History

Early Life

'Baby boy Doe', the T.V. proclaimed, was born in a bathroom and left wrapped in toilet paper in a surrendered baby drop off by a teenage girl, long presumed to have been his mother and it was assumed that the girl had given birth in a restroom prior to abandoning her infant. It was said that 'Baby Doe' was fostered by one of the nurses from the hospital he'd been rushed to until his adoptive parents were cleared to take him home. John didn't remember his birth, as it had happened, only what people later said happened. He didn't remember living with Barbra the nurse or meeting her at all, though he always got a Birthday card from her every year. John was a local celebrity in the small town he lived in. Being a timid awkward child he had never appreciated the attention his story had gotten him. When his family moved he was thrilled to live somewhere no one had heard of him.

Things were going okay in the new town. John was still adjusting to his new school and having started part way through the year one of his classmates had been assigned to show him around. The boys had taken to each other quickly upon discovering they liked a lot of the same T.V. shows and movies. The boy was having a birthday the following week and John was invited. However when John told his parents they wanted to meet the boy and know all about the party, who would be there all the details. When John was unable to confirm if there would be parents there or not, as his new friend was never clear on if his mother would be there or not. John and his parents argued.

John said things he would regret later and in his anger he saw what looked like strings of beads where his parents' faces were. He found he could pluck the beads and they would pop like bubbles. John took out his frustration out on the strange apparitions. When the boy's anger cooled his parents were looking at him strangely. Unknowingly John had erased his adoptive parents' minds of key memories. They no longer remembered adopting the boy and John's adoptive father shouted at him to get out of the house.

John did not go to the party that week or return to school the next day. The boy counted himself an orphan and homeless once what he had gone finally came to him. John does not use his power very often as doing so scares him. Because of this he is not well practiced in erasing minds or picking what memories to erase verses those to leave alone.

He was thirteen and on his own. By sixteen he had adapted to living on the streets somewhat. He used his powers to keep hidden when he felt threatened. It was not much of an existence, constantly looking over his shoulder expecting someone to have figured things out and be hunting him down. He considered himself to be a danger to others and so he tried to keep away from other people, but he wasn't the type to keep to himself by nature. He liked to be around people and make friends - at least he had tried to make friends before he'd made his parents forget him. Many more people had been made to forget him and other things in the years since.


Later Life

After some time on the streets John found himself in foster care, living with the Duncans who might want to adopt him - if he doesn't mess things up again.

A new family meant a new room, new clothes and of course going back to school. John was out of school just long enough that he couldn't pick up in the same grade as those his age - he had to start where he left off a few grades below where he might have been if …. if things had been different.


Adult Life

Now at eighteen John is technically an adult. This has not helped him much in life. He doubts he'll have to go back to school anytime soon, but since he effectively dropped out of school before starting high school he's at a disadvantage compared to other adults. He has tried to get work a few times but the lack of a diploma or equivalent and his fear of hurting other people by accident has prevented him from going far in the work world. He mostly gets by doing odd jobs here and there. Jobs that he can do by himself and have low requirements. Often he works picking up trash at parks, painting addresses on street curbs or if someone needs an extra hand in moving a heavy piece of furniture - little things. He tries to keep focused on his job and not get involved with people if he can help it.

John's biggest fear is that there could be some kind of group of people who know about his powers and want to get him. Secondly he fears that if he has powers others could have them too and there could be some superpowered group of people out there either heros or villians who could find out about him and want to come after him either to recruit him or kill him, and maybe they'd kill him if he declined their offer.

Important Note:

After John left his adoptive parents did eventually figure out that he was their son in a way. Their neighbors, the teachers at John's school all questioned them about the boy's whereabouts. They didn't remember him but they could see photos on the walls a bedroom in their house that clearly belonged to a young teen boy and legal papers confirming the boy's adoption thirteen years prior. However by then the boy was no where in sight and having no memory of him and being in a new town no one had any good idea as to where the boy may have gone.

John knows that he can't go back to his former adoptive parents as things can not be how they used to be. If he want back they'd have to get to know him all over again. Things they used to do from years of habitual routine would be gone. It would in John's mind be like getting adopted by a new family that looked and sounded like the one he used to have and he doesn't think he could live with them after what he did to them. He doesn't think he could avoid telling them what he'd done and he fears how they'd respond if they knew he was the reason they couldn't remember him.

It is possible that someone may have heard of John as a run away kid or missing kid years ago.

Powers and Abilities

Powers

Mental Amnesia: John's has the ability to cause loss of particular memories or to induce a more general amnesia in another person or even in a group of people. His powers are known to work on the average human. They do not work on robots and depending on the Cyborg may not work on them either. It is assumed that his powers would not work on aliens or non-humans due to differences in the brain when compared to a human. A powerful person with superpowers might also be immune, but as John doesn't socialize unless forced to, he has not tested who his powers work on or don't work on - largely as he tries not to use them. Not using his powers makes him anxious and stressed and his may have trouble controlling his powers if he does not use them and learn how they work.
