Union Residential is a narrow, three-story brick apartment building on the eastern side of Union Block, its front stoop worn smooth by decades of foot traffic. The exterior bricks are darkened with age and exhaust, the mortar unevenly patched in places where repairs were done cheaply--or not at all. A tiny metal box with slots for mail displays the names of the residents in tiny, peeling letters.
The front door buzzes loudly when opened, and it never quite shuts on the first try.
Inside, the stairwell smells faintly of cleaning solution and old carpet. The walls are scuffed and layered with paint, covering graffiti that keeps finding its way back through the cracks. The building holds a dozen or so small, cheap apartments, most of them one-bedroom or studio units, with thin walls and radiators that knock and hiss through the winter. Residents know one another’s routines whether they want to or not.
