• Backstory

  Cataliana Nester was born in the city of Korvosa, home to one of the biggest and most influential wizard's colleges in Varissia. Her and her impoverished family lived under it's shadow, always looming well out of reach. Cataliana grew to be envious of those fortunate enough to have the means to attend. Instead of working to better her chances by putting her bright mind to work studying, she lamented her poor fortune at being born with little means to pay for a higher education. Though very intelligent Cataliana was not always motivated and it was easier to make excuses then to try and improve things as they were.
  
  Her obsession did not go wholly unnoticed though. In a strangely vivid dream Cataliana was promised power with very little work at all if she agreed to take on an unknown entity as a patron. The disembodied voice inside her own head assured her she would have to do nothing more than use her gifted powers as she desired in order to keep them. Cataliana agreed. She was a bright girl but still very young, and eager for a chance to be admitted to the Acadame.
  
  When she awoke her newly granted familiar, a hedgehog she later named Hazel, was by her side. Though she could remember very little from her dreams she retained knowledge of her gift and knew the simple demands. She immediately went to work applying for tutelage at the Acadamae. She was rebuffed with every attempt, either the way she acquired her powers were suspect or she just wasn't up to their standards.
  
  The troubles didn't stop there though. Each night since her pact her dreams became increasingly more troublesome. Strange images of colors she'd never seen before, shapes that boggled the mind, and spaces so large it made her head ache when she later tried to imagine them. It got so bad that for a while Cataliana avoided sleep altogether. When she did she found she could not access her powers, so she suffered on. Even when she slept the night through she'd awake feeling just as tired as before. It began to drain on her, and she started growing pale and gaunt. Her family, concerned for her health, thought she needed to get away from the place and sent her to live with relatives in Magnimar.
  
  Feeling something was sinister about her dreams and how they were connected to her powers Cataliana started keeping the source of her powers to herself. Hazel was kept in a cloth pouch attached to her hip for most of the day, and no one questioned her strange pet for too long when they did see her. It was not uncommon to see wizards with familiars after all.
  
  Cataliana is currently trying to discover the identity of her patron and their goals. She must keep using her powers to keep her end of the bargain so she tries to find ways to use these powers to help others in order to ease the guilt of accepting a possibly evil patron. She is also hoping if she keeps growing stronger she might one day be able to unmask and confront her strange benefactor.
