline.

💥 Their matron, Lady Sylenne Veyrault, counsels the King directly ... and may be one of the few who knows how close Tobias’s ambitions have come to treason.
-
🐍 Caer de Costa 🐍
~ The King’s Half-Brother’s Branch, and the Realm’s Ambition (Tobias’s Line) ~
👉 Leader -:- Duke Tobias de Costa, ducal seat of Wrenthal💥 Born to Duke Phillip de Costa and Duchess Sophia de Costa ( formerly Clarke of Illvamory), both deceased.
👉 Seat -:- Wrenthal Hall, on the River Halden’s southern bend.
👉 Motto -:- “By Fire Made Pure.”
👉 Sigil -:- A black serpent coiled about a burning torch, upon crimson.
👉 Colors -:- Red and black.
💥 Through cunning and gold, he commands a private army, a spy network, and the loyalty of half the southern nobility.
💥 He claims to serve the Crown; in truth, he undermines it. His rivalry with Tristan de Caerwyn is infamous: the border knight versus the court’s serpent.
💥 Tobias believes the Marches should be abandoned, their defenders brought to heel or exiled.
💥 He is a statesman of silk and shadow... where Tristan bleeds for oaths, Tobias buys them.
-
🧭 Caer de Costa, of Illvamory 🧭
~ The Swan of the Western Shores (Alexandria’s Line) ~
👉 Leader -:- Lady Alexandria Margarete de Costa, currently in for court decision💥 Born to Duke Phillip de Costa and Duchess Sophia de Costa ( formerly Clarke of Illvamory), both deceased. Younger sister to Tobias de Costa.
👉 Seat -:- Château Illvamory, upon the western coast of Velgard. The Crown of Velgard
👉 Motto -:- “Grace Commands” reflects their belief that refinement and restraint are the truest marks of strength—an ethic that shaped their courts into the envy of the realm.
👉 Sigil -:- A white swan crowned in gold, wings outstretched over blue waves.
👉 Colors -:- White, sea-blue, and gold.
💥 The de Costas trace their line to Velgard’s maritime age, when the kingdom first turned its gaze westward across the Sea of Calesh. They rose as navigators, traders, and admirals, earning their ducal charter after funding the Crown’s naval conquests against the Free Isles two centuries past.
💥 Illvamory’s port, half castle, half shipyard, made them stewards of the western coast, commanding fleets, salt-mines, and pearl fisheries.
💥By the time of King Rowan III, Caer de Costa had become the cultured face of Velgard’s nobility: generous patrons of art, law, and faith. Yet beneath that polish lay quiet fractures—rivalries with the inland houses and debts to the crown’s wars.
⚖️ Lands and Influence ⚖️
Illvamory lies leeward of the Ironspine Range, where sea-winds soften and the River Liyr empties into the Gulf of Rhosyn.
Its lands form Velgard’s westernmost duchy—fertile lowlands rich with orchards, linen, and vineyards.👉 To the East, the Merrowen Marches, tied to the royal treasury.💥 The de Costa fleet remains unmatched... swift white galleons and black-hulled corsairs once crewed by Marcher sailors seeking better pay.
👉 To the North, the storm-beaten cliffs of Caer Veyrault, whose towers guard the sea-lanes.
👉 To the South, open water and trade routes toward the Free Isles and the distant coast of Ardenthal.
🕯️ House Temperament 🕯️
💥 Polished and courtly, yet quietly proud, the de Costas value dignity above all.
💥 They are known for their eloquence, their patronage of learning, and the distinctive swan-emblem signifying grace in peril.
💥 But with the deaths of Duke Phillip and Duchess Sophia, the house turned inward. Tobias de Costa, the new duke, has adopted a more severe and pragmatic rule... less art, more armament...
🛡️ Relations and Alliances 🛡️
💥 Allied :: Caer Merrowen (trade and taxation charters)
💥 Tense :: Caer Veyrault (coastal espionage)
💥 Opposed :: House Caerwyn (until Alexandria’s defection)
💥 Suspected Alliance :: Caer Wrenthal (Tobias de Costa and Tobias Elessan)
🕯 Reputation in the Marches 🕯
💥 To Marcher knights, the Swans of Illvamory are soft courtiers playing at nobility, yet their gold built many Marcher forges and funded royal campaigns that starved the frontier of men.
💥 Tristan de Caerwyn’s rescue of Alexandria thus holds poetic symmetry... the iron of the Marches protecting the grace of the coast... two halves of Velgard the crown could never reconcile.
🕊️ Lady Alexandria Margarete de Costa 🕊️ "the Swan Who Flew North"
💥 The last light of her house’s former gentility, Alexandria embodies the grace her ancestors prized yet rejects the gilded cage of court.
💥 Her education was broad.... philosophy, theology, languages... but she loved most the open fields and the freedom of a horse’s gallop.
💥 Her departure from Illvamory after her parents’ deaths... and her later exile from her brother’s ambition... became quiet scandal in Veydrall.
💥 When she vanished from the capital in the company of Sir Tristan de Caerwyn, poets began calling her the Swan Who Flew North.
