  • Setting

Fulcrum Laboratory is set within a dystopian universe. Corporations have essentially taken control of earth and have exploited every last resource they can find. One such corporation is known as Axon Technologies, who is the creator behind our beloved Laboratory. Axon specializes in technology of many varieties; medical technology, communications, and weaponry.

Fulcrum Laboratory itself is located far from earth, deep within outer space. It is constructed around a dimensionally unstable area where instances known as 'rifts' frequently occur. The laboratory is a massive space-station with multiple sectors of different purposes. For this reason, pretty much all staff live on-site. All living essentials are provided as part of staff payment, but they earn a disposable income as well in the form of digital 'credits', which are the main form of currency in this universe.

There's not much traffic to or from Fulcrum Laboratory, the tight security measures make entering and leaving incredibly difficult; especially for entities being contained. Staff who choose to leave must fill out extensive paperwork, go through health screenings, and two weeks of quarantine as per safety protocol. The space station has all the necessary amenities to support long-term life, such as a large garden to grow food. Since raising animals is too resource-consuming, they synthesize artificial meat from plant proteins.

So far, the laboratory has been open for 3 years. The current year is 2065
  • Laboratory Staff

Fulcrum Laboratory has a variety of different workers. To keep things running smoothly, there's six 'main' sectors of staff.

    •────────⋅☾ ☽⋅────────•
    Supervisors

As the name suggests, these people are in charge of supervising the other staff members. The 'head' supervisor would be our site director, Sylvie Falkenrath.
Under Slyvie, there are 5 other supervisors. The head of research (Unfilled role), The head of security (Landers Baker), The mobile task force leader (Tamarisk Jundire), The head medical officer (Unfilled role), and the head of maintenance (Unfilled role)

    Researchers

Within the research sector are 2 main branches of work; The study of dimensional rifts, and the study of other-dimensional entities. Both branches are supervised by the head of research.
Both branches have a similar system of ranking. In order of highest to lowest, this would be; Senior scientists, researchers, and junior researchers.

    Security

The security sector is concerned with ensuring containment of entities and the safety of the laboratory. They make sure nothing gets in or out of the lab. This sector is supervised by the head of security, and is divided up into various teams that focus on specific areas of the facility. Rankings are team leaders and team members.

    Mobile Task Force (MTF)

The mobile task force is a group with elite combat training. They are tasked with 2 things; entering stable rifts to protect the researchers, and hunting down any entities that escape the facility. This sector is supervised by the MTF lead, and is divided into rankings of team leaders and team members (similar to how security works).

    Medical Staff

The Medical sector treats the injuries of staff members and, on the rare occasion, entities. They will also perform regular medical checks on all staff to ensure no foreign illnesses have escaped from the rifts. This sector is supervised by the head medical officer.

    Maintenance

The maintenance sector is by far the smallest. While most other mundane work within the laboratory is automated, Maintenance makes sure these automated systems continue working smoothly. They will also repair damaged parts of the lab, and pieces of tech.

  • Entities

A large section of the laboratory is devoted to the containment and study of organisms who emerge from the multiversal rifts. This can include people, creatures, plants- just about anything that's living. All of these things are considered 'entities' by the laboratory.

Initially, each entity is individually placed in a cell; sometimes modified in order to better contain the individual. Researchers will then study this entity; testing to see if it has sapience, what it's abilities are, and documenting it's unique biology. They collect samples and search for any way possible that the entity could help them profit, whether through a cure for disease or a new means of biological warfare.

Another way the laboratory may find use of the entity is if it can be controlled. Sapient entities capable of speaking or learning will be outfitted with a shock collar or some other means of control; then dubbed an 'expendable'. Expendables are sent into more unstable rifts to collect samples without risking the life of actual laboratory staff. Over time, some expendables may prove their loyalty to the lab and get promoted to a nicer living space with an actual income. They are never permitted to leave, though.

Although escaping is incredibly difficult, some entities have accomplished it before. They are swiftly hunted down by the mobile task force, and either killed or recaptured.
  • Rifts

So far, Fulcrum laboratory has made significant advancements in the study of rifts- here is their findings.

The dimensionally unstable space in our laboratory has been contained within a 200 x 200 meter room. The walls are lined with 50cm of lead to block out radiation. Entry requires you to wear provided PPE (Which looks like a sci-fi combination of a hazmat suit and space suit). Any time a rift opens up, whether it's unstable or stable, we contain it within an energy field.

Rifts open up sporadically. They appear as tears in the very fabric of space, some being more stable and safe to enter- while others are unpredictable. Stable rifts can be identified by their round shape, sporting minimal cracks around the edges. Unstable rifts have far more angular shapes with large cracks protruding from it. Stable rifts are open for longer periods, up to 48 hours depending on it's appearance. unstable rifts are entirely unpredictable and can close within seconds. (roleplaying note: each rift that occurs may get its own forum topic in the Dimensional Research Laboratories forum, and you may open up a new rift at any time)

Rifts are wormholes to other universes. Other than this, we aren't sure how they work, or why they exist.
