A hungry tech corporation reaches out into the stars, desperately searching for it's next big product. In this endeavor, they discover a dimensionally unstable area deep within space - marking the creation of Fulcrum Laboratory. This large space-station houses hundreds of researchers and armed personnel, devoted to discovering and containing anything that can bring their corporation profit.
This unstable area is a hotspot for rifts, which are wormholes to other universes. They form sporadically, sometimes spitting out people from other universes (for example, your OC!). More stable rifts are studied and explored by the laboratory staff, often taking tech and abducting native creatures. Every organism that emerges from these rifts are swiftly contained and studied, dubbed 'entities' by the laboratory.
Sometimes, entities are found not only to be containable- but controllable. The laboratory will re-class these entities as 'expendables', and send them to explore more unstable rifts in lieu of the laboratory staff.
