Forums » General Roleplay » (Closed) Summer Soiree: The County Fair

This thread is closed to new participants. If anyone needs to wrap their scenes, you have until Saturday to do so. Thanks to everyone that stopped by the carnival, played the dunking booth game, and donated to the Teal Cove Roaring Raptors Cheer Squad!

It’s summer carnival time! This local fair takes place over the weekend in a generic small town in the United States. The specific year is intentionally not established for some flexibility. The streets have been blocked off and various vendor tents are selling jewelry, crafts, and food such as giant pretzels, funnel cakes, cotton candy, nachos, soft drinks, corndogs, and roasted corn dipped in butter.

It’s a pleasant sunny day without any clouds. It is warm, but not too hot outside with an occasional breeze. Various organizations are running the games and booths as fundraisers such as Boy Scout Troops, churches, the high school marching band, Elk Lodge, the local Shriners chapter, etc.

There is a stage for scheduled entertainment to perform throughout the day into the evening. A puppet show stage is also set up for younger children as well as a face painting booth. Additionally, there are a few roaming entertainers strolling through the event. Some are dressed as clowns making balloon animals, others are singers or jugglers.

The police department is hosting a charity jail. Fairgoers can pay to have friends and family “arrested”. Those running the jail have plastic badges and wear oversized foam cowboy hats. They will handcuff anyone who has a “warrant” put out on them as they are placed in a 20 x 20-foot jail cell. Prisoners are supposed to serve a 10-minute sentence or pay a $1 bail to get out early. The money goes to charity.

Some simple games are also available such as a cakewalk, bean bag toss, and dart throw where participants get 3 darts and try to pop a balloon for a prize. Playing the games costs tickets and can be purchased for $1 each at one of several ticket booths located around the grounds.

As you make your way through the festivities, you hear a brunette teen wearing a black and white bikini with a top hat and coattails resembling a tuxedo speaking into a battery-powered mic with a small speaker resting on a folding table. She even has a little black bowtie around her neck. The sign taped to the table indicates this booth is sponsored by the high school cheerleading squad.

“Step right up folks! Right this way,” Marie says as she addresses the passerby. “Help the Teal Cove Roaring Raptors Cheer Squad Booster Club raise some funds and help this little lady cool off!”

She gestures to the dunk tank behind her. It’s surrounded by a mesh cage. A young, red-haired girl in a pink bikini is escorted by an older girl who has a hold of her by the arm. Her hair is pulled into two ponytails on the sides of her head. The older girl opens the door to the cage around the tank and gives her a little shove and then slams the door shut. The redhead glances back frowns and reluctantly takes a seat on the bench over the tank. Her legs dangle just above the pool water below.

“Everyone, I want you to meet Tabby Blackwell,” Marie exclaims and makes a sweeping gesture at the tank. “Everyone say ‘hi Tabby’!”

A group of bystanders gives a loud “Hi Tabby” and a crowd begins to form around the dunk tank booth.

“Uh hi,” Tabby says a bit awkwardly and gives a little wave. She doesn’t look excited about her predicament.

“This is Tabby’s very first year on our squad. She’s still a bit wet behind the ears… well, erm, not yet but that’s where you come in,” Marie cackles. “Come give this little lady a bath! Just 3 tickets for three balls!”

Marie looks around the crowd and points directly at you. “Hey, how about you! You wanna dunk a cheerleader?”

OOC: If you play, your character pays the required tickets (presumably you bought some already) and gets three separate 1D20+0 die rolls representing each throw. A roll of 18, 19, or 20 hits the target to the side of the tank and causes the bench to drop out from under Tabby and she splashes into the pool below.

I will try to respond to everyone within 24 hours. If I somehow miss you because it gets chaotic, please feel free to PM me or post again in the thread to let me know. We don’t need to worry about staying in order or for someone else to post again or finish their scene before someone else posts.

Dice instructions & game flow:

Here is how to make the rolls and the flow of the posts. For your first post, write an intro where you pay your tickets and include one die roll in the initial post. Please feel free to use the description above to describe some of the things your character did before finding the dunking booth. You are welcome to be as detailed or brief as you like.

