Hey all,
My only experience in rp is Pathfinder first and second edition ttrpg. More and more, I'm less interested in the mechanics and encounters, and want to play out the nuances of my characters' motivations and goals.
I'm also not particularly a strong improver, so I thought forum based rp might be the best channel to do this!
Any guidance would be appreciated. I'll be reading through all the rules and guides for a little bit.

Question to start:
- my characters were created within the Pathfinder world of Golarion.. how does that fit and work in more agnostic rp spaces?

Nice to meet you all, can't wait to get started!

I go by two rules when it comes to Fantasy characters such as this:

1. Ignore the setting in general. This is necessary if you're character ends up in a Role-Play with someone else's character that isn't set on the world of Golarion. By ignoring the setting in general, this allows more freedom to role-play and have fun. Having fun and Role-Playing is much more important than where you're setting is. If you think there needs to be a reason for you're character to be able to go to other fantasy settings then maybe he has a spell that can take him to other places, perhaps an artifact he carries around with him or some other magical item that allows travel to other fantasy-like settings. The possibilities are endless.

2. Don't ignore the setting you're character is in. You're character is in the Pathfinder game setting on the world of Golarion so other players need to be okay with that. And honestly, I think a lot of players would be if you ask them politely before the RP starts if the Role-Play can take place where you're character is based at. In this way, you're bringing players and their characters to you instead of the other way around. Especially if you love the Golarian game world and you'd rather not leave it.

Thanks for your thoughts! I'm pretty indifferent about it being in that world, but pathfinder characters tend to have traits based on Golarion lore - e.g. I have a character who is a Champion (paladin) of Irori - the god of self-perfection, and dying of a terminal illness. This internal struggle doesn't work so well if the setting agnostic game does not have a similar analogue. I wouldn't care much about the rest of the world, but that one aspect. I'm sure I can work it out with whatever group I find.
