  Nelly-Mae Walker, the only child of Nashville's own Doctor B. Walker, was loud, rowdy and - to the dismay of her parents - a tomboy through and through. She favored pants to skirts, shooting ranges to coming out parties, and never left the house without her favorite raptor skin boots on. In an act of rebellion, Ole Nell slashed her long auburn curls off at the shoulder in a proclamation of "practicality," but the rest of the town knew the truth - That woman had the Devil in her boots.

• Upbringing

  Benjamin and Lilly-Anne Walker were wed on a sunny day in May, and just over a year later they welcomed little Nelly-Mae into their home in June.
  
  Doctor Walker was a prominent physician in Nashville, and his practice provided his family a comfortable living in town. Nelly-Mae would enjoy an easy childhood, complete with the care of the town's best governess. At least, she would until said governess had had enough.
  
  "That child's a tornado, and I ain't stayin' around to let her blow me away!"
  
  The Walker household went through a number of care givers for Nelly-Mae through the course of her early years. She was a stubborn child who wouldn't sit still, wouldn't play with dolls, and hated taking baths. It was plain to see that she had no interest in becoming the southern belle her parents had imagined, but despite this Lilly-Anne was determined to see her child through finishing school and a formal introduction into society.
  
  When she wasn't at home memorizing which hand to hold her tea cup in, Nelly-Mae was finding trouble. She started off gathering lizards and crickets to leave in other people's pockets and hats, but she eventually moved on to picking fights with boys in the back streets who had the audacity to challenge her. If they could spit three feet, she could spit farther. If they could punch hard, she would punch harder. And, of course, if they could shoot a can off the fence, she could do it better.
  
  Nelly-Mae was determined to outshine any of the dumb ol' boys in town out at the range, and it wasn't long before she began spending all of her personal time practicing her aim. She shot plates, cans, bottles, gourds, apples, hats, boots, squirrels and sparrows. If you could name it, Ole Nell could shoot it. In time, she started entering competitions each spring at the county fair, and before long she'd make a name for herself as the best shot in Nashville.