When rolling, you want to roll 1d20. Do not add anything in the last box. (Roll 1 20-sided die one time and add 0 to the result). Then go ahead and post. I'll respond with your results and provide interactions according to if you hit the target or not. If you aren't comfortable with dice and use the d6 instead, we'll say a 6 is a hit and 1 is a really bad throw. (1 is alwyas a really bad throw no matter what die you use).

Then you'll post for your second roll, again using the same instructions for the roll. Once I post again, then you can take your third shot.

You are welcome to do any further posts you like or just wrap things up and move on to another activity and exit the scene. I'm happy to play out other parts of the event using other characters and NPCs if you want. Hopefully, we'll get to do at least 3 or 4 posts between our characters before wrapping the scene.
Jessica Griffin (played anonymously)

Jessica was driving through town, not really planning on stopping other than for fuel and a quick bite of fast-food before heading back out on the highway. Sitting at a stoplight that seemed to only turn red to stop her, she looked around and saw a poster stapled to the nearby telephone pole.

Jess usually took note of those things as they more often than not advertised a local band or venue or something like that. She had gotten a few gigs in towns by calling the phone numbers.

This one however was different. It was advertising the local county fair. Now Jess knew that these county fairs were usually about animals and agriculture and baking and such, but they were usually friendly places to do a little busking. Being she had gotten paid cash for that one-off live session at that country western bar last night, she used it as an excuse to decide to take a break and have a little fun. She may even make back the cost of admission and expenses by playing a few songs.

Finding a place to park her old Nissan, she walked toward the gate with her old beat up acoustic guitar case. Paying the entry fee and getting some of the tickets for the arcade and other concessions and charity events, she went to clear the security check.

“You’re an entertainer?” The lady guard asked as she checked her guitar case.
“Yes. Is it ok to pick a place inside and play some songs? I’m not on the official entertainment list.”
A glance over to another security guy who had taken notice of her, he nodded and she turned back and said, “Sure. Just mind the pathways and crowded areas. The park green would be a good place.”
“Ok, thanks!” Jess said as she was cleared to go in.

The first thing she did was hit the hamburger stand that was not far from the gate. She quickly ate the burger and looked around and listened to sounds. Hearing some girls talking as they walked by about someone getting initiated with a dunking, Jess got up and after dropping her rubbish in the proper bin, followed the bikini-clad girls a few paces behind.

Judging be they’d chatter, Jess guessed they were from the local high school, and she grinned at some of their banter. She thought to herself, ‘hmm... bikinis... it is supposed to get warm... it was already warm.... Jess was happy she opted to wear her cutoffs with her sandals, and the Mr Natural cartoon t-shirt was large and loose-fitting, so she would be comfortable as the day went on.

She paused and set her guitar case down when the girls gathered over by a dunk tank. It looked like they were just getting set up, and she listened to one of the girls getup and announce their first ‘victim’. Now Jess wasn’t really into dunking girls, hoping maybe a hot guy will be there later, but she decided to step up to be the first to throw the balls. She had played some baseball as a child, and some cricket when she was in school in England, but she wasn’t all that good of a ball thrower. She would give it a try...

“Here you go...” Jess said as she handed a ticket to one of the girls. She set down her guitar case as she was handed three softballs. She cue’d up at the line and looked at the dry girl sitting on the seat. She looked a little bit like an unwilling target so Jess said to her, “Hey don’t worry... I’m a terrible throw...”

Of course after saying that, the first pitch hit the button dead-center and the girl fell in and was soaked. She climbed back up sputtering, and Jess missed with her next two tries.

Tabby bit her lip as Marie drew a crowd around the tank. Marie was enjoying every moment of this. She lived to torture the first-year girls and seemed to have it out for her in particular for some reason... actually, Tabby knew why. Marie didn't approve of her friends or the band she was in. Her big sis, Starla was also on the squad and dating the keyboard player and lead singer of their band Trevor. Trevor was not 'up to par' or socially acceptable in Marie's eyes. Since Tabby was in the band as the lead guitarist and associated with Trevor and their drummer Matt who was equally dorky in the team captain's eyes, Tabby knew Marie was using her to send a message to Starla.

