  Laughing wholeheartedly in amazement, the man looked in awe at the little girl before him. With two tiny bone-like shards sticking out of her unkempt black hair, and eyes black as night, the young street urchin gazed back with a look of fear on her face. Unsurprisingly, he thought, she was not used to getting caught in the act.
  
  "Let it go, mate." He chuckled to his companion, and waved the other thief's hand away from it's grip on the cloth at Ardira's ragged top. Drake dropped to his hunkers, and gave the girl a calculated grin, exposing a chipped tooth. "You're not bad, are you, kid? What you say to earning your supper a little more honestly?" He pulled out a map of a nearby building and offered it to her.
  
  The tiefling glanced between the men, expecting some sort of cruel joke. That being said, nobody had taken the time to speak to her before. She pursed her lips, the look of worry not dwindling. Drake watched her gaze drift to his companion, who was still frowning disapprovingly. The rogue tutted and thrust his thumb towards him.
  
  "This guy isn't gonna touch you - are you, Lars?" He shot a look up over his shoulder, to which the man could only sigh and say "no" in an irked tone. Drake saw that the girl would need more convincing than that, however.
  
  "Look - you do this for us, and we'll see you're rewarded well." He casually flicked a single gold coin to her before standing back up. "And there's more where that came from, if you pull this off." He looked back to Lars with a knowing grin as Ardira's gaze was now enthralled by the shiny coin in the palm of her hand. A bit more settled, her little brain started working.
  
  "An-nother coin and I'll help you." She cheeped bravely, clutching the gold piece for support. This seemed too much for Lars, who's retort to the girl ("What did you say, you little brat?") was drowned out almost completely by the laughter that erupted from Drake.
  
  "You'll go far, kid." The man grinned, before motioning for the two to follow. He offered no further coin, Ardira noted, but the temptation was too much to back out of now. She trotted off to follow the two thieves, ensuring to stick closer to the friendlier of the two men.
  
  Little did she know how much that their encounter would shape her future.
