Intro

• The Boy and the Oak

  “Will you tell us a story before bed?” the older one said as he pulled the wool covers over his bed.
  
  “Yes yes, please father!” the younger one said as she perched upon her father’s lap.
  
  The father sighed. His joints ached in the cold and he wished for nothing more than the warm embrace of his own bed. Yet, as many times before, the brightly lit, expectant faces of his children won him over.
  
  “Very well” he resigned with a smile. He sat at the foot of his son’s bed and cradled his daughter’s head. He glanced at the small relief of the oak tree etched onto the wooden frame above the doorway.
  
  “Have I told you about the boy and the oak tree?” the father asked.
  
  The two children shook their heads giddily.
  
  “A little boy and his father walking about the forest to gather firewood. They stumbled upon an oak sapling near their home. The father told the boy that if he watched over and cared for this sapling it would always be there for you. All oaks were children of Hamos, the god of family and home. ”
  
  “So the boy would play by the sapling, never picking a leaf or splitting a branch. He would make sure that the other boys and girls never did so either. The boy got older and so did the sapling, and after a few years the sapling grew to be taller than the boy and began to build a small trunk. One day the boy came weeping to the young tree. He cried that the some of the older boys poked fun at him and threw stones. A billowing wind raced through the woods, all the plants and trees swayed in the wind but the young oak tree stood tall and strong not relenting one inch to the strong gale. The boy learned that he had to be confident and as long as he was no one would bother him.”
  
  “Years later the boy came back to the tree. He told the tree of all his wildest fancies. He told Hamos’ child about how he wanted to slay a dragon, save a princess and bathe in riches like a lord. The tree now had large thick branches, but one branch reached too high. It’s bark was too green and too soft. Suddenly a hawk grabbed the young branch with its talons and tore it off to use for its nest. The boy learned that having lofty goals however pleasing was never practical.
  
  “The boy became a teenager. And like many other boys his age he was lovelorn. He came to the tree complaining that though he was in love, he had nothing to give her, nothing to impress her with. The tree dropped twigs adorned with the most beautiful colored leaves. The boy took the twigs and leaves and fashioned a crown of amber, crimson, gold and ebony. The teenager learned that intent and dedication were far more valued than wealth.”
  
  “The teenager became a young man with a betrothed. He came to the now maturing oak tree. He told Hamo’s child that he had just quarrelled with his bride to be. They had yelled at each other till their voices failed them. He asked the oak what he could do to reconcile. At first no sign came. The entire forest went silent. Then, like a whisper came the rustling of the trees, followed by faint melodies of the songbirds. The young man learned that more often than not, listening is more important than speaking.”
  
  “They young man was now older and married. His wife was expecting. He came back to his old friend, the oak tree. He lamented about how anxious he felt about being a father. He doubted if he could be a good one. The sun began to shine bright upon the tree and the married man could see all the animals that used the oak as their home. The squirrels burrowed with their young in its hollows. The birds built perches on branched and fed their chicks with the insects that made their home in the tree’s roots. The man learned that to provide and love was all he would have to do to be a good father.”
  
  “The years went by, both tree and man became older. The man watched his children grow older and the child of Hamos watched as his acorn seeds began to sprout. Decades later the man, now and old man, came to visit his oak friend. He told the tree that he felt alone. His children now raised their own families and his wife had passed away years ago. The tree did nothing but stand tall in the forest. The man then noticed all the other oak trees that now filled the forest. Some were five stories tall while others were just knee high saplings. However they all shone just as brightly as the child of Hamos that was this old man’s longest friend.”
  
  The father paused. His son snored lightly and his daughter waded through dreams in his arms. He tucked her in bed and kissed both their foreheads.
  
  “The man understood that as long as he had a family, he would never be alone.”