-
🐺 House Caerwyn 🐺
~ the Iron Wolves ~👉 Leader -:- Sir Tristan de Caerwyn, the Iron Wolf💥 Guardians of the northern frontier, mediators between Velgard and the Wylds..

👉 Sigil -:- Silver wolf rampant on midnight blue, with broken sword and torch.
👉 Colors -:- Azure and Argent.
💥 Guardians of the northern Marches, steeped in honor and martial tradition. Loyalty, vigilance, and duty define the house, whose members embody the harsh codes of Velgard’s frontier.
💥 They are feared, respected, and distrusted in equal measure.
Heraldic Identity
💥 Sigil (Coat of Arms)👉 Field, (background) -:- Deep midnight blue (azure) → representing loyalty, vigilance, and the endless night of the borderlands they defend.💥 Blazon (heraldic description) -:- Azure, a wolf rampant argent clutching a broken sword sable and a torch or, within a bordure gules.
👉 Charge, (main symbol) -:- A silver wolf rampant (argent) → symbol of watchfulness, ferocity in defense, and the family’s reputation as the “Wardens of the Border.” Wolves are feared but also guardians of their pack, echoing Tristan’s protective nature.
👉 Secondary Charge -:- Above the wolf, a broken sword crossed with a torch → the sword represents battles endured, the break symbolizes sacrifice, and the torch represents guiding light and perseverance.
👉 Border -:- A thin crimson edge (gules) → a reminder of blood shed for honor, a subtle warning to enemies.
💥 Banner👉 Colors -:- Midnight blue background, with the silver wolf centered, the torch in gold casting a stylized light across it.
👉 Shape -:- A long gonfalon-style banner (rectangular with three tails at the bottom), practical for both battlefield and courtly display.
👉 Placement -:- The banner often flies from border keeps of the Caerwyn lands; soldiers paint a simplified wolf’s head on shields for quicker recognition.
💥 Motto -:-- “By Oath and Vigil, We Endure.”👉 By Oath -:-- Their loyalty to crown and realm.
👉 By Vigil -:-- Their endless watch on the borderlands, the sleepless guard.
👉 We Endure -:-- The heart of their identity… no matter the hardship, the Caerwyns stand unbroken.
👉 Tristan de Caerwyn inherits that burden… and the isolation that comes with it. The Iron Wolf, some call him, for he carries the northern code… mercy after victory, never before it.
💥 Alternative shortened war cry “Endure!” shouted before a charge.
💥 Immediate Family:👉 Father -:-- Lord Edric de Caerwyn (55) -:- Stern and unbending, a minor border lord. Loyal to his bannermen but emotionally distant, measuring worth only in duty fulfilled. Alive but aged, distant in affection. Loyal to his bannermen but emotionally distant, measuring worth only in duty fulfilled.
👉 Mother -:-- Lady Elayne de Caerwyn (deceased) -:- Gentle and compassionate, her death from fever when Tristan was nine left a hollow place in him.
👉 First Son -:-- Lord Tristan de Caerwyn (28) -:- Tristan, a loyal knight, and Lady Alexandria de Costa, a noblewoman bound by duty, fell into forbidden love. Branded a traitor by her brother Tobias, Tristan fled with Alexandria, their escape turning them into fugitives. They found refuge in the ruined fortress of Caer Darlthyln, where hardship tested their devotion. In time, with help from loyal allies and the Queen’s secret aid, life returned to the desolate stronghold. Their love, once condemned, became a quiet legend of defiance and faith, two souls choosing each other against the will of a kingdom.
👉 First Daughter -:-- Lady Evelyne de Caerwyn (26) -:- Known for her sharp wit and silver tongue, Evelyne thrives at court. Where Tristan shuns politics, Evelyne embraces them, weaving alliances and rumors with equal skill. She is protective of her family name but often clashes with Tristan’s blunt honesty.
👉 Second Son -:-- Ser Corbin de Caerwyn (24) -:- A knight as well, but more political and ambitious than Tristan. Their bond is strained... believing the family must rise in courtly power, and sees Tristan’s rigid honor as a liability. Corbin thinks Tristan’s honor makes him blind to opportunity.
👉 Second Daughter -:-- Lady Alisande de Caer Roen (nee Caerwyn) (19) -:- Married into House Roen, where she struggles with the expectations of her new household, as the Lady Roen. Writes to Tristan often, urging him to seek happiness, though her life is now consumed by her husband’s household. She remains one of Tristan’s few sources of warmth and counsel, sending him letters, though often unanswered.
👉 Third Daughter -:-- Lady Mirabel de Caerwyn (16) -:- The youngest daughter, still unmarried. Mirabel is curious, spirited, and often dismissed as “too wild” for courtly expectations. She idolizes Tristan and sneaks away from her caretakers to listen to his soldier’s tales whenever he is home.
💥 Tristan's Extended Family👉 Uncle -:-- Sir Gervais de Caerwyn -:- Tristan’s father’s younger brother, a veteran knight known for brawling and boasting. Though loyal to blood, he is often drunk and unreliable, blurring truth and tale in his stories.
