An interview questionnaire.
1. What country is your Character from?
She is originally from from a distant colder country in the mountains known as Sarain. She nows lives in in the city due to her career and past.
2. How would you physically describe your Character?
Valeria is five feet, seven inches. She isn’t tall, but definitely not short. Most people would call her full figured and plump. She is not shy about cooking or eating her devious creations. She weighs probably around 200 pounds, unashamedly. While this is true, she did a lot of manual labor as a child and teen which earned her stout muscle in her legs and arms. So while doughnuts and pie are often on the menu, she equally loves her meat and veggies to support her hidden strength.
Her hair is long and curled. When straight, it reaches almost to her butt, but curled, it rests a few inches below her shoulders. Her lockes of murky brown lighten to a light tone at the ends, bleached by the sun. All the women were always commenting on her hair while growing up, that she considers it her best feature. This causes her to feel very self conscious when it is up and unstyled. Typically she wears it half up, half down. This causes her midlength bangs to frame her rounded cheeks while keeping her longer tresses out of the way. She has a solid forehead with unremarkable brown eyes. On cloudy days they have tinge of swampy green which makes them slightly more interesting should people see past her hair. There lovely orbs rest beneath full brown eyebrows. Thickness of hair was definitely a trait she inherited. While most women plucked and preen to have thinner delicate brows, Valeria gave up forfeiting the battle against her genes. So they remain full and expressive. Her nose, a little bigger than she would wish is symmetrical. It makes a perfect pig nose if she pushes the cartilage up with her finger, an action often done around kids for their amusement. There are slight creases at her eyes reaving an older history of perhaps not sleeping well enough. However, it is her smile that people notice next. Her lips, while simple are always formed into a natural smile. She is always ready to laugh and finds herself always smiling at strangers. Just another one of her charms that she does not give herself credit for. She has firm jaw, almost that of man. Her teeth are straight with a slight overbite that no one really notices. Her skin very pale, typical of the people that come from the Scanra region. Perhaps this was due to some of her mother’s heritage. Her skin remained youthful and clear most of the time. She always wore skin protectant from the sun, but other than that, Valeria shunned the practice of wearing face and lip paints. She felt like it simply took time away from her sleep. Besides, this was how the mother Goddess made her. Her ears were pierced, but usually hidden from view and often free of ornaments due to them always seeming to get tangled in her hair. Instead, she settled on little glass roses that sat on the lobe of her ear with no chance of getting tangled in her mane.
Valeria Loves to look “nice” in terms of clothing. She is usually in a simple dress most of the time often opting out of the restraining devices that women wore to accent their curves. She simply wore a plain wide sleeved shirt that laced at the top (in a mens style undershirt that is wore below the tunic). She then wore a long skirt that sat at her waist. This gave her larger body more shape and gave the attention to her well endowed chest. This aspect, one that she was secretly proud to have, was often covered immensely in order to ward of lewd personages. She always wore high collar dresses and shirts. She wanted to ensure that people did not consider her a buxom Lady of the Evening. She had large strong hands that showed a history of work. Her nails were always trimmed short despite the common fashion. As an avid lover of flowers and gardening, she saw it advantageous to keep them short to avoid getting dirt stuck under her nails. She always wears black leather gloves. She had some extra flesh about her as a whole, but is seemed evenly portion throughout her body. This outcome of her active habits distinguished her from other heftier women who often had all their weight in their middle, butt, or legs. She would of course prefer to be a little thinner, but she is not willing to forgo her beloved cooking. Hidden beneath her skirts are thick thighs that have some muscle and strong hearty calves. Those legs can run and lift despite the look of softness. Her bum would be considered average. Definitely not perfect, but not flat. It comforts a fall off of a horse and that is what matters. Her feet are the other aspect that reflects her stout and firm appearance. Most women have dainty feet. Valeria has strong larger feet that are often comparable to men’s feet. She often shops for boots and buys men’s since they are more comfortable. She likes ankle boots, but has a collection of browns and blacks that range from ankle to full calf. She only a pair of Yamani sandals, but hardly ever wears them. She prefers her barefoot on the soft grass when not traveling
3. Does your Character have recurring mannerisms?
Valeria is very perceptive in the way of how people are feeling. She likes to ensure that everyone is comfortable. Her goodnatured personality is very inviting which means she often attracts many people. However, she would much prefer to spend time with one or two people at a time, that way she feels that they have her full attention. Valeria is definitely a outgoing in nature when she feels comfortable. This often causes her to be chatty. However, when uncomfortable or unsure in a new place, she often becomes extremely quiet or introverted.
