Briony and Amaranth

• Details

  • Setting: Modern day Earth; magic isn't known to humans without magical abilities. 'High' fantasy, in an anything-goes sense as long as it can reasonably be hidden.
  • Location: Various places around the United States; the girls' mothers travel a lot in an attempt to protect them and keep them secret

• the past

  Briony Duane was born to Morgan Duane, often termed the 'silver-haired psychic' by those in her neighborhood. Morgan willingly chose to have two daughters from two different men and remain unmarried. By the time Morgan had Briony, her elder daughter Begonia was eight years old.
  
  Morgan knew something was different about Briony by the time her daughter was one. And so she began to travel. During these travels, she met Eliza Handrix: a young woman with a daughter only two or so months younger than Briony. Amaranth had something different about her, too. Eliza came from a mostly-magicless family, and she herself could only heal very minor scrapes and bruises. But Amaranth... well.
  
  The two women found commonality and camaraderie: the woman who worked as a psychic both inside and outside the magical community and the trained nurse.
  
  Eliza's family had abandoned her when she had Amaranth out of wedlock, and so Eliza was happy to have a new family. They traveled together, keeping their dear daughters secret.
  
  But Amaranth had too much heart and Briony was too independent. By the time the girls were eight, Briony was regularly sneaking them out to help someone or another. Usually with big things, from important people, who could keep their secret. It was how they met Kinsey, a faerie who tends to help others on her own. The girls and the faerie became fast friends.
  
  It is a strange thing, to look upon two humans with such extraordinarily strong powers. The Duanes had a blessing - long, long ago - that girls in their family would be born with silver hair and be psychic; but Morgan had been the strongest of the women clairvoyants for generations, and there was only human blood. And Eliza Handrix was just the latest human in a long line of humans who very rarely had any magic at all. She had to keep it secret from her own parents!
  
  Briony and Amaranth are a mystery and a fluke. An impossibility, if you will.

• the present

  an out-of-character note: I'm willing to roleplay the girls from their listed ages of ten to the age of 21. thus, 'the present' encompasses this
  
  As Briony and Amaranth grow into their teen years and become, at least in some ways, 'adults', the two of them continue to sneak out.
  
  They also grow in power.
  
  By the time Amaranth is eighteen years old, she could potentially heal an entire ward within a hospital. Maybe the whole hospital. Briony does her best to keep her from this knowledge.
  
  In fact, Briony doesn't let Amaranth know how powerful she is. The healer would go around healing everyone, mindless of her own health and abilities. Or of free will and why most gods allow mortal beings to choose their own fates and to get sick and to die and all of that.
  
  Briony does, however, lead Amaranth to where she can help. A healer is always useful. A psychic is useful as well. As long as she can help people, Amaranth is content.
  
  This counts.

• the future

  Briony is a Seer. She knows her future and the future of her best friend and practically-sister. Many details remain vague, but she does know a few things:
  

  • Briony and Amaranth will both end up having children with non-humans, and as a consequence, their children's abilities will be even more powerful than their own.
  • Amaranth will end up married to the father of her children. Briony doesn't know if she will or not.
  • Due to their personalities, both of them will ultimately become well-known. Briony fully intends to ensure they'll be protected before this happens, so that neither of them have to hold back from helping people once they move out away from their family/families.