Marie pointed at someone in the audience, a blonde woman with a guitar case. She was young but definitely older than Tabby. Probably college-age by the looks of her. It seemed she was going to take Marie up on the offer and set her guitar case down. Tabby would have loved to talk shop with her and find out what kind of guitar she had and if she was in a band or not. However, this was not the appropriate time especially given the fact Tabby was in the dunk tank.

"We take cash donations, too," Tabby called to the blonde.

"We sure do, along with tickets to dunk newbies," Marie shot back without turning to look at her underling and forcing a smile at the woman as she handed over her tickets.

"I certainly won't complain," the redhead in the tank responded.

A moment later, she threw her first pitch. A dead bulls-eye. Tabby splashed into the tank before she knew what happened. She spit some water out of her mouth. She'd fallen completely into the tank and gone underwater. She popped back up quickly and the crowd cheered.

"Chop, chop Blackwell," Marie ordered. "The customer has two more throws."

Tabby quickly moved to the side of the tank and climbed the ladder as one of the other seniors reset the bench. Tabby took her seat again.

Marie turned back to the girl. "Okay, shot #2," she said clearing her to throw again. It was a wild throw and didn't even come close. Tabby wondered if she was being merciful.

"One more time," Marie said with a nod. The third throw was a lot closer but too high.

"Ohhhhh," Marie groaned, acting disappointed. "So close! But hey, you got her on the first try! Thanks for playing and supporting the Teal Cove Roaring Raptor Cheerleaders Booster Club!"

There was some applause from the crowd. "You can go again if you want... just three more tickets," Marie encouraged. "Or you're welcome to sit here and serenade the crowd if you like." Marie glanced at the guitarcase she'd set down before throwing the balls.
Jessica Griffin (played anonymously)

“You know I’m really sorry ... that throw is the highlight of my baseballing and cricketing ball tosses.” Jessica said to Tabatha as she stepped away back to her guitar.

Another girl in a cute bikini and wearing a top hat who seemed to be directing the activity and getting up the enthusiasm offered Jessica to have a sit nearby to play if she wanted. There was a small tree in a raised bed that had a cement edge that would work perfect to sit on and play. It even offered a little shade. “Aw, thank you...” Jessica said. “... maybe I’ll set up here close to your dunk tank and play and watch for a bit. I hope I don’t detract from your activities.” she added as she took the half-dozen steps to the tree.

Sitting down and getting her guitar out, she tuned it a little before she glanced over to the dunk tank. “This song is a Lady GaGa song called You and I...

As Jess was playing the song, she hoped the music would draw some more people to try the dunk tank... not that she wanted Tabby to get soaked again... mind you... but to raise money for the school.

"Uh, no problem," Tabby called back to the woman. "Uh, nice shot by the way!" Marie invited her to get out her guitar and start playing. Tabby scrambled back up the bench and waited for the next customer to come along. She really wanted to talk to her and find out who she was, but unfortunately, Tabby was stuck in the tank for the next two hours until someone came to relieve her.

Each new member was paired with a few older girls who worked in shifts. There was at least one senior member who was in charge. There was no accident or coincidence in the fact that Marie had made sure that she was the new girl working during her shift and that Starla had been scheduled at a different time than she had.

"Step right up," Marie said again into the battery-powered mic. It squealed a bit with feedback causing her and several others to jump. Amature Tabby thought to herself. It was obvious that Marie was not experienced with using a microphone and didn't know to keep it away from the speaker. "Come help the Roaring Raptors Cheer Squad raise some money and help a newbie cool off! Only 3 tickets for 3 throws!"

OOC: No problem. I realized further clarification was needed after someone else posted and then deleted their post because they didn't understand what to do. Hopefully, the instructions are clearer to others going forward.
Joey Lenocotta (played by Rogue-Scribe)

The fair... why not? Of course Joey didn’t pay to get in... well not in conventional means. The young ‘security’ guy was willing to look the other way at the back service gate when Joey held a joint up. “I’m with Funtime Rides” he said as the kid who looked roughly around his age in the hi-vis vest saw the smoke. He didn’t say a word or ask for ID. He just quickly took the joint and pocketed it as he turned his head away. Joey walked in with a grin, for he had more cash to play around with. It wasn’t that Joey was into this whole county-fair thing, but it was worth having a stroll through. A lot of chicks liked coming to these things, and so he would put his line in the water and see who he might meet.

