Deep in the forest, past the thick layers of fog is a winding forest. The breezy spring air is never still as it brushes gently against the leaves of tall knotted trees and the fur of small woodland creatures as they skitter about looking for food. Patches of sunlight shine down onto the forest floor, highlighting the fresh bright green carpet of grasses, ferns, and shaded flowers. Past the brambles and the shrubs, an area finally opens up. Able to flourish in the open sunlight, tall black-eyed Susans, prairie flowers, and cone flowers grow high and bright. It's certainly a beautiful place to be.
She's sitting in a particularly shaded area of the open clearing, looking at the sky through blades of yellowish grass and flower stems. Beside her was a freshly picked pile of deep purple berries, of which she occasionally popped one into her mouth. Everything is calmed and relaxed here as she memorizes the bird song she's heard a million times over by now. But it's never boring, as she thinks birds to be master conductors, always adding variation here and there when needed. Just like the ever-changing forest. Same but somehow always different.
It was a warm day as spring transitioned into summer. The air was slightly humid and sweet smell of flowers filled it. A massive form with dark grey and black fur prowled in the darkness of the dense trees as it had done for many seasons. Suddenly it stopped and sniffed the air. The scent of the doe that it had been stalking was nearby, and the figure attempted to close for the kill. Slowly and patiently it made it's way through the underbrush as quietly as possible. Then suddenly it stopped and sniffed the air again. Its prey was near, but there was another unfamiliar scent.
Something felt off. At first, she laid still, analyzing the clouds further. When the form of a doe crossed her peripheral vision she very slowly sat up, her head just making it over the nearby grass. A deer wandering about in this warm weather was a rarity in itself, but out into the open instead of the shaded protected wood? Her eyes scanned the tree line, looking for anything that might be driving the doe to seek solace in the open.
The figure crouched down as his bright blue eyes focused in on it's prey. His mouth salivated heavily in anticipation. He knew the doe was aware she was being hunted, but she knew not from where. Now was the time and the figure wasn't about to lose his prey. He leaped from the treeline clawing at the doe as he snarled. The doe struggled as he latched on and the two came rolling towards the unwitting bystander.
Before she was even able to react, piercing blue eyes caught her eye, and everything went topsy turvy as she watched the beast leap towards the doe. She had even less time to react as they came careening towards her. Only by sheer luck did she manage to dive out of the way, her eyes glued on the display of pure brutal nature at work. At least it looked like that from her perspective. She started to very slowly shuffle away, but everything felt like slow motion.
The creature fumbled at the doe who was thrashing wildly to break free from his grip. With a loud snarl, her went for the throat. There was a sickening sound of meat tearing and moments later the doe went limp. As the poor animal fell lifeless to the floor the creature let out a loud howl that echoed through the forest, sending flocks of birds flying into the air.
Like watching a tragedy she can't stop watching. As the howl sounded she let out a small but high-pitched "eep", quickly covering her mouth after. Her ears rang as the forest fell silent. Not even a bird chirped as the metallic scent of blood floated up to her nose. It weirdly reminded her of the cold winters when she had to hunt or otherwise risk her and her family starving. She hoped and prayed that the beast would just drag away its kill and pay her no mind.
The creature stopped after his howl subsided. His ear turned and he turned and saw the young woman standing there. His blue eyes fixed on her and he slowly approached. He gave of a series of low snarls as he approached bearing his fangs. Despite his posturing, his eyes were filled not with aggression, but curiosity. As he approached, the creature slowly came down to all fours, bringing his head more to her level. Cautiously he closed the distance until his snout was almost up to her face and he began sniffing.
Her whole body quivered as the thing turned his eyes on her. The ringing in her ears turned louder even as the creature growled at her, moving closer till she could feel its breath on her face. Though once it had started sniffing her mind seemed to default to when she dealt with large dogs.
"H-Hey." Gently pushing his muzzle to the side, despite the fact this beast could clearly kill her if he so chose.

The creatures ears lowered as she reached and placed her head on his muzzle. As she pushed it aside, he closed his eyes and tilted his head as of encouraging to scratch him as he licked her hand. He then shook his head causing his ears to slap at the air repeatedly and then looked back at her. The creature leaned forward again and started to sniff her hair. The fur of his muzzle lightly brushing against her ear.
This was an honestly surprising turn of events for the woman as the creature seemingly asked for further contact.
"Well aren't you a friendly...guy?" Very hesitantly, she scratched the fur on the beast's neck and chin, as most canines prefer. She shivered as her own animal-like ear was tickled, causing her to lean away slightly.

The creature close his eyes and painted for a few moments. Then he let out a snort and backed away slightly. He looked at the woman for a moment and then licked her face before turning he clutched the doe by the neck with his mouth and began dragging his prey into the forest.
For just a few seconds she sat in shock after the beast and the doe disappeared into the shade of the trees, leaving a few measly droplets of scarlet on the ground as its only evidence. Once the sounds of the forest seemed to continue like normal she finally dusted herself off.
"Odd..." Though it was earlier than planned, she decided it was time to head home. Grabbing the large branch she used as a trail stick, she started back towards her village.

That evening, the creature had followed the woman's scent out of curiosity until he reached the outskirts of the village. He had been near the village before and had encountered the night watch before and had quickly learned to avoid them. Fortunately as he followed the scent, it let him to a small home more on the outer edge of the village. Just outside an open window, he began sniffing the air as he realized she was nearby.
The inside of the house is lit by numerous candles. From inside a slew of things can be heard, including a demanding feminine voice, a baby crying out, and the voice of the woman responding in kind, a sort of tightness and quavering to her tone that indicated she may be close to tears. After a minute more, a series of footsteps leads to a slamming door. A more masculine voice grumbles an insult before everything but the crying baby goes quiet.
The creature cocked his head slightly in confusion at all the commotion as he stared up at the window. After things had quieted down, relatively speaking, he stood up. First his muzzle reached the open window and he began sniffing as he continents stand. Once he was fully up, he peered into the room.
Inside the small room are two figures, one sitting in a ratty armchair reading a book, another trying to soothe the crying baby. To the right is a set of stairs and to the left are two doorways. One has a door, the other seems to lead to a kitchen. It's presumable that the stairs lead to bedrooms. The woman isn't in this room, so maybe she went up?
The creature ducked back down after not seeing the woman. He quietly made his way around the house and saw a light coming from a second story window. The creature jumped onto the roof covering the first story and slowly crept towards the window. The scent grew stronger as he approached. Once he was at the window, the creature peered inside.
