  It was hot outside but it was better than being inside. Lucy could hear her mother yelling above the blaring of the radio that her most recent boyfriend had turned up too loud. They were both yelling and both drunk. Lucy knew it wouldn’t last. They’d go back to the bedroom at night and shut the door. The bed would creak. He’d be gone tomorrow. Lucy still bore the bruises from the last one, the one who had looked her long blonde hair and slender colt legs and licked his lips.
  
  Independent from a young age, Lucy taught herself how to cook from library books, making her mother dinner more often then the other way around. Then came the lemonade stand and the school bake sale. Lucy found she had a talent for it, and loved seeing that her creations could make other people happy Lucy found escape in the library. Escape from the heat, from her mother, from the trailer that had become a prison.
  
  After an author visited the library when she was 10, Lucy wanted nothing more than to be a writer when she grew up, and often stayed up past her bedtime to show her mother another tale happily scribbled in crayon. Lucy later found them crumbled in the waste bin under the sink. That was her life plan. To write like the authors of the books she devoured and cook on the side.
  
  In high school, life got harder. She was known as trailer trash, the girl with clothes from the second hand store that didn’t match and frayed shoe laces. It was around that time that Lucy fell in love as well. His name was Tyler Jacobs and he was the only one who saw her as something more. He promised to take her away from all this, that they could start over. Through the years, Tyler revealed his callous nature. But Lucy stayed with him, believing she could change him. That deep down, he was in love with her as she was with him and he didn’t quite know how to show it.
  
  After graduation, Tyler did take her away and they moved to a small apartment. Lucy talked about getting married, starting a family. He always dodged the question. Failing at job after job, Tyler eventually turned to crime to pay the bills. He sank in deep, and became even worse. Lucy continued with her love of cooking, and opened up her own bakery. It was her happy place, where she could make other people happy too. Where the atmosphere was warm, bright, and calm. Her coworkers said nothing about the bruises covered with makeup, nor her long hours as Lucy dreaded going home save for her golden retriever Gypsy.
  
  Then came two events that shaped her life. First was Frank. Coming in to order a birthday cake for a friend, the two locked eyes over the counter and Lucy was gone. It didn’t matter that he was older. She was drawn to his kindness and quiet nature, determined to make him smile and get past the gruff exterior. Slowly a friendship developed and lately Lucy has been wanting more. She feels guilty about it, and thinks he doesn’t feel the same way. The last thing she wants to do is ruin the only bright spot in her life.
  
  The second was when she went to Tyler to the gang’s usual hangout, an out of the way bar. Lucy heard an argument outside and peeked through the door into the alley to make Tyler was alright. She witnessed a man on his knees get shot in the head, Tyler among the ones watching with a hard expression. Lucy bolted to the bathroom to vomit, and never told anyone. Now, the gang has been getting suspicious that Lucy knows something, saw something she shouldn’t have that night. And they want to silence her for good before she works up the nerve to go the police. While Lucy hasn’t breathed a word to either party, the quiet is going to get broken soon.