Seeing that all the arcade games required tickets and the pinball and video game pavilion required tokens, Joey bought a bunch of both at a concession booth. He went in and toyed around with the ‘High Speed’ pinball game and racked up a high score before giving a couple newly-adolescent boys that enjoyed watching him the three games he had scored on it. “Have fun guys..” he said with a nod before leaving the pavilion.

Avoiding the cops, he slipped between tents and came out on arcade row. He didn’t need to draw any attention to himself from the police and the whole idea of ‘being put in jail’ for fun was not appealing. He spent too much time in the real deal as a joovie. Also a couple of those officers he saw knew him by his first name. In case he was spotted and was being followed, he blended in as he blew a couple tickets on the BB Tommygun shoot before taking the little stuffed rat he won. He was doing his rounds and getting bored, seeing most of the girls were maybe in junior high. Upon getting close enough to hear some singing and guitar playing in the distance, Joey nodded at the tune. “Not bad...” he said to himself as he approached the source. He was referring equally to her looks and her music.

“Ohh... jackpot...” he breathed to himself upon seeing the bikini-clad babe standing nearby with a top hat and what looked like a crappy toy karaoke mic in her hand. The speaker wasn’t doing her voice any favors either as she was touting their dunktank, and it looked like the babe on the plank was already wet and maybe even a little cold? Yes, he found the chicks!

Joey paused by the musician as he surveyed the scene. Cheerleaders from Teal Cove High! Dang! He of course didn’t want to dis the hot singer though, and as much as he he didn’t like giving away money for nothing, the girl’s looks and efforts deserved something. He reached into the pocket of his khaki camo cargo shorts and pulled out a bunch of coins to drop in her guitar case. He maybe got what looked like a slight smile but she didn’t miss a beat as the clinkling coins rolled about. It looked like he threw in a few pennies, a nickel, a couple dimes, and a quarter along with a couple of the game tokens.

Turning his attention to tophat and the other cheerleaders around the dunktank briefly before looking again at the wet redhead, he was guessing he might hang around here for a while! When top hat saw him checking out the wet cheerleader, she asked “Do you want to dunk a cheerleader?” Joey smiled as he gave tophat another look. “Yeah... gimme three...” he said as he fished out the tickets from one of his pockets. Handing them to the brunette, another blonde cheerleader in a black bikini was ready to hand him some balls.

“Just a sec...” Joey said as he took off the open red flannel shirt he had over his faded blue Chevrolet-branded muscle shirt. He stepped over by the musician and set it down on the stone seat and put his rat on top of it. ”Just going to leave this here for a bit. Watch the rat. He’s a thief.” he said, unsure if she heard him or not. He was right back to take the balls.

Flexing his muscles, he looked to the redhead and said, “You wanna get wet again?” He didn’t wait for a response as he threw his first ball...

It slipped a little too soon from his grip and flew high and to the right, hitting the backboard. Looks like you can dry off a little longer...” he said with a smile....

Marie continued to encourage people to approach the booth with the battery-powered loud-speaker. She spied a guy she didn't recognize that was about her age. He dropped some change in the case of the guitar girl that had just dunked Tabby a few minutes ago. The blonde girl was already strumming away on her guitar and singing. It was helping to draw more people this way as a few passersby stopped to listen. Marie turned back to the guy that had just tipped the guitarist, batted her eyes at him, and grinned cheerfully. “Do you want to dunk a cheerleader?”

Joey smiled as he gave tophat another look. “Yeah... gimme three...” he said as he fished out the tickets from one of his pockets. Handing them to the brunette, another blonde cheerleader in a black bikini was ready to hand him some balls.

"You look experienced," Marie commented. Although she was pouring it on thick, she assumed by the looks of this guy that he was probably a townie from the wrong side of the tracks which likely meant he went to the rival high school. Of course, he obviously wasn't one of the people that mattered, so even if he went to Teal Cove, she wouldn't have taken notice of him in the halls or lunchroom. If he did, he was probably friends with Starla's loser boyfriend what's his name.

