The ring of the telescope started to make his face ache. He had already propped his elbows on the side of his raft, to save his strength. Who do you have to pay for a cargo ferry to be on time? The weather had been clear and the voyage was allegedly brief. A swelling wave rocked him, seaspray hitting his soft pelt. His tail shivered, coiling round his leg. As if a trigger, there she came, casting a shadow behind her as the seaside lantern hailed their docking. The timing wasn't perfect, but the night was young. Several yards off of the dock, an anchor was silently slipped into the water. A pale body divested its clothing, and soon followed.

On the dock, a single file line had been formed, marching in the middle of a dual guard. The latest slaves, shackled together by their wrists. Their feet had been left free to make haste, as they neared the threshold to the grounds. It was a short tunnel, darkened by the candlelight, causing a few slaves to misstep. There was a small commotion, which was soon cleared. The guard never noticed there were now two mice, one black, one white. |