👉 Aunt -:-- Lady Rowena de Caerwyn -:- Gervais’s wife, shrewd and practical, managing their estate with more discipline than her husband. She quietly disapproves of Tristan, calling him “too rigid for his own good.”
👉 Cousin -:-- Lady Ysandra de Caerwyn (Gervais’s daughter) -:- Recently married into a wealthier noble family at court. Cunning and ambitious, she uses her kinship to Tristan when it suits her political aims.
👉 Cousin -:-- Ser Alaric de Caerwyn (Gervais’s son) -:- Knighted two years ago, proud and reckless. Looks up to Tristan but resents living in his shadow. Whispers that one day he will be the more famous knight of Caerwyn.
💥 Other Family Connections👉 Grandmother -:-- Lady Iseult of Caerwyn -:- Nearly eighty, sharp-witted despite her years. Known for speaking uncomfortable truths at family councils. Rumor says she was once a lady-in-waiting to the Queen’s mother, giving her old but potent court ties.
👉 Great-Uncle -:-- Brother Theobald of Caerwyn -:- A monk in a distant abbey. He abandoned the sword for scripture but still writes to Tristan, encouraging him to temper his steel with mercy.
👉 Distant Cousin -:-- Ser Merric Caerwyn -:- A mercenary knight who fights for coin abroad. Some say he dishonors the family name, others that he keeps the Caerwyn steel feared beyond the kingdom’s borders.
💥 How This Shapes Tristan👉 The Caerwyn family is marked by a tension between duty-bound knights and ambitious courtiers. Tristan embodies the first, while his cousin Ysandra and brother Corbin lean toward the second.
👉 He feels the weight of legacy... the Caerwyns are respected border defenders but not power-players in court. His service to the crown may change that, but not without friction from his kin.
👉 Allies and enemies can emerge within his own family, making loyalty and betrayal not just matters of war, but of blood.
💥 Allies👉 Sir Roland of Valemont -:- An older knight, mentor-like figure who often defends Tristan’s honor at court.
👉 Captain Eldon Merrick -:- A common-born soldier Tristan once saved; fiercely loyal, serving as his squire, shield-bearer, and now a knight of the Marches under Tristan's command... and his best friend..
👉 Several village families -:- In the borderlands, peasants remember Tristan’s defense and speak of him warmly as their protector.
👉 The Queen (potentially) -:- If she sees his discipline and loyalty, she may become a quiet patron within the court.
💥 Enemies👉 Lord Armand de Lierre -:- A courtly rival who despises Tristan’s plainness, mocking him as “the peasant’s knight.” Armand thrives in politics, where Tristan does not.
👉 Sir Bastian du Roen -:- Once a fellow squire, now a rival knight who holds a grudge after losing a tourney joust to Tristan. Whispers often that Tristan is too dangerous, too unstable.
👉 Discontented commanders from the border wars -:- Those who never forgave Tristan for rumored disobedience when he spared a village. They see him as a man who places his conscience above his orders.
👉 Enemies of the crown -:- Raiders and mercenaries beyond the borders still curse his name as the “Iron Wolf of Caerwyn,” for his refusal to yield ground.
-
🐺 Caer Darlthyln 🐺
~ the Wolf’s Watch ~👉 Leader -:- Sir Tristan de Caerwyn, the Iron Wolf💥 House Darlthyln’s name is synonymous with the Marches themselves. Founded by Ser Rory Darlthyln, first Warden of the North, the line has guarded Velgard’s northern border for six generations. Their knights swear oaths not before the king’s altar, but before the flame in the hall, pledging to keep the wild from crossing south.
👉 Seat -:- Darlthyln Keep, a black-stone fortress high above the northern sea
👉 Motto -:- “Steel Before Surrender.” Never courtiers, seldom praised, they endure.
👉 Sigil -:- Silver wolf beneath a broken crown on storm-grey.
👉 Colors -:- Azure and Argent.
💥 Independent border defenders who swear oaths to the flame of their hall rather than the crown. Known for endurance, martial skill, and survival in the wild Marches.
💥 Defenders of the northern Marches, independent of courtly influence.
💥 Three tiers of curtain wall guard its descent to the river. A great beacon tower stands at the highest point; when lit, its flame can be seen for thirty miles. Traders from the south who dare north of the Marches, speak of it with awe; soldiers call it “the edge of the world.”
-
🐺 Caer Merrick 🐺
~ Keepfast of the Toren Vale ~👉 Leader -:- Captain Eldon Merrick, once Tristan’s brother-in-arms
👉 Seat -:- Keepfast Merrick, in the Vale of Toren, commanding trade routes and the northern approaches.
💥 Loyal vassals and skilled warriors, bridging local villagers, soldiers, and northern lords; pragmatism and loyalty guide their influence.
-
🐺 Neighboring Keeps and Landmarks 🐺
💥 The Ruins of Varrhold, swallowed by forest since the War of the Wolves, its stones now a haunt for smugglers and the superstitious.
💥 The Liyr River Crossing, an ancient stone bridge with half its arches fallen; caravans still risk its span.
💥 The Frostmere Abbey, where monks record prophecies in salt and ash… half myth, half warning.
