• The Fall

  A fiery ball of light fell from the sky and traveled far over the forests. It plummeted through the atmosphere, falling faster, and faster, until it reached ground level, leaving a trail of burnt trees behind. In a shower of debris, the object crashed with an earth shaking explosion. The burst spread wide as trees and bushes splintered everywhere. At the place of impact, smoke wavered in thick black curtains and the ground rose in sharp angles, decorated with jagged pieces of rock and roots tangled in the dirt. There were no sounds of animals on this night, no owls hooted or frogs and crickets chirped. The only sound were the flames hissing and wood cracking as it burned. The light slowly faded, leaving only a crater behind and a forest floor littered with blood and feathers.
  
  Curled into a limp ball in the center of the crater, she lay shaking in the wake of her fall; tattered remnants of her robes singed and burned, large patches simply gone. Her long white hair covered her face and shoulders like a silk sheet and all around her feathers and bones lay scattered and stained red with blood.
  
  The earth trembled...
  
  The skies trembled...

  Trembled...
  
  Two long wounds framed two broken bones, jutting out of her back in jagged stubs. Blood oozed over her and the ground around her, staining her clothes and back a deep crimson. With tentative fingers, she reached up to the sky as her mouth moved furiously, her lips forming words unknown to the men of this realm. Sensations were taking over her body and mind, the likes of which she had never felt before. Hot, salty tears streamed down her cheeks, stinging her eyes as smoke burned her throat.
  
  Was she crying?
  
  She had never cried before.
  
  Her back arched and she curled forward, her mouth opening in a silent cry as searing pain tore through the wounds near her shoulder blades. With one hand, she reached up, tucked her hair behind her ears and stretched to feel for something she would not find. Her hand touched the nub of one protruding bone, and sticky warm blood covered her pale white fingers. Her large green eyes took in the crimson stains on her hand, horror etched over her face. Slowly, she scanned the crater, the feathers, the blood, the bones, and gut wrenching sob tore from her body. She watched, her deep green eyes mirroring the reflection of the scene before her as the feathers closest to the flames twisted and melted, slowly being devoured until they were nothing. Her breathing quickened as she felt part of herself burn away with each one.
  
  Turning her face into the crook of her arm, she surrendered to the knot in her throat and allowed herself to weep freely for the first time. Bitter, terrified sobs shook her frame with relentless force, pain shooting through her back with each gasp for air. Her stomach twisted and her heart constricted as she tried to draw in a breath between each sob, finding it almost impossible as her throat tightened painfully each time. She fought for control as pain threatened overwhelm her.
  
  Finally, she pushed up with her hands, her fingers digging deeply into the tightly packed ground, her nails breaking. Turning her luminescent green eyes skyward, her gaze caught sight of the remnants of a wing hanging by a branch, smoke framing the white outline, blood dripping from the stub. With a shudder, she looked passed the carnage to the deep blue sky, her eyes locking with the moon and stars that peered through the smoke of her fall, gazing down into the hell in which she found herself. Drawing in a deep breath, her fingers clenching tighter still into the dirt, she uttered her first sound. Putting all the anguish, all the pain and fear she was feeling for the first time in her eternal years...