Just a sec...” Joey said as he took off the open red flannel shirt he had over his faded blue Chevrolet-branded muscle shirt. He stepped over by the musician and set it down on the stone seat and put his rat on top of it. ”Just going to leave this here for a bit. Watch the rat. He’s a thief.” he said, unsure if she heard him or not. He was right back to take the balls.

"Sure, take your time," Marie replied, her voice still dripping with sweetness. Hurry up and throw it already! If you drown Tabby, all the better.

Flexing his muscles, he looked to the redhead and said, “You wanna get wet again?” He didn’t wait for a response as he threw his first ball...

The ball flew towards the target before she could say anything, but it was a miss.

It slipped a little too soon from his grip and flew high and to the right, hitting the backboard. Looks like you can dry off a little longer...” he said with a smile....

Tabby didn't answer.

"Oh, so close," Marie said with faked sympathy. "Rotten luck, but you get two more shots! Give it another go! I'm pretty sure Tabby forgot to take a bath last night and probably needs another good dunking, right Tabbycat?"

Tabby just scowled. She tried her best to let the comment and hated nickname roll off of her back. The last thing she wanted to do was give Marie a reaction. She braced for the second shot and hoped this one missed, too.

OOC: Absolutely perfect! This is exactly what I'm looking for.
Joey Lenocotta (played by Rogue-Scribe)

“Well... Lets see if I get better with this?” Joey said to Tophat as he tossed the 2nd ball up in the air to catch it with a solid grip. He gave the brunette a look over and raised an eyebrow. He was guessing she was the ‘mean girl’ type judging by her remark.

He smirked and played along with her as he looked to the target and said, “Hey Redfreak, wanna get wet?”

He was closer, but he may have purposely mulligan’d it. He shrugged and looked to Tophat and said, “Maybe I aim better at pretty brunettes?”

Jessica got into playing, and did take note of the change being dropped in her case. She wasn’t quite ready to try throwing again but did take a look at the stuffed rat that sat on the guy’s shirt. It kept staring at her!

She did listen in on some of the talk going on around the dunk tank before playing another song. She thought she would continue along and do her best Fleetwood Mac cover.

The girl with the guitar concluded her Lady Gaga song and jumped into a Fleetwood Mac tune.

Marie giggled and clapped at the remark. "She does," Marie answered for Tabby. "Put her in the tank!"

Tabby was really getting irritated by this jerk now. There were so many things she wanted to say to him but held her tongue. He threw the ball again and the shot was only slightly better than the first. He sure did talk a lot of crap for someone who couldn't throw worth a flip.

He was closer, but he may have purposely mulligan’d it. He shrugged and looked to Tophat and said, “Maybe I aim better at pretty brunettes?”

Marie forced a laugh. "You'll have to try back later then when we have a shift change," Marie informed him. "The team captain is a bit above first year duties. Okay, third time is a charm! Let's see you dunk her!"
Joey Lenocotta (played by Rogue-Scribe)

“Yeah I guessed you were in charge and would go last.” Joey said as he gave the third ball a grip. He gave it a couple light tosses that went up about six inches or so from his hand and took a look at the other cheerleaders hanging around. “You have quite a nice squad that will likely go in before you huh.”

He looked up to the redhead and gave her a smile. He could see she was looking a bit irritated at the ribbing. “You ready to get this over with ... Tabby is it?” Joey gave a wind up and was about to let the last ball fly....

Before he could though, he heard an authoritative voice from behind him say, “Joey Lenocotta, could you come with us?”

Joey paused and looked back and sighed. “Officer Mills, I don’t have time for your play-jail... can’t you see I’m busy making time with the Teal Cove girls?”

”Oh, this isn’t a joke son. Though you likely should be for something, I’m not arresting you for anything, fun or otherwise, right now. We just have some questions about an incident near the service gate.” Officer Mills said as he reached out to escort Joey away.

“Uhm, can I at least take my last chance to get Strawberry wet?” Joey said as he let the ball fly...

He was about as accurate as his other throws. “Guess no wet cat from me... hope to be back for you Tophat.” He said before he was to be led away by Officer Mills.

Marie really forced a smile. She was having a hard time controlling the sarcasm in her voice at this point. "I don't think you quite understand," she explained unable to suppress an eye roll. "I'm a senior and the team captain. I don't go in the tank. That's the new team members' jobs. RIGHT Tabbycat?"

