• Character Background

  Thorn, as an individual, is a byproduct of his lineage. The three-tailed family-clan known as Starjammers have a rich history of being obsessed with the black curtain of space. They had a history of being some of the earliest to become astronomers, and when aeronautics became a thing among the race, some of the first pilots. This tradition has continued through the family line, to the point that now, the name is stereotyped as a group of vagabond space gypsies.
  
  And Thorn is no different. A privateer with loyalty to no real government nor corporation outside of the hierarchy of his family and his loyalty to his ship. He is exemplary of his race's instinct of inquisitive behavior, often finding trouble or landing in it just because something esoteric caught his attention for a time. But such fancies rarely last longer than a passing fad, as he takes to the black once more to drift about for the next thing that makes that playful gleam return to his eye.
  
  In fitting with his race's knowledge of genetic manipulation, Thorn has spliced into himself some Kinetic capabilities, mostly to better integrate with the rest of galactic society. He has spliced into himself an ability to empathically control machines via sort of 'psychic datalink' and is his primary form of defense, as he constructs little 'toys' that he can easily interface with and bring to his defense. He also has a minor telekinetic ability, which he uses to haul cargo primarily, or to haul things in the way of his face when people get rough.
  
  His ship is called the FTLS "Mistress Moon"

• Species History

  When Humans began to first cause an impact in the black of Space, they did so with experiments. And humans, being humans, often had some of the craziest ideas for experimentation to be done. And this, is where the origin of the "Jacha Vul" species began. It's all quite the remarkable tale, really. Mankind expected to reach out and touch the stars, they never expected the stars to reach back.
  
  As an experiment in the early days of suspended sleep and in meddling in developing ecosystems via "Terrestrial Bestial Terraforming", several animal species where selected, given minor genetic modifications to survive the suspended animation process, and placed into a system of cryogenic hibernation. They were then launched into space with intended destination of a habitable exo-planet deemed suitable to the experiment.
  
  The planet had plentiful vegetation, which had a strange tendency to grow in odd colorations, but low in native life. It possessed ten percent more water than Earth, was high in forests and jungles, mildly heavier gravity, and a similar atmosphere. Yet it was only 30% the size of earth, and lacking in natural resource that would mark it suitable for setting up a industrialized harvesting operation.
  
  When the space ship made orbit, the plan went into motion. In timed intervals, a section of the ship would be jettisoned towards the exo-planet to make planet-fall in a predicted region of the planet that would be suitable to the breeding group housed within the pod. Once it landed, the systems would begin to wake the animals from suspension, open the interior compartments to the outside world, and then the systems would shut down. Probes where launched from earth at bi-annual intervals to observe the experiments long-term progress.
  
  But even the probes couldn't track what was truly happening.
  
  Most of the animal species did not survive, either due to inadequate food sources or inadequate biology. But several species did, and settled into suitable ecological niches...either by co-existence or ousting the native life. But in some of the species, the genetic modifications needed for the experiment to commence where causing unheard of changes in their mental physiology.
  
  To put it into layman's terms, they were evolving sentient thoughts, right under the watchful eyes of the bi-annual drones. But the the time the drones stopped coming, for the organizations responsible for the experiment had disappeared in the passage of time, a few of the species had evolved into tool-using nomadic societies.
  
  And this was where we meet the race of the Jacha Vul, the descendants of the earth Foxes. The Jacha Vul evolved radically colored fur coloration and patterning to match the vegetation of the planet. A genetic quirk caused them to grow multiple tails, with the amount seemingly based on genetics of their original eight breeding pairs, varying from two to nine, dividing the race into easily identified clans.
  
  The Jacha Vul where hardly the most aggressive of the races to emerge during the period of unobserved development. However, they were the most clever, and the most inquisitive. While the other species fought one another, the Vul remained staunchly aloof and neutral, sticking to their underground dwellings and searching deeper into the strange metal ruins that dotted the landscape. Many of the fledgling species died out in conflicts during this period of conflict, as tribalism gave way to feudal societies, but it was what that came next that truly set the Jacha Vul on their path to being the dominant species.
  
  Ancient Carvings from the Jacha Vul and their companion species relate a tale of where, by their society's recollection, of their various early religious icons becoming angry, and encasing the skies in a layer of ice. Many fledgling cultures died out, but for the Jacha Vul, this was just an opportunity to make use of all they had learned of the metal ruins. For whatever caused the event, they were prepared...though how they knew what would be required, is a mystery even to their modern people.
  
  They castled their people into the metal structures, and used their knowledge of it's workings to close them. With the ruinous wombs, they race was able to survive the age of dark and ice. They learned more from the advanced machinery within their new homes, and their culture advanced rapidly while outside, the others regressed further and further before the cataclysm, back to their early stone ages.
  
  When the skies cleared, the Jacha Vul where the most advanced creatures on the planet, having learned the depth of knowledge from the devices within the metal ruins. They built machines, began to cultivate their territories within the planet, and reap the benefits thereof. They discovered how to refit the systems of the ship compartments into devices that worked with their paws, entering an industrial age.
  
  A Space Age quickly followed suit, as they found the remains of the space ship that had brought their race to their tiny world. And this, brought them the secret of genetic manipulation to push their race into a trans-human...err...Trans-Vulpes Star Age. They traveled deep, back to Earth, eager to greet their benefactor species in Mankind.
  
  On the grand stage of the universe, The Jacha Vul are known for their use of genetic modifications to unlock various 'psychic' abilities. They have tried to use it to alter their bodies, with disastrous traumatic results, and so settled on the mental path for their technology progressions. These process is done by use of an injection of gene splicing serum into the neck, and is keyed to the Jacha Vul's genetic code, causing terribly cruel mutations in non-Vulkind. They are also very well known for their spiritual, almost religious, reverence of Machines. Vul are raised believing that all complex Machines have a quasi-sentient spirit resting within them. And that this spirit must be shown respect. Finally, they are known for their unusual choice in ship design, creating long serpentine vessels that fly on tri-winged, thruster-clad segments that seem to "slither" through space.
