• Appearance

  Seeing Annie from afar or behind, one might suspect that the swanlike beauty of her long and slender body must belong to some ethereal being, a fairy ballerina, a real live enchantress. But then she comes closer, or turns her head, or peeks out from behind her book, and it's apparent that she is simply one such unlucky girl who's never attracted attention with her looks.
  
  Her face is long, its lines and angles tending towards square. Her features always appear tense, with her brows poised as if in silent reproach and her lips firmly pressed together. One expects to hear a shrill nasally voice from that harsh little mouth, but instead her speech is disarmingly gentle, soft. She has worn three little lines into the center of her lower lip from periodically chewing it, a nervous habit.
  
  Annie's hair is long, thick, and mostly straight. She almost always wears it down; any shy person with long hair knows the calming security that such a shelter offers from the eyes of others! She tends to dress in an unassuming way, modest bottoms and loose-fitting tops with few accessories, and sticks to pale or dark colors. Under her clothes she wears a silver locket that was a long-ago present from a childhood friend. (There's nothing inside.)

• History

  Annie was the accidental last child of parents who thought they were about to be empty-nesters. Her upbringing in New England was quiet and isolated. Life unfolded predictably: She went to school, spent holidays with family, had occasional sleepovers, and generally never distinguished herself. Her parents paid for her to get a Bachelors degree in English for which she wrote several stories and a short novel. She's incredibly embarrassed of her writing and has never shown anyone except the professors with whom she needed to trust her creative endeavors in order to get her degree.
  
  Annie failed to formulate a plan for what she would do once she finished her degree, and so after a month spent languishing in her now-alient bedroom and wearing out her parents' welcome, she was more or less carted off to live with her much-older sister. And her husband. In Texas.
  
  Annie would have loved to laugh over the comedy of fate with her friends, but she'd lost contact with her few childhood friends when everyone scattered to go to college, and she herself never really clicked with her own college peers. And she would have loved to turn her thoughts and experiences into fiction, but the task of obtaining an English degree left her feeling totally averse to writing anything at all. Everything was overwhelming and she could find no relief in anything. Annie was stuck.

  Misc. information: In college Annie had several missed connections with people who could have opened her up. She usually missed out on formative experiences because of hesitation, nerves/panic, or some kind of faux pas.