4. What is your Character’s main motivation?
Valeria’s main motivation is to live a happy life and make others. She knows she has a past she has to eventually come to terms with, but it is her keen desire to seek her true happiness away from hardship.
5. What is your Character’s greatest strength? Greatest weakness?
Valeria loves to see joy in others and tends to go out of her way to ensure that her friends are happy and taken care of, even if sometimes they would not do the same for her. This trait makes her ignore herself sometimes and often puts a strain on her own time, health and finances. She is great at listening and giving advice. Valeria true strength is that of a songstress. She sings elegantly in a light and soaring manner. This is a shock because most people would expect her to have a lower full throaty sound. However, she charms many with her singing and talent. She has a great affinity for drawing. Valeria does have some weaknesses however. While fully competent at defending herself with basic magic, a bow, and knife, she hates fighting. She always seeks a peaceful route; talking and negotiating. She gets anxious at the sight of blood and always rushes in to try to heal even if that person is the enemy. Her kindness is her weakness in dire situations.
6. What are your Character’s most and least favorite things?
Valeria loves flowers. Her favorite season is planting season and relishes in the scent of fresh dew on the grass on a cool morning. Growing up in the mountains of Sarain, she often did not see green earth. After moving to the port city with her work, she found herself fancying a mountain view and cool lakes to swim in. The open sea frightens her, but she loves the sound of the sea crashing on the rocks. She much prefers the gentle waters of a lake where she can sea what creatures lie in the water. She often paints flowers and landscapes as she dreams of her old home in Sarain. Cold does not bother her too much, but she absolutely detests the heat. The one time she journeyed south to Carthak was to be her last. She preferred not to melt. She loves to read far off stories in books, but often wonders if her talent is good enough to take her to such places like the Copper Isles and Yamani Isles. Valeria is NOT a fan of chattering women. She can’t stand when girls simply talk about fashion, boys and other ‘delicate’ habits that she does not follow. She would much rather chat with gentleman and laugh.
7. What about your Character’s psychology?
Valeria has a good experienced head on her shoulders. She is kind and sweet to everyone, and always tries to the think the best of people. She had been hurt and lied to in the past, so there is a huge value in Honesty with her. Once her trust in you is broken, it gone forever. Should one ever lie to her, she will turn cold and never take your word again. She will often turn passive aggressive in a verbal fight that leaves people stunned. She easily sees through deception which causes people be honest with her. Because of her quirkiness on trust and loyalty, her friends and comrades trust her wholly. They know that Valeria will tell them the truth and always be open with her intentions. She never breaks her word or tells a falsehood making her a indispensable ally.
8. What is your Character’s single greatest fear?
Valeria fears ending up alone in life. Already 28 and once divorced, she fears wasting her remaining years on pointless relationships. She is afraid of falling in love with the wrong person. This makes her nervous when men try to take friendships farther with her. She is still healing from her previous husband’s betrayal and seems to think that there is no one “free of sin”. Her other fear is the fear of the unknown. She hates the dark, but she cannot see what is in it. At night in the open, she is terrified of movement in the woods. Once she sees it is an animal, she is fine. But if she cannot find the source, she is paranoid out her own wits.
9. What are your Character’s highest ambitions? Their greatest love?
Valeria wants to leave a legacy of music behind. She writes in secret under a false male name (since women did not have credit as musicians). She also dreams to be remembered as a kind and loving woman by her friends.
10. What is your Character’s opinion of their country?
Valeria is not a fool. She thinks that her country needs to lighten up on the laws that restrain women to their husband or father’s wills. She thinks that women should be able to have a voice and inherit. However, she does think that Tortall is definitely very free in their beliefs and radical changes. The Lady knights of Tortall still shock her because she still considers this more of a male role. She does not condemn the women, but still finds it hard to handle.
11. Does your Character have any prejudices?
Valeria has a deep hatred for pirates and the Rogue. She was deeply hurt by one such scoundrel and this causes her to be repulsed by them, even if they change their ways. The phrase “honorable thief” is impossible for her to comprehend. Valeria also has a slight dislike for flirtatious nobles. Her talent as a singer and voluptuous figure often attracts men who think to take her in as a mistress under the guise of a privately hired musician/teacher. Such thinking repulses. Though she is no longer married, she aptly refuses to be “free” with her romances.