"Yes ma'am," Tabby grumbled, also giving an involuntary eye roll. Fortunately for her, Marie was facing the customer and had her back to her.

He looked up to the redhead and gave her a smile. He could see she was looking a bit irritated at the ribbing. “You ready to get this over with ... Tabby is it?” Joey gave a wind up and was about to let the last ball fly....

"Sure," Tabby managed, not confirming her name. She was getting a bad vibe off of this guy. It was about that time she spotted a cop in the crowd not far from the dunk tank. He talked to another bystander who pointed at the guy with the ball. The cop nodded and moved toward him. Tabby's eyes were now fixed on the cop, ignoring that she could go into the tank at any moment.

"Thanks for playing," Marie replied. She was so glad to get the guy away from her booth. She stared after him as the cop lead him away. Yup, definitely a townie from the southside. They let just any riff-raff in here!

Tabby was relieved the guy's final throw missed after all of his smack talk.

Marie glanced to the girl playing the guitar. "Looks l like you got a new toy... I would throw that in the trash if I were you," Marie advised when she finished her song. "No telling where it's been..."

Marie then picked up the mic again. "Alrighty folks," Marie said putting her PT Barnum face back on. "Step right up and dunk a cheerleader! Only 3 throws for 3 tickets!"

OOC: Awesome ending!
Stephanie (played anonymously)

It was a nice sunny day for the fair and Stephanie was glad she didn’t have to work the espresso stand that day. She didn’t mind her part-time job but she liked to play too. She was chatting with one of her co-workers who was working the business’s mobile coffee stand at the fair and she wasn’t exactly sure where the guy she came with had gotten off to. He likely got tired of waiting for the two girls to finish talking.

Steph walked up toward some announcement being made and saw there was a dunktank. Smiling, she reached into the pocket of her cutoffs, she had exactly three tickets. “I want to play!” She said as she handed the tickets to the girl with the microphone. Getting a ball, she looked around for her guy first before looking intently at the target button. Steph was never any good at sports, being more the bookish, artistic sort in school. Still she would give this a red hot try.

“It would probably be nice to get dunked on a warm day like this...” Stephanie said as she threw the ball.

(OOC - thanks, just adding a final post to clean up the loose ends)

Joey smirked at the brunette as she said she wasn’t going to get wet. Oh well. He gave the girl playing music a quick glance before he walked off with the officer. Fortunately for him, his bag of weed, pipe, and lighter were in his shirt pocket on the bench. It was a good thing too as Officer Mills stopped when they reached the shade of the police tent and questioned him about the security guy they busted smoking out. Joey was detained for about an hour before he was let go. That security guy was careless and fingered him when he got busted.

Joey returned to the dunk tank and took a seat to watch the Teal Cove bikini babes and listen to the music the musician was playing.
Tabitha Blackwell (played by AgentMilkshake) Topic Starter

It wasn't long before another player came along. It was another girl with blonde hair who looked to be in her late teens or early 20s. She was obviously a few years older than Tabby.

Smiling, she reached into the pocket of her cutoffs, she had exactly three tickets. “I want to play!” She said as she handed the tickets to the girl with the microphone.

The brunette wearing the tux-like bikini took them and smiled and pointed to the tank. "Just hit the target on the side of the tank and dunk the redhead," she said enthusiastically. "She really needs a good cooling off!"

Getting a ball, she looked around for a moment as if searching for someone. Apparently, she didn't see whoever it was and returned her attention to the target.

“It would probably be nice to get dunked on a warm day like this...” Stephanie said as she threw the ball.

"Uh, yeah," Tabby said with a nod. She didn't recognize the girl. Either she wasn't from around here or was old enough she probably graduated before Tabby arrived in town last year. Marie didn't appear to know who she was either. At least she was clearly here just to have a little fun, unlike the last guy who apparently talked his way out of whatever the cop wanted to discuss with him and was making his way back over toward the girl playing the guitar.

Unfortunately, the throw was too high and went over the target.

"Oh, so close," the girl with the mic said.

