Ariame Starspinner

Introduction

• Who?

  Ariame Starspinner is, as far as she knows, the last of her race. Centuries ago the Gose attacked Q’Velle for the last time. Because of her skills in the field of prescience she was conscripted into the K’saorn where her abilities were used cruelly. Before that time, she was trained to fight in the infantry and became particularly skilled with a blade.
  
  Once her skills were discovered she would be connected via a neural net to groups of drone pilots, usually anywhere from ten to twenty at a time. Possibilities spread out, branching before the pilots, visible to each of them. Individually, they managed their particular timeline, using it to pilot their drones and get the jump on the Gose.
  
  Twenty was uncomfortable and pushed her limits but twenty-five flayed her mind to shreds. Still the pilots pulled their predictive moments through her until consciousness fled. When she or any of the other short term scryers fell they would be replaced immediately by another and taken to a recovery station to rest until they could be forced to their feet for another round.
  
  As the war wore on and others like her were having their abilities burned from them with overuse, Ariame managed to hang on to her abilities and her sanity. The time eventually came when retreat became a rout and it was every K’naran for themselves. Ariame connected with a contact who owned a freighter. Every credit she and her family had ever saved went to pay for passage to Kaaryj. They met at a prearranged rendezvous point; her family arrived as she did, thirty-seven in all from oldsters to babes in arms.
  
  Getting from the surface and into orbit where they would meet the freight ship was a harrowing experience; one that none of them expected to survive after a close call as they rose above the city skyline and was narrowly missed by a massive plasma bolt. Soon the small craft was lost in the chaos of fleeing ships of all sizes and before long, they were aboard the freighter.
  
  The ship was close to being ready for the scrap heaps but it was the best that could be managed. The stasis pods that she had had requisitioned on the sly when it looked like the K’narans would lose the war were ready for them. More than a dozen would stand empty representing those who had already fallen. The youngest and oldest were settled first and Ariame was the last, taking to her pod only when she was sure that all of the other pods were functioning properly. The last thing she saw was the pod closing.
  
  Several weeks into their journey red lights flashed and claxons blared. Time, use, and neglect combined with the strikes of several small meteors during a shower compromised the hull in a critical place. In a few short minutes the air was gone completely, but by then, the escape pods had jettisoned and the captain and small crew were away, leaving their living cargo behind.
  
  Three hundred and twenty-eight years and trillions of light-years later light flashes through her closed lids and a chill washes over bare skin. Slowly, she roused and found herself in a ship that had been derelict for centuries and in front of a man she did not recognize. Saved from the slow death her family suffered as their pods failed, Ariame was granted another chance, a new lease on life.
  
  For a time she traveled with the man who found her, but she has since moved on alone. Now she searches for a place in a world that her kind has never known.
