    Werewolves were never fond of their lesser cousins. No one knows much about how they came to be, but everyone knows a lot about why they never should have.

    Paul Grant and Stacy Kowalski discovered one another on the outskirts of Detroit in 1973--a mistake of divine timing that would become the source of both their greatest joy and their greatest pain. The prejudices against their kind were no better for Paul in America than for Stacy in Europe, but soon enough a maddening hope for camaraderie with the wolves of Michigan kept them anchored in place till the end of their days.

    They spent years fighting for favor with the wolves. They fought for their honor tooth and nail when they had the strength and energy, and they begged for it when they didn't. At most, they mustered a chagrined tolerance, but never true acceptance. At worst, they gambled desperately with their own lives.

    They found some reprieve from the ongoing slew of vehement rejections by the wolves when their daughter was born. Cyprus, the runt of a litter of one, allowed the Grants a short season of amnesty by the wolves of Michigan. Despite all their vanity, they could not stomach the thought of letting a baby die for lack of resources. But by the time Cyprus turned three, the Grants were forced into animosity once more, and left to fend for themselves.

    All efforts towards progress came to a bitter halt on a cold night in 1990. Paul and Stacy bundled their daughter up against the biting chill that was soon to burst through the dirty alleyway with her father's old jacket, bade her to to keep sight of her mother's backpack, kissed her on the forehead, and left for the wolves with the hope of returning soon. Little did they know that this next attempt to plead for acceptance would be their very last.

    Cyprus waited two weeks before word drifted to her that her parents weren't coming back.

    Bereavement consumed her. Detroit did the same soon after.
