Underneath grey skies, washed in an almost-daily, neverending drizzle, stands a city so old it's forgotten more than most places have ever lived through.
It's a busy city but moves at its own pace - footsteps on wet pavement, underground metro door sliding shut, transporting hundreds of thousands of passengers every day, black cabs that could take you to any corner of the city without fail, red double-decker buses proudly carrying commuters and tourists alike. London has its own share of tourists of course - millions gather outside the iconic Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and the Tower bridge every year.
A city this ancient is bound to have its own share of urban legends. That barrister who suddenly spoke in someone elses voice for a whole three minutes and then collapsed without remembering a word? Fodder for some prime gossip when you catch a pint with your mates at the pub after work. And they have more stories to share. In Southwark - "Mate, I'm telling you! The whole bloody flat was burning. Windows gone, smoke everywhere. Then this bloke just walks out through the front door, no burns, no soot, gives the firefighters an annoyed look and bloody walks away!" In Camden - "Saw this schoolgirl, y'see, kneeling by a fox that some wanker had shot earlier. Wasn't breathing, just lying there on the ground in a pool of blood. She was proper crying over it, snot and all, and then she just touched its face. The bloody thing opened its eyes and nipped at her hands! Scared the wits off the poor kid, I tell ya. Left running and screaming, and the sodding animal just shook its fur and bolted!"
The stories just keep moving - from pub to taxi, from office breakroom to the kitchen at your house. From the newspaper stand to the train station. Relayed from one person to another, with a healthy dose of flair added every time it circulates. Until it evolves into a version that's ridiculous even for the hardcore conspiracy theorist. And then it vanishes, only to be replaced by a new one, a fresh one.
But the stories keep piling up. And some of them...trigger memories.