12. Where do your Character’s loyalties lie?
Valeria once served a noble house in the capital of Serain as a musician. She was discovered singing at the Black God’s Temple in honor of a fallen hero. She was often fired to sing at memorial services as well as union services at various temples. After being hired in by this noble as his private musician for dinner parties, she made a large sum of money as a older teen. However, once Valeria made it clear that her services were ONLY that of a musician, she was tossed back out on the street. She allies herself to her own needs and survival, until the opportunity for hire comes along.
13. Is your Character in love? Are they married or betrothed?
Once Valeria was in love. Her previous husband, Alabaster, she loved Dearly. They met when she was 17 and swept her off her feet. He showed her everything that she wanted to see in a man. He loved her for her faults, and sincerity. After being married, she began to see other traits that were not present when he showed her the facade of a man he was. Abuse of alcohol was one issue, then the constant lies about women where not simply ‘friends’. Finally the truth came out that he was not actually a knight like he claimed, but one who was dismissed from the service. He had turned immediately to piracy and robbed ships on the great inland sea. When he came to port to sell stolen goods, he found her. He renounced his life as a pirate and saw Valeria as his “salvation”. With her, he did not need anything. But after he claimed his prize, he slowly turned back to his old ways finding it easier to steal than be a merchant. Finally after a fit of rage when she declared that she would not give up her career due to his jealousy of being hired by rich handsome nobles, she ran off. After returning home, she found him drunk as usual at his favorite tavern in the port town a week later. It was there she found his “squire”: a beautiful younger woman with the perfect figure who could not be mistaken as a high demand courtesan. She laughed at Valeria saying that she was shocked that she was his wife. He never mentioned he was married at all and never wore the ring she gave him. Hurt and betrayed, Valeria packed all her things out of their lovely town house and sought her fortune else way. Despite filing for legal divorce in Sarain, she found that it was not granted because the husband must do so. So, she travelled to Tortall in hopes of freeing herself from the man who betrayed her. She did receive it, but she became completely hesitant around men.
14. What about your Character’s family?
Valeria’s family was not poor, but not rich. Ewyn was a newer family name that was know throughout the mountains as honorable merchants. Her parents were older and she was the youngest of six. She was unplanned and her gave birth to her at the late age of forty-one. Her Father was passed on when she was eight years old and her eldest brother by twenty-two years took over the family business. Her eldest sister died in the great sickness that struck the mountains when she was but a babe. Her middle second eldest brother worked in the business while her middle brother became a knight. Her middle sister married some rich man of Galla that was business partner of her late father. Finally, the youngest son whom was the only one that actually liked her, was sent off to Carthak to be a mage. He used to write her regularly, but after she married, her husband cut her off and she lost track of him when he took a new name as an accomplished mage.
15. How would your Character’s parents describe them?
Valeria’s Father viewed her as an absent minded girl who was just a another mouth to feed. He felt he was too old for children and had no use for another girl that he would need to find a husband for. Her mother cherished her and often called her her “little flower” hence the origin of her name. While she loved her, the mother could not take care of her properly. Valeria’s mother never truly recovered after the late pregnancy and stress of her father dying. Her mother believed that she would go far in the world with her talent and kindness. This was why she was sent the port city to train in the temples as a priestess at first and then a musician.
16. Is your Character a gentleman or gentlewoman?
She is definitely a gentle woman. She regards her word as truth and never breaks it. She will never make a promise she cannot keep.
17. How religious is your Character? What God or Goddess do they follow?
Valeria is a deep follower of The Great Mother Goddess. She also has deep respect for the Black God and the other great Gods. She does not like the Graveyard Hag or the Trickster God due to her thoughts of them being ‘dishonest’ and too cunning to be trusted.
18. Is your Character a member of a guild, organization, or secret society?
Valeria has many connections throughout the temples as well as various nobles here and there. She also knows many other great performers.
19. What does your Character think of the Gift?
Valeria respects the gift. She herself possess a unique one, but it is not overly powerful. She can manifest small powers like lighting a candle, unlocking a door, and other small useful things. She can even heal minor wounds and prevent mortal ones from taking a life, but it drains her. However, her true gift lies in putting people at ease and soothing them with music. With proper training, her voice became an extension of her gift: she learned to put people to sleep, ease tension, enchant them to do her bidding, and even hurt them physically if she sang high enough. She was often compared to a Siren. However, she never pursued this magic too far because she would never use her voice for such things as harming people. She thought that if she had that kind of power, people would want her to work for them to pursue evil. Still she hesitates to show off her true power with her voice.
20. If you could, what advice would you give your Character?
I would tell my character to not lose hope. Not every man is the same. Don’t be afraid to train your gift. It might serve good, not evil.