Tabby mentally breathed a sigh of relief. She was just started to feel dry again, although she'd probably end up in the water several dozen times before her shift. At least she had playing with her band on the stage to look forward to later that night. She glanced down at her hands, worried about the calluses on her fingertips.

"Go ahead, give it another go," Marie encouraged the blonde girl. "You can do it!" She lifted the mic again. "Come on folks, cheer her on!"

"Dunk red! Dunk red!" the crowd chanted, obviously referencing Tabby's red hair.

Steph had only come to visit her dad for the summer so she wasn’t known around the area, but she was friendly and had a way of making friends easily.

Giggling as the crowd started to chant. “”I’m not very good at this...” Stephanie said to the girl sitting on the seat.

“Ok... here it goes....” she added as her arm moved in a strange way for throwing.

Ben Watson (played anonymously)

Coming to the fair with Stephanie was a nice break in their routine. Ben had no qualms about being seen with her, age difference notwithstanding. He was hoping her father wouldn’t show up, things could get a little awkward if they ran into him. But Steph seemed reasonably sure he wasn’t going to show up here.

Plus, she asked, and he was finding it hard to say no to her.

When she met up with one of the other barista babes, or whatever they were called, he stood around for as long as he could stand it. But before long, it grew even too much for his patient nature. “I’m gonna take a walk, see what else is around,” he said, touching the small of her back to get her attention. “Back in a bit”.

He took a short walk. Despite it being his home town, very few of his friends were around. This wasn’t the kind of place any of them usually came to, except for those who already settled down to have a kid or two. He didn’t see any of his brother’s friends, but that was no surprise. Even if they were the type to visit a count fair, which they weren't, there was increased police presence around to raise funds for something or other. Best to stay away or there would be real lockup for a couple of them, probably.

He circled back in time to see Stephanie miss her shot at dunking the girl in the tank. He grinned and joined her. “Let me help,” he said, positioning himself behind her so they can hold the new ball she’s been handed together. He cupped her hand and held her wrist in place with his thumb. “Like this, see?” he suggested, moving his arm and hers back to show the arching movement. “Lets see how well we do”.

Steph giggled, happy to see Ben show up after whatever he was doing. She didn’t mind him getting close, but his ‘help’ didn’t do much for her last throw.

“Babe, that was worse than my other two.” She said as the ball missed the backstop all together. It would have hit the poor redhead had there not be a safety fence.

Reaching into Ben’s pocket, she pulled out a string of tickets. “I think we have another three tries...” Steph said as she tore off three and dangled them in front of the MC of the event.

“I’ll try one myself, then you can have the other two throws, ok baby?” Steph said as she took a ball in her hand. She gave it a hard throw...

Jess finished up her song and scraped the money out of her guitar case before putting her guitar in it. She had been watching the antics going on.. the cops walking off the guy... the wild ball throwing. So far she was the star pitcher managing to dunk the cheerleader on her first throw.

She sipped at a water bottle she had with her and observed the dynamic unfolding before her. A fairly handsome man came up and insisted on ‘helping’ the blonde girl who had come up and threw a couple missed tosses. Of course, with his ‘help’, the ball flew wildly. “Typical...” Jess said in a low breath. A guy always trying to show a girl how it’s done. She closed her case and stood up, giving the guy next to her a nod. She said to the girl in the tophat, “thanks for having me. I’m going to go wander about and play in some other places. I’ll be back later though.”

She smiled at the blonde guy as the blonde girl for more tickets from him to try dunking the cheerleader a few more times, and she walked off into the crowd.
When Doreen finally showed up at the dunk tank, some guy was "helping" a woman throw the last of her three balls. They missed horribly, so badly they didn't even hit the backstop. Doreen suppressed a smirk and hurried over to retrieve the wayward ball.

Doreen was one of the head cheerleaders at Teal Cove High, second-in-command behind Marie. She was dressed in a tuxedo-like bikini similar to Marie's, except that hers was white where Marie's was black, and she lacked the top hat. She might don a hat later when it was her shift running the dunk tank. In the meanwhile, she'd stopped by to see how things were going.

After she'd gathered up all three balls she brought them back to where Marie was standing, ready to hand them to the next customer. "Hi Marie, how's it going?" she asked.
